Talk about deadline pressure. ABC’s decision to not only cancel Ugly Betty but to reduce the show’s episode order from 22 to 20 has left producers racing to tie up four years’ worth of story lines in just a handful of episodes. The first order of business: straightening out Betty’s unresolved dental issues.
“The braces are coming off,” reveals series creator Silvio Horta of the March episode, which will find America Ferrera’s Betty being whisked off on an It’s a Wonderful Life-esque journey. “There’s a big fantasy element to it. We’ll ask the question, ‘What if Betty had perfect teeth?’”
Change will also come to Betty’s professional life via a new job opportunity that “may take her away from Mode,” teases Horta. “We’re going to see how that impacts the people she works with as well as her family.”
Elsewhere, questions surrounding Justin’s sexuality will be addressed (spoiler alert: he’s gay!), Wilhelmina’s first love (played by Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell) resurfaces, and, as I previously reported, a major character will get hitched in the series finale. In possibly related news, rumor has it Christopher Gorham has been approached to reprise his role as Betty’s ex-love Henry — something Horta would neither confirm nor deny.
For his part, co-star Michael Urie (Marc) is of the opinion that his onscreen frenemy should end up single. “I don’t think the right guy has come along yet for Betty,” he offers. “Besides, I don’t think [fans] would be truly satisfied if she ended up with anybody.”

i am realy not surprised that ABC mistreaated it- if it’s not Grey’s they don’t care…. they’ve had several shows in the past few years that they never gave a true chance to…like pushing daisies…
I hope another network picks it up, too. ABC did not do the show justice by moving it around. It was one of the best comedy shows in many years. I am sure they will replace it with some BS reality show. Thank God for cable TV. ABC has lost viewer in me and mi familia. Come on NBC…. Pickit up. Please….

they addressed Justin’s sexuality during a concert at his school episode. Anyone else remember this episode – it was very touching.
Actually they didn’t address because when Hilda was hinting to Justin that he could tell her “ANYTHING” he said I’m paraphrasing here: “Nope, I have nothing to tell you.” I wouldn’t call that dealing with it.

I would love Betty and Daniel together. The other guys have helped her grow into who she is but there has been one constant through all of it. That has been Daniel. I don’t think there relationship is borther and sister. It’s more like best friends. That is how my own relationship started we were best friends for three years. Sometimes you need those experiences to grow as a person before you’re ready to be with the person who has been there all along for you. We have been together for five years now. So trust me if they had the time they could make Daniel and Betty work. It just takes the right moment and the right story line!

Daniel is more of a brother then a lover. I agree with Gio or Matt. It is just wrong to take this cinderella show off the air. There is no warm hearted TV anymore, the world needs more smiles and less CSI.
I agree with Melissa- no daniel…they have no chemistry… and having the two of them end up together would be only becasue the show is ending and not because it’s the right choice. Daniel and wilhemina have more chemistry and i actually see it heading that way

The Marc actor is right that a chunk of fans will be disappointed if Betty ends up with any of her former flames. I’d like it if the show ended with the hint of a relationship with someone new – and maybe Betty is the one who instigates it. But I have to say that Gio was my favorite. He’s the one who stretched her the most as a human being. He was antagonistically supportive, you know? Plus, those two had the best chemistry by far.

I couldn’t agree more, while I stopped watching when the show moved to Friday nights, and Amanda moved in with Betty, etc. I would hate to hear that they brought Henry back, he was just sooooooooo boring for Betty – who would actually want a life partner that was their mirror, just not good.
I loved Gio a whole lot and thought he and Betty had a great chemistry, I can’t speak about Betty’s other love interest, so my opinion would be to get Gio back.
I really think she should be with Daniel. To me they have been through so much together more than brother and sister. I would love to see them together. As for Henry he had a chance and now it is to late. As for the show everytime the show was on I could not wait to watch it. If I had a bad day or week Ugly Betty would make me laugh and everything was gone for that hour.
I agree w Urie. Betty should not be married at the end of the series. It only reinforces the stereotype that a woman isn’t complete without a man.
i agree, the show is about an young independent woman thriving in the big city, she doesn’t have to end up with just anybody! the show should end with her finally getting a real writing job, and leave her love life open ended – so much possibilities for Betty’s future!
I agree with Jon and DB. There’s absolutely no reason for Betty to end up with anyone, least of all Daniel or Matt. I think the biggest change for Betty would be her career, or even if her blog takes off and she has the opportunity to start a magazine of that. But seriously, leave her single!

DB, the show isn’t about an young independent woman thriving in the big city. Most of the time the show is about an unattractive codependent office assistant struggling to survive in the big city.

Betty should get a terrific job for a real magazine or even one of the gig New York newspapers, take off her braces and give her a new hairstyle and glasses …. and leave the love life question up in the air … the last scene could just be Betty leaving Mode offices with her new look and a big smile on her face.
Agreed, she should be like Buffy in Buffy’s finale – the whole speech about how she can’t pick anyone right now because she’s still cookie dough and has to keep baking. I liked that.
It’s becoming a cliche especially on TV, that women have to be independent & successful in their careers and should be alone and seemingly happy and content. Why can’t they have it all if they want? Have all the above plus have a guy who is equally successful in their own career as well. If Betty ends up single it would be dissappointing IMO.

That’s too bad. Memo to producers of high quality shows: Never do business with ABC. This network will pretend at first to be supportive of your show, but as soon as you sign on the dotted line, they are thinking of ways to get the most they can out of you, then dick you around so bad you won’t know what happened. Memo to tv viewers: Never watch excellent, high quality shows on ABC. Just when you are hooked, poof! it’s gone.
I don’t know about that, they stuck with Lost even after its ratings started to decline, & signed a long-term contract so that the show would be able to wrap up in a satisfying way. Ugly Betty had a good run, at least it didn’t get cancelled after the 2nd season like some other shows. I don’t think any of the networks are 100% great about remaining faithful to shows.
Lost is the exception rather than the rule.
@Leslie: Yeah, but I’m pretty sure the reason they did that with Lost was because they recognized the future earning potential. Syndication rights, comic books, dvd sales. They know the type of fans that watch Lost are also the type of hardcore super fans that are willing to shell out the big bucks for anything related to the show.
I’m still furious over what they did to Men-in-Trees.

I am hugely disappointed about ugly betty’s cancellation. This along with the way they did men in trees has made me not want to watch the network. the only thing i have left is sunday nights, because i love dh and b&s.
I truly hope that another network sees the potential of this show and gives it another chance.Well, I hoped the same thing for MIT but to no avail, maybe we will get luck this time.

you could say the same thing about Fox. Really, all channels are corporations and if a show doesn’t seem like it’s viable anymore, it’s going to get cut. But people can save shows (eg. Chuck) if they put forth the effort (before official word comes once official word comes it’s over eg. Dead Like Me.)
I can not believe that they are cancelling this clever, wonderfully funny show. They did move it all over and did not show it the respect it deserves! Can’t we fight this??

I’ve got three words for you:
“One year later…” (or some variation). It’s what they did at the end of “27 Dresses” (and probably in a lot of movies). It allows the show to fast-forward through the relationaship to a point where it makes sense for the characters to get married.
I’m not saying that’s what UB will do, but it’s certainly a possibility, no matter who she ends up with (if anyone).
I thoguht about that! They should take her teeth off and have her start dressing “normally” towards the end of the season. Daniel starts to realize “Oh wow Betty is beautiful!” He then realizes how much she is there for him and start to get feelings for her. Then in the finale wallah, they are a couple. It ends with a flash forward showing that they have stayed together and married later in life.
But if Daniel is too dim to have seen how beautiful Betty is, before losing the braces, then he does not deserve her.
I think the producers are doing a great job this year. The interaction of Betty and Daniel in this week’s episode was great. If they want to take us there, I think I can almost imagine B & D kisssing–almost. And I love how the producers are treating Betty better. She still has to overcome all sorts of goofy things, but it’s not humiliating.
They’ve let her grow. She’s finally learned how to dress. She finally is doing well in her new job. Marc is finally equal with her. Matt thankfully is gone. Hilda can make different decisions-if she wants. Justin is getting his classes/future. Maybe Dad can find a woman with looots of makeup? Everything we’ve wanted for her and the other characters is happening.
Ever since the show started I always thought that Betty and Daniel were going to be endgame. I always saw the two of them together running Mode and being happy.
Henry coming back would be an interesting twist but I just don’t see her picking him to be the guy she ends up with.
I agree about Daniel, and maybe the reason they’re bringing him back is to make Daniel jealous and realize his true feelings for her. Maybe Daniel’s gonna bust up a wedding, Graduate-style. That would be awesome, only with a happy ending instead of the bus scene.

Why are any two people who have known each other for more than a week without jumping each other written off as “brother and sister”? THEY ARE NOT. They are NOT EVEN CLOSE. If you don’t like the couple, it’s your opinion, but there is absolutely zero sibling relationship between them. Some of us like relationships where the people come together slowly after being friends first, and if you somehow find that “weird,” that’s your problem.
