Pilot Intel: O'Loughlin booked for 'Hawaii Five-0'

They booked him!

CBS has successfully persuaded Alex O’Loughlin to headline its in-the-works remake of Hawaii Five-0, sources confirm.

O’Loughlin will play Det. Steve McGarrett, the role originated by Jack Lord.

This marks CBS’ third partnership with the in-demand actor. Their previous efforts, Moonlight and Three Rivers, both ended after one season.

Earlier this week, Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim was tapped to join the Hawaii cast in the role of state police officer Chin Ho Kelly.

The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.

Thoughts? Will the third time be the charm for CBS and O’Loughlin?

    3rd time’s a charm?

    • DJ

I sure hope so. Part of me wants him to run far and fast away from CBS and towards HBO; or anywhere where they’ll give him a good script and a chance.

Just as long as they make it more about the characters/detective work with sources and not another pseudoscience laden CSI style show. I want shows like the old Hawaii 5-0, Rockford Files, Simon and Simon. These recent shows where models dress like lab techs and solve crimes need to end. FOCUS ON THE STORY. Sure, they can have a lab tech appear once an episode for 2 minutes to hand McGarret a file that states the lab results and then walks out of the office.

Oh this is way, as in waaaayyyy too cool for words. I was heartbroken when Moonlight went off the air (far better than the Twilight movies!) and just could never get into Three Rivers. But he is excellent, so I’m happy he’ll be in something that is sure to catch on. Yee haw!

    • Ashly

Tottally agree with you here. I hope he finally gets a show that last longer than one season.

  • syvyn11

So it’s gonna suck. And not in a vampire way.

    • Heidi

with writers from Fringe I’m intrigued

  • graceyloulou

HALLELUJAH… hallelujah…hallelujah & thanks for that terrific news!!! Congrats to Mr. O!!!

  • Ruthie

I’m not quite sure if I want this to succeed or not. “Hawaii Five-O” was such a good show; it still holds up pretty well. I think this is a needless remake. And to cast a guy who’s never had a show make it past one season? That doesn’t seem like a good sign.

    • Mr. Mike

“[T]o cast a guy who’s never had a show make it past one season?” … Obviously you never heard of Stoney Burke!

  • Michelle

Well, this show is a procedural on CBS so it stands a better shot of staying on than Moonlight and Three Rivers. Alex and Daniel Dae Kim? YES PLEASE!

  • znachki

Now we just need to know who’s cast as Dan-O.

    • Nate

I was just reading that Michael Shanks is up for the role of Dan-O, which I think would be great!

      • Vanny

I also really hope Michael Shanks can get it. Would be awesome!

      • Cathy

Michael Shanks…good choice, but I believe he is OLDER then Alex…so hard for him to be McGarrett’s side kick

    • MaryLou

      I so agree!

    • ragincajun

There’s only one person who could really do justice to the role of Dano . . .

      Josh Holloway!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Emily

        yes please

      • Suzanne

        YES, YES, YES!!!!!

  • Chad

Well this guy is the kiss of death for a show. I guess the new Hawaii 5-0 is going down harder than the Titanic.

    • Liz

Those shows had nothing to do with Alex or his acting. First show was a production nightmare, second show bad writing and no focus or character development. Alex is a fine actor and he’ll make a great cop in this role.

      • greenerpuddles

No, he pretty much sucks. He sucked before, sucked later and will continue to suck in the future. CBS inexplicably likes him, but they like people who suck. And because he sucks so much, they love him.

    • gigi

Sounds like this guy is the male Lindsay Price. C’mon…lets give him a chance.

    • beccalj

I think Moonlight got the short end of the stick since it was originally going to be renewed; it was dropped at the last minute. The writer’s strike, in my opinion, was what killed it. Three Rivers was not very good, but I don’t believe that had anything to do with Alex. It seems like police shows fare better on CBS so hopefully he has been put in a good position.

  • JinKazama

Maybe third time’s a charm/. Good luck to Alex, and Daniel Dae Kim as well

  • Lea

I would like to see him in something good but I just dont think this is it. We’ll see, I gueess. Is this the role Dean McDermott was up for?

  • dani

    Who?

  • Bianca33

Alex O’Loughlin is awesome in any role, but this will finally get him the recognition that he deserves.

    • annie

I hope so. I don’t get any charisma from him or his performances. This casting actually worries me.

  • Brittany

Thank you. Alex O’Loughlin will be very successful as detective McGarrett on the new Hawaii Five O.

Best wishes and good luck, Alex and Hawaii Five O for a long running and successful crime drama series, beginning with the 2010-2011 television season.

  • billye

i hope so because he is a good actor and every show he’s been on has been canceled. i loved hawaii five o and i hope it succeeds.

  • Maureen

Alex O’Loughlin can portray any role brilliantly. In fact, Alex is perfect for the role of detective/Lt. Commander McGarrett on Hawaii Five O. Alex will be very successful on this new crime drama for the 2010-2011 TV season on CBS this time around. GOOD LUCK!!!
