'Glee' exclusive: Molly Shannon declares war on Sue Sylvester!

Tags: , News

Has Sue Sylvester finally met her match? Hint: Hell yes she has!

In yet another triumph for the casting gurus over at Glee, sources confirm to me exclusively that SNL vet Molly Shannon is joining the ensemble as a nemesis to Jane Lynch’s Sue.

Wait, it gets better.

Her character, Brenda Castle, is described as the busty 45-year-old new astronomy teacher and badminton coach at McKinley High School who is both an alcoholic and a pill-popper.

“She becomes Sue’s enemy,” says a Glee insider.

The role is recurring and Shannon’s first episode is slated to air in May.

BTW, Glee returns in 62 days. But who’s counting? Okay, I am.

      jumping the shark?

      • Gleeful

        …the shark of awesomeness.

      • Theus

I’m so sick of people using term jumping the shark so loosely for every single change a show goes through. How the hell is this jumping the shark?

      • Brian

Maybe jumping the shark now means “making a move that is completely in line with the spirit of the show,” because that’s exactly what the casting of Molly Shannon as a Sue-rivaling, boozing, pill-popping badminton coach is. Effing PERFECT. I love this show.

      • Ambient Lite

Well put, Brian. And I’d love for an EW ban on the term “jumping the shark”…sooo annoying.
I agree, Molly Shannon is JUST what Glee needs and I could imagine her in a variety of roles there. I think it’s fun that they didn’t cast her in the most obvious role, rival cheer coach SUPERSTAR! :)

      • Maddy

I agree, I’m so tired of the lazy twerps who just throw out this overused term because they don’t actually have anything cohesive or thoughtful to add to the conversation. It’s just vacuous filler. It’s as lazy as hanging the word, “gate” on to every scandal.

      • Mark S

Is it even possible to jump the shark in 13 episodes into your first season? Please get a clue. Also, Molly Shannon is a great addition to Glee.

      • Tomm

Too many like want to be the first to say “JTS”, usually within the fist season of a show, just to be cool/whatever. This practice has JTS!

    • JasonHomey

Jumping the shark has jumped the shark. Come up with a new term, and one that makes sense. This show is great and this is a perfect casting. Molly will be awesome in this show.

  • kat

    yesssssssssssssssssssssss

  • kt

This is genius! They just keep casting the BEST guest stars!

    • Tricia

omg like NPH. more and more reasons i love this show :]

      • Sean

ditto to three posts above me, should this land where i want it to. I love the molly shannon angle! LOVE! i immediately thought of her brilliant arc on Will and Grace. NPH is stellar too.

    • Momo

No they don’t..JLo? This show is turning into the new American Idol!! Just because celebrities like this show does not mean they deserve to be on it! Of course there are some exceptions…

      • Dominic

If this is Glee’s idea of ‘stunt casting’ then it works for me. Utter awesomeness, not just Molly but the fact that Sue gets a rival.

  • max

    That is so cool!!!

  • Linnea

Glee is awesome and makes awesome castings! :)

  • Natalie

I wholeheartedly approve of this delightful news. Good going, “Glee”!

  • yukoner

    AWESOME!

  • nezo

Not a fan of Glee but I’ve always loved Molly Shannon. Good on Molly :)

  • M

I too have been counting down the days till Glee’s return. I love how it’s a badminton coach. Molly Shannon is brilliant, I can’t wait!

  • CH

Hmm…could be really awesome and funny or really annoying and over-the-top. It depends on what mood Molly Shannon’s in on filming day…

    • Brian

Hey, guess what: The entire show is over the top. Or is a high school football team winning a game by performing a choreographed dance routine to “Single Ladies” measured, even plotting?

      • Anise

        QUIET YOU AND YOUR LOGIC

  • kahuna

Yee HAWWWWWWWWWW!!! Excellent! I love Molly.

  • MissL

    Astronomy teacher????

    • BC

I had to read that twice. I was thinking of her character in “Serendipity” and first thought it read: Astrology!

Molly Shannon = One Fabulous Character Actor! Great casting, Glee. Keep it up!!

    Great casting indeed!

  • mishka

As long as the ENTIRE original cast(r,f,w,e,s,q,p,t,a,k,m,s and b) – you know the full names) stays, I’m okay.

    • springs

What about the Asian and black guy?

      • angela
