'House' boss on Huddy: 'It's going to happen'

Tagged:

The prognosis on Huddy is in, and it’s excellent.

I just hung up with House creator David Shore, and — no beating around the bush here — he promised me, “Eventually, it’s going to happen. This is the thing we’ve been dancing around — even before we knew we were dancing around it. They’re two very flawed people, but they’re two people that are very attracted to each other.

I’m a Huddy fan, [too],” Shore added. “Just keep watching the show. It’ll happen eventually.”

I can confirm that there was not a single qualifier in that sentence. I listened to the tape three times. Not a single “maybe” or “possibly” in there. Go ahead and reread it; I’ll wait.

Coincidentally, Shore also happens to be in the middle of breaking this season’s final episodes. Could it possibly culminate with real, non-hallucinatory lovemaking? My gut is telling me yes.

What’s yours saying? And do you worry that when Huddy finally does happen, a part of you might actually miss the waiting game we (and they!) have been playing for so long? Debate, discuss, deliberate below.

Ah, crap! The nightmare I hoped wouldn’t happen is happening

    • Michaela

There is not hope anymore, now We have to decide to continue to watch or not to watch, I’m deciding not to watch, and I can’t believe it because I’ve watch the show for 5 1/2 years now, but I simply can’t Huddy.

      • Michaela

        sorry: can’t stand huddy

      • Katyo

I have to agree here. There hasn’t been one point in this series where I thought “Wow, these 2 are PERFECT for each other!” I like Lisa Edelstein, I guess, but I’m frankly not that crazy about Lisa Cuddy. I think she’d just drag House down, just like this stupid romance arc is dragging down the quality of one of the best shows on TV.

      • greg h.

Katyo, what on earth makes you think this show having two people hook up is has ANYTHING to do with them being “perfect” for each other? This show is about messed up people quite possibly too smart or driven to even be happy and desperately flailing out for anything that might.

      • Mike

Thank you greg, for making an intelligent point, and for not wanting a childish Disney ending.

      • Sandra

Same here! I miss the times when this show was so much better than Grey’s Anatomy and other soap operish show. Not it’s even worse :-(

    • Epiphany

“Eventually” could be the end of this season or the series finale. It’s not really news as there’s never been any doubt that something would happen at some time between House and Cuddy.

Whether it lasts is another question.

All I ask regarding any potential House/Cuddy romance is please, please get it right! Season five was very uneven and Luddy is a disaster.

Don’t fck it up on the third attempt.

      • Billie

ITA. I would love for House and Cuddy to be together, but I’d rather see a Lucas will be gone shortly spoiler than a House and Cuddy will eventually be togther one! I dont mind waiting for a House and Cuddy hook up but Im dreading every single Lucas appearance gah!

      • Huddy

I also want to know when Lucas will be gone? That’s the real news, not an “eventually” that really doesn’t mean anything. It could happen in the last five minutes of the show’s final episode. David Shore, Stop jerking your fans around. You can only cry wolf so many times. We are not idiots.

    • maiv

the only way this is finally going to happen is when ratings start going down and they need to get them high again. read: several more seasons. I mean, we had to wait how many seasons for just fake sex?

      • kpas

Reminds me of Ross and Rachel, by the time it finally happens you’ve lost interest. Let’s move it along and get House and Cuddy together already.

    • Meg

thanks you! i CANNOT STAND huddy!

    • nika

      sigh. i know

    • JB

Ugh. I knew the show was going downhill. But this takes the cake.
      ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

      • Shawn

For those people who think that this show is going down hill, heres a fact, it FOX’s number 1 show! HOUSE isnt going anywhere anytime soon. Also when House and Cuddy do get togeather its not about the rating, its giving viewers what they want to, even if it dosnt work out where still going to be intrigued and interested to see where it goes, so if your a real HOUSE fan as I am then support the show and the storyline, just enjoy it as I do!

    • spoilerchicka

David has finally tapped into what will win House the illusive EMMY for Hugh Laurie AND very possibly for Lisa Edelstein. No one wants an Emmy to go to a #1 A-hole or a lovelorn doormat. Sorry all the Hameron shippers and Hilson folks are taking this so hard. Huddy has been the inevitable plotline for the misanthropic miserable Dr. House and his evolution into trusting people and opening up. Cuddy provides the opportunity to scare and ultimately open up the most tender aspects of House who has become somewhat annoying over the years as a jerkwad without a heart. Cuddy had become too desperate and abused by House. I for one am happy that Lucas came into the picture if only to cause some personal introspection and realizations by both House and Cuddy. Now the real test of excellence among House’s A #1 writers is to keep the Huddy relationship compelling, revealing of both these two complex interesting people and to relate it to the POTW. I can’t wait to see what David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Doris Egan can fathom for us faithful viewers. Besides, Cameron was obscenely too young for House and it would have made him look pathetic to hookup with an underling half his age. Bleck! Besides 13.55 MILLION viewers for Cuddy’s 5to9 episode confirms David Shore knows exactly what he’s doing. David, just promise us it will be in the season 6 2010 year that this move happens. Please kick Lucas out of the picture and get House to knock up Cuddy at last and they have to keep it secret. Can’t wait for the angst and the drama…or along something like that plot suggestion. Yay DS! Aussie, does it take more snow days to earn these killer inside stories???? Love you MA!

      • Kelly

I dont think cuddy should actually get pregnant by house, but I think it will be really interesting to see an episode where house/cuddy suspect a pregnancy. I’d like to know houses reaction…

      • Laura

Just a note, the show has been hovering around 13 million per ep all season, the Cuddy episode did not set any rating records here. As far as Huddy goes, to each is own, but I have no desire to watch a show that brings such a horribly derived couple together. Their chemistry is long gone and isn’t coming back.

      • Vanessa

What? So now House is going to stop being a jerk and become a loving father to 2 kids! PLEASE! Shore has said repeatedly that House is not ever going to change very much. Having sex with Cuddy is not going to change him into a nice person or a good father. Cuddy needs to get over House and concentrate on finding a good father for her child and a good supportative mate for herself. House will never be either one of those.

      • David

5 to 9′s ratings were actually a drop from the season average. It had 1.7 million less viewers. LE isn’t a bad actress at all, but her character has been turned into a parody of itself. That’s also a big part of the reason why the season 5 ratings dropped during every Cuddy-heavy episode. The writers, producers, etc. need to drop the weak Huddy crap and focus on what the fans love about the show. A few thousand rabid Huddy fans don’t add up to the average 14.9 million viewers each week.

      • EmilyC

If you’re going to talk about ratings – at least get the facts straight. The only reason the season avg. is around 14,9 mill is because “Broken” had 17,1 mill. After that the episodes have had from 11,7 mill to 14,4 mill. viewers. The Cuddy episode is the 5th highest viewed epi of the season so far both overall and in the coveted 18-49 demo (and the 2nd highest after the first 3 epi’s). It also won the timeslot easily while going up against new episodes of the Bachelor, Chuck and How I Met Your Mother, so I’ll say it did more than OK. Go Cuddy!!

    • Belle

I for one will be pleased to see a hook up between these two complex characters as I think it will allow for some great dramatic arcs to occur in the series – dramatic arcs played out by two incredibly compelling and proficient actors. This has the potential to be the most beautifuly, painfully complicated relationship that TVdom has ever tackled. I hope DS and his writing team do the passion and the angst that HL and LE have subtley built between these two characters over six seasons proud. The only thing that concerns me is the “keep watching” – this could mean that the House/cuddy doesn’t happen for another season! I, for one, hope things heat up a little earlier than that. So to all the nay sayers that think this will ruin the show I say bah humbug! I think this will be brilliant, just as the complex relationship Wilson has with House adds layers to the show so too will this relationship with Cuddy! I can’t wait!!!!!

      • Grace

        Agree

      • flip

        Yeah , complex tv characters…..

      • Tracy

I am very much a wait and see person , I would like to see House and Cuddy hook up , whether it’s permanent or temporary . Cocsidering that the characters are very much screwed up in terms of having relationships , I kind of doubt their romance will last beyond the series finale , then again , House is changing as a person , hopefully not too much for the series , and Cuddy ‘s handling of her personal life is not as bad as it seems to me , except for the dreaded presence of Lucas , who could have been so much better in another storyline involving being a private investigator , so maybe they will make it as a couple , married or not , only time will tell.

      • JADEN

Totally agree! The chemistry between House and Cuddy is so special and brings such an interesting layer to the show, that I just hope that the writers get it right when they do decide to move forward with their relationship! I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed :-)

    • Someone

Ditto, Huddy is the lamest ship ever.

      • Someone else

Hilson is the best! Hameron<Huddy<Hilson FtW

      • Someone

        Yup, Hilson is awesome!

But it’s still not the reason why I hate Huddy. I actually liked Hameron, and Chameron too.

      • m.

Although i generally trust mr Shore (he have kept House pretty interesting, i even like this and previous season), I don’t like the idea of Huddy. Cuddy is boring and I have never seen real chemistry between House and Cuddy, even in the episodes where they tried to create it (like the episode with the cuddy’s table or dream sex episode). I’ve always thought Cuddy as one of the weaker character in House.

      • Rin

Can’t stand ‘Huddy’ never will but eww’Hameron’ is just flat out gross. Only Hilson makes sense. Hilson Hilson Hilson Hilson repeat after me Hilson Hilson Hilson Hilson

      • LadyGaga

        You forgot Bones!

    • Janine

      Wah wah wah.

    • scarlett

I totally agree ~ although I can’t stand Lucas. Many shows have gone to hell by introducing something like this!

    • JADEN

Yeesss to Huddy – only couple I care about on TV and they’re not even a couple! Not that this is really news – anybody watching the show could see this one coming – still it’s nice to hear it from the boss in this so far bleak Huddy season – and please get rid of Lucas soon……..!!

    • LadyGaga

Ah great! The dream I hoped would happen one day is gonna happen!

  • Domenica

My heart just did a little dance. They’re my favorite couple EVER, and I am so incredibly thrilled right now. I think the show can make them work, and I am so excited to see this play out.

    • Kelly

I just did a huge ‘Yesssssssss’ cuddy-esque scene! Finally sheesh, although this is David Shore we are talking about here so Im still saving some excitement for when I would actually get to see it! They are my favorite tv “couple” as well!

      • Nat

Completely agree w/ both Domenica and kelly. OMG FINALLY! this news just made my Year!

      • tyrah

i am so pumped right now that NOTHING, not even the haters can ruin this news for me! ::does happy dance:: ::bows to DS::

      • Liz

I´m dancing right now. Best news in a long long time. House and Cuddy are my favorite characters. I hope writers will do a good job with these two. Something sexy, funny and non soapy (we had enough with the Luddy crap).

  • dana Landman

    I’m in tears.

    • Eve

tears of joy I hope :)

      • dana Landman

        of course!

  • cupotrevor

Dear God NO please Mr. Shore turn away from this horrible thought…I’d rather see House with the porcupine from Wilson’s bathtub than with Cuddy!

    • Helen

      It was a possum.

    • jessie

ohh wow grow up just because u dont want to see house and cuddy together doesnt mean that everybody wants to here about it, it is really ok to keep ur opinion to urself im sure that nobody would mind!!! ohh and it was a possum that was in Wilsons tub!!!

      • Riley

So if we have an opinion that conflicts with the news above, then we should shut up?

        I think NOT.

House/Possum for the LOVE! ANY THING BUT HUDDY CRAP!

      • nika

and not everyone wants to hear YOU squealing about huddy either

      • JB

Why do people who want Huddy have more of a right to post their opinions than people who don’t?

TPTB should be made aware of the bazillions of fans who think this is a bad idea. Because they seem to be under the mistaken impression that all fans actually WANT to see this happen.

        Um, no.

    • Michael

I’d prefer House hooked up with Steve McQueen rather than Cuddy

      • chitra

        Or with Ball-y :D

  • walter

Yeah, House will do it gimpy-style.

  • Nancy

Valuing the whole show on the pairing inside it is killing House for me right now. I don’t care about ships, I care about the show and I can’t take another finale campaign built up around OMG WATCH FOR HUDDY when there were far bigger issues actually being dealt with in the episode. Please have faith in your show for it’s storylines and stop just hanging it on a pairing. What are the producers going to bribe people with when these two actually are a couple, exactly?

    • sjoes

I totally agree with Nancy and that’s coming from a huge Edelstein fan. The show has become an after school special with two 40 plus characters in a teenage arc. Keep watching the show and eventually IT will happen? Oh puhleeeze!

    • ada22

thank you ! It was a slap in the face to see that all Huddy promo for the finale, it made me not watch it in fact. This is total disrespect for the larger fanbase because shippers of any kind are by no means the majority.

The Huddy is not only bad and illogical if you’ve seen the first seasons ,it’s also very immature,it is just impossible.

What happened to the show that had a deeper meaning? I want that smart show again. Besides, come on,why can’t a woman and a man just be friends for once? Why does a female character on House always have to depend on their relationship to House or another man(13′s case)?

      • JB

        Agreed.

      • Nancy Bee

ada22- “This is total disrespect for the larger fanbase because shippers of any kind are by no means the majority.” –How do you figure that? You think every single House fan shows up on these blogs???? You’re fooling yourself. No way of knowing that, girl.

    • Nancy Bee

To dispute some here, House is and always HAS been, on the periphery of the medical case of the week, about the various relationships among the Docs. And House and Cuddy have a long history which House clearly wants to expand on (and seemed to want to even before he knew it!!)–even if he does act like a little boy in pursusing it:o) He’s just GOT to change from the little boy pulling the hair of the little girl he likes, to the grown man taking a leap of faith. otherwise Cuddy will never go for it–he’s hurt her too much in the past, but there are clearly strong feelings there, and a deep-seated trust despite, or maybe because of, their shared history. I’ve been there a few times. I can relate to her mistrust, while being pulled in anyway, in spite of herself.

Nothing in life, emotions and relationships especially, is ever truly black-and-white.

      • JPNS

Excellent post – nice to see that someone else seems to get that this show is about HOUSE – his world, his practice – his relationships, real or imagined ! Anyone who has not yet caught the dynamic between Cuddy and House has been asleep for years… it started during episode one and has been evolving since then.

      • Al

@JPNS: I beg to differ about your assumption that H/Cu existed from episode one. If you watch s1, it’s rather clear that they operate on a professional basis only: Cuddy calls House “Dr. House” and seems to spend most of her time yelling at him, and not in a UST way either. Signs of a more personal (platonic) relationship don’t begin to develop until late s2/early s3. It’s kind of shoved to one side in 24, but s5 is one huge Huddy-fest, or at least the latter part is.

      • Al

Oh, bugger. I meant s4. How did 24 get in there? o_O

    • Jenn

The show is about House, and House’s life. As important as medical cases and drama with life threatening diseases and puzzles and etc. are in it, there are also OTHER elements to his life, like his relationships with people, and Cuddy. I personally love the Huddy arcs, as it gives more insight to the characters we’re watching the show about. Honestly, I like everything about the show. Maybe not Lucas, but I still like to see how he brings out Cuddy and House’s characters, etc. There are other things in House’s life than medical issues.

      • Jade

THIS 1000000000 times! The show is about House and he is a man who likes women so we are bound to see him in a relationship with one! I’m glad it will be Cuddy!

    • Jen

      THIS

  • adreanne

    Yay! Huddy L O L

  • Eve

All I can say is : FINALLY !!!!
Don’t worry Mr.Shore I don’t mind waiting as this dance is fun to watch. It’s just very good to know my patience won’t be for nothing !!
Very very happy about this! Best on-screen couple EVER !

    • Kumiko

I agree with this 100%. I don’t mind waiting and I love the dance. But now I know that I can sit back and enjoy the ride. Best show evar. <3

  • nick

I dont mind it happening eventually but Im enjoying the storyline with Michael Weston right now, he’s awesome.

  • Gerry

Hmmmmm anticipation is always better than the act…. hope if they do hook up it wont ruin the show cause its my favorite :)

  • Misha

When he breaks her heart because he’s a miserable bastard through and through, I will laugh. I definitely think Lucas is better and a much healthier relationship for her (and Rachel. They’re a package deal.)

    • ari

There’s something a little off about Lucas. I can’t figure out exactly what yet, but he’s done a few things that I felt were a little along the line of trying to control Cuddy’s life. I think he’ll do something that causes her to give him the boot and we’ll all be shocked and, in the end, agree with her decision. Much as I think Cuddy and House are destined to be together, perhaps on and off rather than “forever,” I like their relationship, yet at the same time feel a little creeped out by it. Weird, huh?

      • Nancy Bee

I agree re: Lucas– I have a feeling he’s not the angel he’s painted to be right now, but he clearly has strong feelings for Cuddy–and I do think if anyone gets hurt in this it will be Lucas.

Not creeped out by House and Cuddy, tho–that IS strange to me, but I do think that’s why those who are opposed are so strongly opposed!! :o )

The problem with Lucas is that he knows he is in competition w House, no matter how much Cuddy would deny it. That’s the death knell for any relationship.

      • Lala

I just think Lucas is immature and uncomplicated. Maybe if these were all real people I’d like for Cuddy to be with someone nice and simple, but seeing as how it’s entertainment, I want Cuddy to be with the bad boy! Their flaws are what keeps their characters interesting, and it would be fun to kind of see how that’s explored in a relationship (or sex, whatever.)

    • House

I know, right? How many fans are deluding themselves into thinking Huddy can actually work out for good?
I give it 7 episodes at most (ifthe writers are smart at all), but even if I’m wrong, I know it will eventually fail.

    • Grace

There was always something creepy about lucas, ever since he came in S5.

    • Huddy

Lucas us creepy and a moron. It’s degrading that Cuddy is with him. She’s lost all self respect in this Luddy arc.

      • Tammy Richardson

I love House and all the complex layers to the show. Not crazy about Lucas. I could wait for the unfolding and the growing relationship with House and cuddy but I do not like the animosity between House and Cuddy. It is fine for them to wait and get to see every side of each other.
I think that Broken was one of the episodes ever of House. Even if they let House go there and do some work. It showed a human side of him that even his colleagues have not seen. I liked House and Lydia together because he was still the same sarcastic, intelligent genius we have come to know and love but he had the human factor. That would be the thing you want Cuddy and House to bring out in each other. They could and really still stay the same. David Shore is a great writer and I am sure he will do a great job with it. The relationship doesn’t have to take over the show it just grounds the two.

  • Lise

    BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!! ABOUT TIME!!!!

    Thanks Michael!!

    • steve

(no offense to any of you who want to read this, but…) am i the only one that was annoyed that the news was plastered on the home page instead of something that prevented those of us who prefer not to get spoilers from seeing it (like “House: Spoiler”)? personally i think ausiello is an as.hole for this crap. Maybe it’s just me, but dude’s a prick.

      • JB

If you look up “prick” in the dictionary, there is a picture of Ausiello. I would have assumed that was his goal.

      • Christie

You seriously expect to see spoiler alerts on everything on an ENTERTAINMENT WEBSITE? If you don’t want spoilers, just wait for the show and don’t come on here! I’m baffled by your lack of common sense.

      • Lala

steve – Agreed! Someone should have had the wherewithal to post Spoiler Alert in the title (not sure if Ausiello makes the titles or someone else does though…)
Christie – This isn’t solely a spoiler site, ‘entertainment website’ extends beyond what’s going to happen on TV shows. They usually have SPOILER ALERT! written in the title, and you can click if you want to view them. Obviously, that didn’t happen.

      • fish eye no miko

Christine: Are you aware that EW has links on other Sites, and they show these same headlines? So whenever Ausiello uses one of these spoiler-y headlines, he’s spoiling stuff for more people than just the ones who come here.

  • lucky

    ick….enough said

  • kok

House should be the one show that ISN’T about shipping!!! I loathe this whole idea.

More amazing seasons like 4th one wanted. Oh and J Mo .

And less Foreman . I know he’s like the token negro but he’s plain annoying, unimaginative and boring. Not to mention his awful relationship with Olivia Wilde. Now she should’ve had a one night stand with House if House had to have a non hooker/non Stacy love storyline

    • ClaireK.

“I know he’s like the token negro” Nice.

  • Jessebelle

Guh. I am NOT looking forward to this. I would much rather there be no relationships on the show than Huddy.

    • Pockets

Amen, amen. I can’t understand how anyone thinks this couple could work. It’s painfully to watch. The only “love” that exists between these two is “lust”, which GUESS WHAT, is not the foundation of love.

      • Pockets

        *painful, whoops.
