'All My Children' star David Canary - aka Adam/Stuart Chander - announces retirement

So long, Adam/Stuart Chandler! The Emmy-winning David Canary has announced he’ll retire from ABC’s All My Children at the end of April. The actor, who joined the soap in 1983, won five daytime Emmys for playing Adam Chandler and his timid twin, Stuart. ABC said fans should look forward to a “scandalous” end to his marriage to Annie (Melissa Claire Egan) and a reunion with one of his former wives before Canary departs the show this spring. Fortunately, Canary promises to make occasional appearances in the future.

“My career on All My Children has given me more than words could ever covey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment,” Canary said in a statement. “Viewers will be happy with how Adam departs the canvas, and I know that leaving JR (Jacob Young) as head of the Chandler household will continue to provide the show with many great stories to come. This is not the last you’ve seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan.”

wow. he’s been on that show for as long as i can remember. he aged very well too! good for him and i hope he has a long and happy retirement!

  • Jessica

All My Children wont be the same without him. Maybe he’ll leave with Brooke since she’s coming back to town briefly.

    • gigi

      That’s what I was thinking/hoping too!!

      • jake

Is brooke only coming back briefly, please say it isn’t so!

  • Becca

Not totally surprised by this. But I’m still a bit saddened.

  • queensgirl

That is sad, the end of an era. (And, not to name drop, but I met him once and he was very nice. :) )

  • caliban821

That is a shame but it makes some sense with the passing of James Mitchell. Adam needs his Palmer to trade barbs with. However I agree he should go off with Brooke-his favroite ex-wife

  • Ronnie

I can’t fathom All My Children without Adam (and still can’t believe they killed off Stuart). Adam going off with Brooke would be a great ending.

  • Lady Pirate

Wow. AMC without Adam. Bad enough Stuart’s gone. It was always so interesting to see him playing to such different characters.

  • Vivi

Noooo! He’s my one constant from all these years I’ve been watching the show! Started when I was 12/13 and instantly fell in love with him (I’m now 28). I was so happy win he won his Daytime Emmy. I was so sadden when Stuart was killed. David is one talented man. He is AMC, in my opinion.

  • Annie

Another blow to daytime :( Canary is one of the best actors to grace daytime and I will miss him terribly. I am glad that Adam will reunite with Brooke though, because she was my favorite of all his wives,(beside Erica).

  • Alexander Cain Calloway

He was the biggest interest to me on the show and I will definitely lose interest totally now that he’s gone, just like I did with OLTL after they lost Asa. At least there is still GH and the Bell soaps with some good strong male patriarchs.

when is he coming back I love him

  • aa

gonna miss adam i remember when he came in as erica’s white knight to save her company. not too surprised since amc made the poor decision to kill off stuart; i guess this is why brooke is coming back.

    • pk

I don’t think it was a “poor decision” on AMC’s part as much as it was a mutual decision to give Mr. Canary a breather from one of the roles as he has not been 100% healthy. According “Daytime Confidential” this made it easier for Mr. Canary to retire when his contract expired, especially if his illness progressed.

      • Spike

I’m sure the show’s decision to move production from NYC to LA played a large part in his decision to retire.

  • HipSoCalGuy

Sad news. David Canary is one of the best actors on TV. Thanks for covering this EW.

  • They killed STUART???

    GAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I, too, am sad that David is retiring, but I hope he has a long and wonderful retirement.
AMC wasn’t the same without Palmer, I can’t imagine what it’ll be like without Adam.

I haven’t watched regularly in years… I didn’t realize they had killed off Stuart. I’m so glad I didn’t have to witness that. But I watched for YEARS, from the time I was a little kid (my mom watched) through adulthood. Decades. The characters still seem like old friends.
The show won’t be the same without him, without doubt. Adam and Stuart were two great characters. And reuniting Adam with Brooke would be fabulous.

  • bringbackrocky

As far as I know, no actor on daytime has ever won as many Lead Actor Daytime Emmys as David Canary. Besides his long and storied history on AMC, he was also a regular on Bonanza, a fact I’m not sure some of his younger fans know. He has been a class act and a fabulous performer for so many years. I agree with those posters who mention him in the same breath as James Mitchell. AMC will never be the same without the characters of Palmer Cortlandt and Adam Chandler but, as fans, we were lucky to have them as long as we did.

    • Shannon

I believe Anthony Geary (Luke on General Hospital) has won 6, but I could be wrong

      • bringbackrocky

Shannon – I stand corrected. You are right.

      • Mia

Do not forget Justin Deas and Erika Slezak both have 6 Emmys.

  • MaryJane

What, he’s still on that show? You mean, I didn’t have to watch all those Bonanza reruns on TV Land to see David Canary all this time? LOL. Happy Retirement, David. You’re the Best, Candy.

    • gigi

hehehe! Candy is my retro crush! David Canary was dreamy back in the day…still is! We’ll Miss You!!
