This Just In: Fox cancels 'Past Life'

Past Life has taken its last breath. Fox has decided to pull the low-rated (and critically drubbed) drama off the air, effectively canceling it. Original episodes of Kitchen Nightmares will fill the Thursday void beginning next week. Fox says Past Life will return to the schedule at a later date, which is code for “Summer Fridays!”

Will anyone miss it?

I thought the whole premise was stupid. Mainly because it wasn’t selfsubstaining. How many people know, believe or have trouble with their past life? It seems like it should’ve been one TV movie.

    • Maddy

It WAS stupid, mostly because there is not past life, it’s just ego that wants some to believe that they’re so important they live on in other or higher forms. Just accept that you’re just a clump of cells and that this your one and only shot dude–it’s yours to accomplish, screw up, or waste, but either way, you’re not coming back. No do-overs.

Can you say for sure that there is no past life? Well, there’s no way to know for sure that there isn’t or is…but still for those who believe in this stuff, they find it interesting. Is it right to force other people not to be able to believe, see something just because you don’t believe it yourself? There are many things that people believe that others find silly. Look throughout history. The idea that the planets revolve around the sun was frowned upon by many people who believed the planets revolved around the Earth, but now we know that the latter idea is indeed false. Therefore, there is no way one can completely discount an idea before it is proven. Who knows, maybe someday there will be evidence disproving or proving past lives as true.

One can’t say *for sure* that there is no such thing as “past life,” but the same could be said for unicorns, leprechauns, and lots of other silly concepts. I’m not sure why this ridiculous concept bothered me as much as it did, because we’ve had plenty of relatively serious ESP shows, vampire shows, etc. It did bother me, though, but at least part of the problem was that the show was so lackluster. The cast wasn’t anyone noteworthy, the promotion was minimal. So the network has a silly concept, puts next to no effort into it, and expects it to fail (apparently)–so why bother at all?

      • Maddy

Who in the world said anything about “forcing” other people to believe a certain way? Certainly not me. My view is that if people want to spend time they have fretting about past lives have at it. As for science, I don’t believe in cosmic do-overs because it doesn’t work mathmatically. But if it gives other people comfort or feeds their sense of self-importance or excuses actions in this life, have at it, it hurts no one. But in my view, once you’re dust in the wind you stay that way.

Just because YOU don’t believe doesn’t make it so. 350 million Buddhists would disagree with you just for starters.
But honestly, you don’t have to believe in reincarnation to watch the show.
I really enjoyed it – hoped it would get better over time .. some of the leaps they made from vague flashbacks were pretty big .. but it had potential. I’d love a chance to write a script or two for the show.

Figures FOX would give it only 3 weeks to make or break. Idiots.

        M addy is a moron!

Hi Madday, just because you don’t have the knowledge doesn’t mean that past life doesn’t exist. In the ancient religious scripts of Hinduism, details about past life is clearly mentioned. The whole thing revolves around Karma..so just don’t think you can do all the crap in this life escape…sorry dude..doesn’t work this way…Cheers….Staph_A

Slightly. I will miss having Richard Schiff on my TV.

    • Robyn

I agree. I watched this just to see ‘Toby’ from West Wing again.

      • Vic

        Me too

      • Jen

        Same.

  • Kevin

You know, I had the TV on Fox last night while talking to my wife and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what show I was watching. I thought it was Lie to Me, but I would have recognized some of people. Now I know. I didn’t even know this was a show…

  • Erin

Sorry, but I don’t even know what Past Life is or who’s in it.

  • MSR

Haha, I was just told to give this series a shot and was going to watch an episode online this weekend. Now I don’t need to. Friday Night Lights marathan, here I come!

  • Thom

It’s too bad it was up against Grey’s It was an excellent show :)

    • Catie

Yeah I agree…Grey’s is one of the number one shows on. They should have put it on like Wednesday. I don’t think the new show “Human Target” is that great. I’m bummed because I really enjoyed Past Life!

  • Stacey

I only heard of Past Life when I saw a commercial for it last night. And it looked like Medium meets all the other supernatural shows, so in other words, shite.

  • Nektaria

Not me! I won’t miss it!
    I need FRINGE BACK!
They put Fringe in hiatus for this?? WTF! …and now it’s cancelled!
A big applause to FOX with it’s “right” decisions!

    • Cody

I AGREE! i want my FRINGE back! this is good news for FRINGE, at least i hope.

    • Cass

FRINGE and BONES both went on hiatus for the same time period, in part because of the Olympics, and in part because (I’m fairly certain) AMERICAN IDOL will be spilling over into Thursdays for a few weeks. I’m glad new episodes of both shows will come back on the same day; it’s also presumably better for each’s ratings. I don’t think PAST LIFE was ever meant to take over FRINGE’s timeslot, especially when it would have to compete against other powerhouse shows in that timeslot when networks start airing new eps again post-Olympics. Excited for the return of BONES and FRINGE!

  • hayley

I actually really liked the show. It was a new take on a crime drama and I thought the cast would settle in after a few episodes. Oh well, I’ll add it to my long list of shows I have loved that have been cancelled before their time. (I’m still waiting for the next season of Swans Crossing)

    • The Dude

Was Swans Crossing that late afternoon soap aimed at teens and pre-teens for when they got home from school back in the early to mid 90s?

      • hayley

yep! It was (in my 14 year old head) Awesome!

      • The Dude

I just remember the wannabe hacker guys. I think at one point they “hacked” into some government thing and set off a rocket if I remember correctly.

      • hayley

lol. yeah, it wasn’t the best show, but I was definitely entertained.

      • Sarah D

Wasn’t Sarah Michelle Gellar on that soap? I remember there was sort of fantasy seen where someone jumped off a pier to rescue a girl. I was really young but I was really into it!

    • Amanda

OMG – I LOVED Swan’s Crossing. Still waiting to find out if Sydney was really Sandy Swan! ;)

    • RJ

Regarding Swan’s Crossing, I hated that they ended it when they did, but then realized, “you gotta grow up sometime” ;)

  • The Dude

The ads made this seem like it took the worst elements of Medium and Cold Case to one craptacular piece of ****. I never bothered watching so for all I know it was an excellent show, but I doubt it.

    • forrest

I couldn’t agree more. All I saw was the promo, and it creeped me out. No thanks and it won’t be missed.

  • david w

never heard of it but if it was really a fox show it was only a matter of time till they started moving it around to different time slots so its fans couldn’t find it and it would end up canceled wich is why I’ve stopped watching any and all fox shows no point in getting hooked on a show that is destined to never getting an ending.

    • m.

Did you watch it? I will give Fox props for trying something other than medical-police-law procedural, but the show was bad. Really bad.
One needs really good writing and really good cast to make this kind of show work. The cast wasn’t bad, but you would need Hugh Laurie kind of good cast for this kind of show.

  • mb

I wanted to give it a chance, so I watched one and a half episodes. It was nice seeing Richard Schiff again, but I’m sorry to say the writing, the stories and the acting didn’t engage me at all.

  • 3rdrocker

Okay, I’d be lying if I said I was sad. Now, bring back Lie to Me sooner, Fox!! :)

  • Catherine

It wasn’t a bad show, when I first heard about it I thought it would be terrible. But it doesn’t surprise me that it was canceled, I think that Fox killed it by putting it up against Grey’s, CSI and Supernatural. There’s no way a new show can survive in that time slot against those shows.

    • Catie

and not only grey’s and csi, but the office too. just didn’t stand a chance. but i loved it!
