Pilot Intel: Swoosie Kurtz joins 'Mike & Molly'

Pushing Daisies scene-stealer Swoosie Kurtz has landed a series regular role in Mike & Molly, CBS’ comedy pilot about an overweight couple struggling with food issues. Kurtz is playing the role of Joyce, mom to the still-uncast Molly. (Bill Gardell is playing Mike.) The project hails from comedy king Chuck Lorre’s factory of hits, so chances are very good that Kurtz is out partying tonight.

AWESOME i LOVE Swoosie! I think Diane Neal would be PERFECT to play her daughter! Diane DEF. has comedic chops and could totally hold her own next to Swoosie!

Did you read the whole article? Mike and Molly are “an overweight couple.” Diane Neal is very thin. My guess? They’ll cast a relative unknown as the female lead, since there are very few well-known, mainstream actresses who would fit the description of “overweight” and “struggling with food issues.”

they could get that girl from Drop Dead Diva…she’s funny…and she could get more exposure by being on two shows!

      • Kristin

yes I did read the whole artice and she has stated she is overweight by hollywood standards (a casting direction even told her that), even though thats not true and she is def. not overweight, they dont say HOW overweight the couple would be..they could always add a few layers to play up the weight. It was just a suggestion thats all.

  • Heather

Woo hoo! I kinda hope it was Lee Pace but this is still great too

  • OrangeVanity

    Sara Rue would be perfect!

    • BT

Sara is on Jenny Craig as their new spokesperson so she won’t be big enough to play the part either

    • cas

Except that (a) she’s not actually overweight by any standard’s but hollywood’s, and (b) she’s milking a Jenny Craig endorsement right now, so she’ll be super-skinny before too long.

      • cas

Sorry, BT, I started that comment like an hour ago and got distracted before I could come back and post it. Sorry to repeat you.

Sara Rue was the original concept actress, but, the actress had to sign a 5 year weight maintenance contract and she did the whole Jenny Craig thing. Somebody suggested that chick from Drop Dead Diva…OH GOD NO!!! She is awful. There are so many other actresses out there that are size 14ish. One I worked with named Anna Gordon is FABULOUS. She is an improvisational actress. Also another one Kinna McInroe (she was in Office Space). They are much better choices

Since this is the Hollywood version of overweight, i assume the wife will be a size 6?

    • whatevs

In America, a size 6 is widely considered to be underweight for some reason. Hollywood isn’t the only place with unreasonable standards of living.

      • llevinso

Where have you heard this? I’ve never heard someone say Size 6 is underweight. But in Hollywood it’s close to plus size.

      • Sue1

Right. In Hollywood size 12 is considered XL.

  • evan

Diane Neal? Seriously?! As in Diane Neal from SVU? She’s not overweight. . .

    • Kristin

I never said she was but they dont say HOW overweight the couple would be..they could always add a few layers to play up the weight. It was just a suggestion thats all. Shes a super talented and hilarious person she could totally hold her own in a comedy. Thats all =)

  • whatevs

Chuck Lorre? Isn’t this the guy who created Two and a Half Men? Ugh.

    • Buzz

      I second that uhg.

      • bamalam

Chuck Lorre also created Big Bang Theory…but I’m assuming that you don’t like that show either.

  • BT

This sounds like a lame idea for a sitcom

    • Buzz

Lorne Micheals tried it previously, a few years ago but his show never aired ( if it made it past the pilot) , called Think and Thin w/ Jessica Capshaw…
Lousy title didn’t do it any favors!

  • Sweet

Sarah Rue sounds perfect but she’s doing Jenny Craig as a spokeswoman to LOSE weight… Bad timing..

  • Harold

I love the Jenny Craig commercials. Valerie Bertinelli rules!

  • Nick B

Wow, talk about a downgrade. Sigh.

  • cap

How about Melissa McCarthy from Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who? Her comedy chops are great and she would fit the bill perfectly!

    • LuvSookie

AWESOME!!!!! But if only she were too busy shooting a Gilmore Girls movie to committ. One can hope right?

      • Ben W

Melissa McCarthy would be perfect…i miss her being on Samantha Who? she was hysterical on that

    • LadySolitaire

She would be great for the role. She’s awesome and has great comedic/comic timing. I love her.

  • Dave

How utterly disappointing. From the brilliance of Pushing Daisies to the stupidity of Chuck Lorre. It’s a sad day when Lorre is labeled a “comedy king.” His shows are terrible (well, one of them is at least; the other is mediocre at best). But I guess his particular brand of mindless drivel is what the people want, seeing as how his shows are the highest-rated comedies on TV, and shows like Pushing Daisies get canceled after 20 episodes. A sad day indeed.

  • TV Gord

Quit slamming Lorre. He’s also responsible for the hilarious Big Bang Theory!

Kathy Brier (ex-OLTL) would be great for this show.

There was also a 70s sitcom called The Dumplings with a similar premise, but whether it’s that one or Lorne Michaels’ or Lorre’s, the execution is going to be very different…and very funny!

  • Barb

I’m betting the girl will only be ‘Hollywood’ overweight, like on the Mary Tyler Moore show, where the ‘overweight’ girl was not thin, but was not obese either.

  • Sara

Unless “overweight couple struggling with food issues” is secret code for “overweight couple trying to bring attention to food issues like corn subsidies, food deserts, an end to factory farming, increased local and organic food, etc, while dealing with society’s prejudices due to their weight” then this sounds horrible. Let’s make fun of the fatties, who we all know are fat because they eat so freaking much!
