Exclusive: The real story behind Adam Rodriguez' surprising 'CSI: Miami' comeback

adam-rodriguezImage Credit: Robert Pitts/LandovLast week, Adam Rodriguez whipped CSI: Miami fans into a frenzy when he announced via Twitter that “Eric Delko will be back full time 4 all of season 9!” The news came seven months after the actor went off contract with the hit procedural after failing to come to terms on a new deal with CBS. (At the time, Rodriguez said he agreed to return for 10 episodes to give Delko a proper send-off.) Why the turnaround? And what does this mean for Delko (or, more importantly, Delko and Calleigh)? Rodriguez, who’s currently wrapping up his recurring stint on Ugly Betty as Hilda’s beau, took some time off from fighting a nasty cold to give me the scoop. (Additional reporting by Sandra Gonzalez)

I thought you were leaving this season. What happened?
ADAM RODRIGUEZ:
That was the plan. As we talked about last time, we got to a crossroads last year where [CBS and I] wanted different things. And one thing that was important was going back to finish the character properly. I think when the fans got the news that Delko wasn’t going to be back full-time and when they actually saw he wasn’t back full-time, they felt there was something missing from the show. They were very vocal about that and I have to give credit to CBS that they paid attention to it.

In other words, they met your demands?
RODRIGUEZ:
That certainly had something to do with it. I think, you know, a lot of it had to do with both parties even being willing to hash something out. [The first] time, it was really CBS that walked away [from negotiations] quickly. I’m not going to pull any punches, that’s just the way it was. I think that fans really made it known that the show wasn’t the same without Delko. And like I said, CBS was wise enough to pay attention to that and make sure that they kept the chemistry of the show the way the fans wanted it.

Did CBS specifically tell you this was a result of fan response?
RODRIGUEZ:
They certainly said that was one of the things. There’s no doubt that was the major reason.

Some fans are worried that, for financial reasons, producers will be forced to cut another member of the cast now that you’re back.
RODRIGUEZ:
I would certainly hope not. I would be very, very disappointed if that was the decision that was made. I can certainly tell you that the agreement we came to should not warrant that happening at all.

Should I take that to mean they didn’t back the Brinks truck up to your house?
RODRIGUEZ:
[Laughs] Certainly, I can’t complain, but, no, that wasn’t the case. One of the things [they did] to sweeten the deal was they’re allowing me to write and direct at least one episode next season. That was something that was really attractive to me.

Is it safe to assume that Delko will be leaving the D.A.’s office and rejoining the team?
RODRIGUEZ:
That’s my guess. I don’t have confirmation of that, but I don’t know what else [they could do]… I think it might be interesting to explore [his current job] a little further before he actually comes back to the team.

What does this mean for Delko and Calleigh?
RODRIGUEZ:
That also remains to be seen. I’m curious to see what they have in mind. But I think we have to go all the way down the road at this point. I would really love to explore the relationship fully and see what it’s like to have these people that have had this attraction to each other and are finally getting into this relationship for real after all this time. It certainly took a long enough for it to actually happen. I think we owe it to the people who wanted to see it happen to give them the whole ride as opposed to making it a short one, [especially since] it’s not about me leaving now. Now that I’m going to stay, I think that we’ll have a little more latitude as far as what we can do with the relationship.

Not gonna lie, I was sort of getting used to him not being there. But it’s true that the show isn’t the same without Delko.

Yeah, the show isn’t the same without Delko — for the first time in years, it’s watchable.
      .
And Mr. Cardboard is going to go from merely being someone who can’t act to someone who can’t act, write or direct next season. Sheesh! I don’t think anybody’s liver is going to be able to withstand the drinking games that are going to come with the even more grandiose displays of Rodriguez’s ineptitude when he helms his own Very Special Episode next season.
      .
Even as camp, the show is done.

Thank you. Enough of these CSIers that can’t make up their minds. Oh well guess we’re back to frowning and brooding and icky sex with Calleigh.
He’s back and they killed off Speedle…there really is no justice.

      • Heather

You are crazy! Adam’s acting is superb! I love the chemistry between him and Calleigh, as well as the rest of the cast! I am SO happy he’s returning, and hope he stays for even longer! The show is not half as good without Eric Delko’s character!

    • Harriet

You’re right … the show was really missing something without Eric on-board full time. I enjoyed Adam’s charisma and his easy chemistry with the rest of the cast. And I missed seeing Eric working with Horatio and Ryan. Eddie Cibrian (Jesse) was a second-rate replacement and a poor fit for the show. Now that Adam will be back next season, I’ll have a reason to be excited about watching CSI Miami again!

      • Annie

If CSI needs to bounce a character to afford Delko’s return, Jesse is the perfect fit…his character is supposed to be edgy with his secret issue, but he’s just irritating and dull!!! Getting rid of him would be a great move!!!

      • vella

I’m glad Delko is back. The show wasn’t the same when they killed of Speedle, then Delko. I’m glad at least one of them are back. I really like Delko’s character with or without Calleigh on his side. We all as CSI Miami’s fans must be honest and admit, the show just haven’t been the same, or should I say as exciting. Welcome Back Eric “Delko!” Looking forward to seeing your face to compliment CSI Miami.

    • kaitlyn

I bawled when he left and i missed hij everyday..i LOVE this show more than anythig and i LOVE him!! i am over the moon he is comming back!!

    • AnneFan

I know this is a late post but surely everyone can see what a terrible actor Adam Rodriguez is. There is more emotion in a cactus. I was so glad when he left and find his return a mistake.

  • Apres Ski

I’m still mad Speed left! Hell, give Delko some space off camera and keep him on the show. Love watching him!

    • caydee

i agree. i am still mad they killed off speed. i got used to not seeing him and seeing more of jesse cardoza and his mysterious past. i am over delko leaving even though he never really left.

    • RosieOGrady

I cried when Speed died. When Delko left, the whole experience changed for me. Oh, and I’m not liking Jessie Cardoza too much. It could be that the cheimstry seems off (though he did a nice thing for that homeless family last show), or because Eddie Cibrian’s a lyin’ cheatin’ bastich and I just don’t like him! LOL

  • Rashad

YES!!!! I am SO HAPPY he’s coming back!!!

  • Katie

Thank God! I hated how he would be in one episode… then leave… then show up again. Super happy he is back… the show was not the same!

    • Autumn Gray

Agreed–that was irritating. I stopped watching altogether (for a lot of reasons) but Delko’s return might pull me back. I was so mad when he and Calleigh never got to explor their relationship–that made me kinda furious. Good to see CBS is doing the right thing.

  • karen robles

im very happy that adam will be back on the show the show definally wasnt the same

  • LeeAnn

They better not cut Eddie Cibrian – he’s made the show worth watching again.

They could afford to lose that new guy, Omar, however….

    • Mamma Mia

Omar is a great addition; keep them both.

      • Heather

Yes, Omar is good, but I wish they would bring Khandi Alexander back. She and Omar could run the morgue together. She is a great actress and is missed terribly on the show.

      • denah_ian

walter/omar is funny and gets along with jesse and ryan..i hope they will still keep him…just like csi vegas, greg is funny too..characters like them aint that hard to love.

    • Linda

He is not that good of an actor and his negative publicity hurts him (his cheating ways.) The show will do well without him.

  • jr

who even watches this stupid show anymore? omg! this show is terrible!!! who cares if delko comes back? the entire show should be canceled!

    • DONNA JOHNSON

I AM SO GLAD THAT THEY ARE BRINGING BACK DELKO ENOUGH OF ALL OF THE CHANGES ON THE CSI SHOW’S LET THEM DO WHAT THEY DO WHICH IS TO EXCITE AND INTREST PEOPLE IN A VERY FANTASY WORLD THAT ONLY TELEVISION CAN DO. THEY HAVE CHANGED CSI THE ORIGINAL ONE TO THE POINT THAT I DONOT EVEN WATCH IT ANYMORE. SO PLEASE LEAVE CSI MIAMI ALONE, AND OMG HORATIO !!!

      • Annie

YOUR CAPS LOCK IS STUCK TOO???

    • wakeforce

You sound like an executive from NBC!

  • Mark Cosenza

I only started watching because of Eddie Cibrian…..

  • MaryJane

I’m so excited! WOW, I didn’t expect this, but it’s certainly an added bonus, I really did miss him and teasing us with a couple of episodes with his hot looks was not enough. Now, I hope this doesn’t mean we lose Cibrian, I absolutely love him, too. Anyway, wouldn’t mind having a show with both of these super hot guys! Double the pleasure!

  • Katy V

    YYYYEEEEESSSSSS:):):)!!!

  • clara

    ahhhh i´m very happy

i love the cuple Calleigh and Eric, is the best thing in the show *—-*

  • Robin

The show was better without Delko. Calleigh’s character deserves a much better person than him. He’s a complete drip. Mope, mope, mope, that’s all he does.

    • keri

yeah right! the show actuly started when he came on not when he went off!

  • Abbie

I am so excited that he is back!!! I can’t wait!!! He can be with calleigh more!!! They are the cutest couple on tv…this year…at least to me!!!! yay again for him being back full time!!!!! *screams*

  • Claud

i look forward to how the bring his character back. The show has come very close to “jumping the shark” on quite a few occasions, and I question how long it will continue to survive with the other 2 CSI’s doing so well. Miami is just a little to Over the top at times… Of the 3, this is the one I would not miss if it were to end up leaving the air..

  • Jenny

The show was a LOT better without Delko. I’m so sick of all the Calleigh and Eric crap I could puke. And everyone was finally happy working together. Well, everyone but Calleigh, but she’s turned into a cold bag. Ryan isn’t treated like crap anymore. All I wanted was to see more of Ryan, Natalia, and Frank and it would have been perfect. Now Rodriguez is back and I can promise you someone is going to get canned so CBS doesn’t have to lose money.

    What a jerk!

    • elzora alcox

i missed delko; definitely speed; but what about the ladies? //////////////////////////////

I AM GLAD DELKO IS COMIN BACK EVEN THOUGH SPEED IS GONE. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE WOMEN? I MISS HORATIO’S SIS-IN-LAW AND WHAT ABOUT THE M.E. COME ON CSI:MIAMI, MAKE YOUR ACTORS HAPPY.

    • Sharon

You know when I first heard that Adam was leaving; I wasn’t happy at all except for one aspect; the E/C circus. It had hijacked the show for 3.5 years and it was time to go. Now there are a number of fans who are sweating the fact that someone is might be leaving because of Adam’s return. He says he doesn’t want to see that happen but I’m actually not feeling it. I have my own therioes on the fan support (but I will keep it to myself). Let’s just say I don’t want him back and I have lost all respect for AR. Oh and please the show was surviving without him (ratings wise). He is NOT!!!! the biggest part of the show.

    • Jon

Delko was a one note dog and pony show, overrated actor who pouted and sneered into the camera to show emotion.
