I would have much preferred SGA’s Joe Flanigan, who has much more of James Garner’s easy charm than Mulroney in my opinion.
If this gets picked up, there is the potential that David Shore would have to leave House. BTW, I don’t buy Mulroney as Jim Rockford. He doesn’t have the look and charm to be a lead for this type of show.
Why is Hollywood doing all these remakes of late? Has all the creativity LEFT Tinseltown? Why not leave a show or movie that was excellent the first time around alone? I don’t get it.
The Office was a remake. Battlestar Galactica was a remake. Ugly Betty was a remake. Friday Night Lights was adapted from a film. Dexter & True Blood were adapted from books. Are you saying these shows are bad because they aren’t “original”?
Of course not, but let’s face it, I could spend hours listing remakes and spinoffs that sucked. I think most people who are posting don’t want to see a show that they have fond memories of, turned into garbage. Or even, maybe be something completely different(like a CSI) and be successful. I’m willing to give it a chance. House shows that you can have mystery with good writing and acting, so hopefully they won’t mess this up. By they way, I don’t think anyone is complaining about book adaptations, hollywood has been doing that since the silents(remakes also, but oh well).
Sorry, not feeling good about this at all.
I would have loved to have Bruce Campbell in the role. Bruce is good lookin and has a great sence of humor…Dermot Mulroney is a handsome guy…but..I dont think hes the right choice. Whoever they picked was always going to be compared to James Garner..and coming in a distant second.
I like bruce campbell, but he’s getting a bit older. I also think he’s on that show Burn Notice often.
Ah. Now Bruce Campbell would have made a terrific Rockford. Good call, Owen!
This show should not be redone–nobody will ever by like James Garner. Get a new idea, maybe?
As far as some of the criticism on remakes, I don’t mind them as much of some of you.
Most of the people who read EW or EW.com were probably not even born when the original Rockford Files aired. I’m 36 and was only 7 years old when the original show went off the air and I barely remember it through re-runs in syndication. If a TV Producer like David Shore believes that he can re-do it and make it fresh for a 2010 audience, then why not let him try?
Nathan Fillion tries to hard so I disagree with that choice. Mark Valley’s the closest thing to what James Garner did with Rockford, but I am with all others who thought this show didn’t need remaking at all….
While I like Dermot, and think he’s still one hell of a sexy guy, I just don’t see him as Rockford.
I’ve read a leak of the new Rockford script and it’s genius, updated but entirely true to the original. Even the Firebird’s in there.
I have to say, this casting kinda kills the buzz.
Not a good choice at all.
Funny how so many people disagree with this choice. I bet if this show gets picked up, you’ll be changing your tune real quick.
They needed to come up with a casting choice that was exciting enough to make us get past the reluctance to see it remade. All due respect to Mr. Mulroney, but…no.
If this does get picked up, you know NBC is going to be plugging this as “From the creator of House”
Why remake Rockford? James Garner was Rockford. Are writers in Hollywood so horrible today they can’t create detective show around an actor without resorting to copying old scripts? Its a fricken detective show, just create a new character. Hollywood writers…you are shameful.
