Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'True Blood,' 'Lost,' 'Glee,' 'Grey's,' 'Castle,' and more!

Question: Will Grey’s Anatomy address Izzie’s whereabouts at all? Or are they just going to pretend she never existed now that Katherine Heigl isn’t returning? —Mickey
Ausiello:
They’re definitely not going to pretend she never existed. In fact, I’m told the Izzie issue will be addressed during May sweeps. For her part, Katherine Heigl thinks her Jan. 21 farewell — while not originally intended to be her last episode — oddly works as a bookend to Izzie’s story. “Even though there’s a part of me that would like to go back and do the quick Izzie farewell,” she says, “I also think that my last scene — where Meredith says to Izzie, ‘Don’t go, we’re your family,’ and Izzie’s response was, ‘No you’re not, you’re just a bunch of people I worked with, and I can find that anywhere’ — was kind of tragic and appropriate all at the same time. When I was playing the scene I was really trying to convey that, for Izzie, that was a lie that she had to tell herself to have the courage to move on.”

Question: I’m on my hands and knees begging for some True Blood news! —Nick
Ausiello:
The show is currently shooting episode 6, penned by executive producer Alan Ball. And guess what? It contains what Ball describes as an “intense” Sookie/Eric moment. “Let’s put it this way,” he adds, “I think people will have strong feelings about it.” In possibly related news, Ball told TV Guide that “Sookie is sexually drawn to [Eric] because she’s had his blood. But there is another reason he’s drawn to her, one that will be revealed this season.” READ FULL STORY »

'24' boss to fans: 'Be patient with Dana'

Categories: 24, Scoop

katee-sackhoffImage Credit: Kelsey McNeal/FoxNot since Elisha Cuthbert tangled with that cougar back in season 2 has a 24 story line been subject to such widespread ridicule as the current imbroglio involving Katee Sackhoff’s CTU analyst/mole, Dana Walsh. And rest assured, executive producer Howard Gordon — who’s currently overseeing production of the show’s series finale — is well aware of just how poorly the plot has been received. 'As the World Turns' sneak peek: Julianne Moore's April 5 return

Categories: Misc., Television

CBS announced today that Julianne Moore will return to As the World Turns on April 5. The news was first reported by EW.com. Moore’s appearance will be a walk-on; she’ll greet her character’s parents and wish them well.

The Oscar-nominated actress got her start on ATWT in 1985 by playing half-sisters Frannie and Sabrina Hughes – a depiction that earned her a Daytime Emmy in 1988, the year she left the show. ATWT will end its 54-year-run in September. Here’s a sneak peek of her reunion: READ FULL STORY »

'V' returns to ABC, earns mixed ratings

More bad news for the ailing sci-fi genre: The heavily hyped return of V only averaged 7.2 million viewers last night and was bested by a rerun of CBS’ The Good Wife (8.07 million), according to fast national ratings provided by ABC. The return of the serialized drama about an alien species did win its timeslot among the all-important adults 18-49 (2.9 rating/8 share) but that number is sure to drop when Julianna Margulies and Co. comes back with original Good Wife episodes next week. That was V’s lowest 18-49 rating for this season and it only retained 73 percent of its Lost lead-in, though the episode is likely to pick up a million or more viewers when the numbers come in for DVR playback.

Overall, ABC had a respectable showing on Tuesday. Thanks to the reality show powerhouse Dancing with the Stars and Lost, ABC averaged 10.4 million viewers last night — enough to earn second place behind Fox and the Death Star that is American Idol (21.3 million).

V was already facing an uphill battle by returning to the schedule after such a long hiatus. Before its three-month break, the show had lost 35 percent of its audience over just four airings last fall (14.3 million to 9.3 million). FlashForward faced similar difficulties when it returned to the schedule two weeks ago.

ABC did it’s best to tout the return of V, a redux of the 1984 series. The network aired multiple promos for the show during last month’s Oscars and risked the ire of Lost fans last night by running a countdown to the premiere in the corner of the screen. Both V and FlashForward have yet to receive second season pickups.

Kate Gosselin on her 'fight' with Tony Dovoloni: 'That was fear driven'

Categories: Reality TV, Television

kate-goselin-starsIn a heavily-edited segment Monday on Dancing with the Stars, Tony Dovoloni walked out on Kate Gosselin after she objected to the way he was teaching – a development that may have had an impact on votes going into tonight’s show. And yet the TLC star survived her first elimination! Afterwards, Gosselin talked to EW about the sour look on her face and whether she felt the fight segment was a fair representation of what really happened.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Talk about that look on your face throughout the entire hour.
KATE GOSSELIN
: Evidentally it was a horrifying look. Everyone is telling me about it. Next week I should smile during elimination. What?? Should I just stand there like this? (She displays huge grin).

Were you going to that dark place tonight? Did you convince yourself that you were in the bottom two?
KG
: Oh yeah! In the back, all the couples would come back and forth and we would say `Oh gosh, you are safe.’ As they would announce more, the group was getting smaller and then everyone starting looking at me going `I’m sorry.’  We all just wanted to throw up. It’s hard. Let’s be honest, my scores are low. I turned to Tony at one point and said `get ready.’

You had to know that ABC would milk your celebrity for all its worth and make you wait until the very end.
KG
: I knew that. I know how TV works … the ratings, the controversy, all that. (Dovoloni walks up and starts to faux grind against Gosselin. She ignores him). I so don’t …I tune it out, he’s a dancer. Anyway, I get how that works. At the same time, it could have very easily been me so I just have to say thank you to all the viewers who voted excessively because we so need the votes. I so don’t want this experience to end.
TONY DOVOLINI
: She represents the everyday person at home who watches our show and wonders what it would be like to be on it with all the insecurities,  the pressures, everything that goes with it.
KG
: I’m facing a humongous fear and I don’t want it to be over.

I think you are the reason the ratings are so great.
KG
: Well I don’t want to take credit for any of that. I know a lot of people, for whatever reason, care about what I’m doing, whether it’s good bad or indifferent in their eyes. At the same time every fan I do have who is voting for me, I have to say thank you to those who are keeping me here. It’s very heavily fan-based as far as votes go, but I can’t bank on that. I’ve got to do the work. I can’t just say `hey! I’ve got a lot of people who want to watch me make a fool of myself.’ I’ve got to do the work and I’ve got to conquer the fear. I’m all about working hard and throwing myself in. For whatever reason, I love this terror. Why? I don’t get it.

Did you watch last night’s show? Your argument?
TD
: No, I will not ever watch that. It’s one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. I called my dad today and I apologized to him.
KG
: And me, on the other hand, reality TV mama, I’m like, “Hey they caught it, they used it, I get all that.”
TD
: That’s Kate. For me, it’s different. I was raised differently.
KG
: Honestly the reason our TLC show did so well is I don’t have anything to hide. I’ve said it a million times, and once again this proves it. I’m sorry that situation happened and I don’t feel like it was as dramatic as it looked on screen — it was a five-minute ordeal. But at the same time, it shows the pressure behind us, the hard work, the urgency, the total fear. That was fear driven, that whole argument. It was, “Oh my gosh, I need to learn this, I need to learn it now because we have four days.” (She turns to Dovoloni) And, that’s how I’ll be tomorrow. Brace yourself.
TD
: I’m prepared for it.

Shannen Doherty on her 'DWTS' experience: 'Really scary'

Categories: On the Scene, Reality TV

shannon-doherty-starsDespite showing marked improvement from week to week, Shannen Doherty’s performance on Monday (not to mention her decent scores) weren’t enough to keep her on Dancing with the Stars. Fighting back tears, Doherty talked briefly to EW.com tonight about her struggle to feel at ease under the mirrored ball.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It must tough giving the interviews right now.
SHANNEN DOHERTY
: Yeah it’s pretty tough. There are definitely some emotions, some emotions of leaving my friends, and the emotion of letting him down (She gestures to her partner, Mark Ballas, and begins to cry).
MARK BALLAS
: You didn’t let me down, babe. You didn’t let me down.

This experience has clearly been emotional for you. As you were preparing for premiere week, did you ever consider quitting?
SD
: Yes, I thought about it a bunch of times. I’m not built for this, I’m not a dancer. It’s not what I do and it’s really uncomfortable for me. I’m a super private person, and I avoid the press and I avoid putting myself out there. That’s why I’m an actor. I never have to portray myself.  I can play every other person in the world but me, so doing this show has been really scary. As a result, it showed. You saw that I was incredibly uncomfortable for the most part. The only thing that was comfortable was walking into our rehearsal space at 10 a.m. and seeing Mark. We talked and really got to know each other. He’s like a brother to me.

But your scores definitely weren’t the lowest. How much do you attribute to your fans not showing enough support? You’ve always had a complicated relationship with fans.

SD: I don’t really think so. If you look at the bottom two — Pam Anderson and myself –  it’s almost like, did people think we were safe so there was no need to vote? You gotta wonder if that was the case. I have the most loyal fans in the world. They are amazing, they are the best, and they have always been there for me for 29 years. Maybe the people who aren’t fans, maybe it was black and white for them. But my fans, they love me.

'30 Rock' exclusive: Tina Fey snags Matt Damon

Categories: 30 Rock, Scoop

What Tina Fey wants, Tina Fey gets.

Back in December, we informed Matt Damon that he was at the top of Tina Fey’s 30 Rock guest star wish list. His response? “I would do [30 Rock] in a heartbeat if they asked me to come on,” enthused the genuinely shocked thesp. “She should call my people — or even better me. Or I could call her. Let’s make this happen.”

Cut to March 31 and voila: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Matt Damon is going to guest star on 30 Rock! READ FULL STORY »

'Smallville' exclusive: Someone is going to [major spoiler alert]!

Categories: Scoop, Smallville

smallvilleSmallville‘s ninth season finale will feature a cameo by one of TV’s most feared guest stars: The Grim Reaper. Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers of the everlasting superhero saga are planning to kill off a major castmember in the May 14 capper. And if the death of “Jimmy Olsen” last May taught us anything, it’s that no one — and I mean no one — is safe on Smallville. Okay, Clark is safe. But everyone else is fair game. A few characters are particularly vulnerable, which is my roundabout way of me saying the victim is listed after the jump! READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe': producers promise more from the parallel universe...and Leonard Nimoy

Categories: Television

fringe-castImage Credit: Justin Stephens/FoxIn anticipation of Fringe‘s return on Thursday, EW spoke with executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman about revisiting that crazy parallel universe, the (romantic?) relationship between Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv), and whether we’ll see more of Leonard Nimoy’s Dr. William Bell this season.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When we talked to you at the beginning of the year, we assumed that the show would be spending more time in the parallel universe. But you didn’t really go there earlier in the season. Did you pull back on that plan?
JEFF PINKNER:
Before the season started, we sat down and did our version of a mini-camp and laid out the season. We knew the tentpoles we were shooting for. We didn’t know how we would get there. We’ve stayed shockingly and surprisingly true to that. I think we always knew this season, Olivia would come back from the alternative universe armed with information and that we, the audience, wouldn’t spend too much time over there until the back half of the season. We’re sticking to that plan.

Remind us where you left it with Olivia and Peter.
JP:
At the end of the last episode, our mid-winter break — it was so arbitrary! — Olivia, to her surprise, discovered what the audience has known for a long time: that Peter came from the other side. When we come back, as we’ve always said, we want to use backstory to drive front-story and consequences rather than to plug mystery just for mystery — not that that’s a bad thing and we’ll do that too! In this instance, when we come back, we’ll sort of reveal the entirety of that story and how it came to pass. We’ll let that drive our storytelling for the rest of the season. READ FULL STORY »

'Lost' finale: a 30-second ad will cost around $900,000

Categories: Deals, Lost, Television, TV Biz

For a show that isn’t exactly raking in record viewership levels during its final season, Lost still has the potential to generate some serious coin for ABC. According to a report in Advertising Age, the network is looking to charge around $900,000 for a 30-second commercial spot during the drama’s May 23 finale. That’s a far cry from what the alphabet net was collecting at last year’s upfront presentation in New York, when ad spots during Lost were selling for a then-bargain price of roughly $213,000, according to the trade publication.

Rich ad rates are usually limited to those shows that generate the greatest number of viewers, especially in the adults 18-49 demographic. So far this season, Lost is only averaging 12.02 million. Granted, that’s up from last year’s 11.2 million but down significantly from the 15 million-plus fans who tuned into the show from 2004-2006. Still, some advertisers are far more interested in the level of fan devotion rather than the sheer number of devotees who tune into a show. “There are many advertisers willing to pay a reasonable premium for inventory in programs that generate such a highly passionate and rabid fan base,” Kris Magel, exec VP-director, national broadcast at Interpublic Group of Cos.’ Initiative, told Advertising Age. “There is definitely value in that.”

Series finales can certainly boost network coffers. A 30-second spot in the 2005 finale for Everybody Loves Raymond, for example, went for about $1.3 million while adds in the 2004 series finale of Friends cost between $1.5 million and $2.3 million.
