Exclusive: 'True Blood' star defects to 'Good Wife'

carrie-prestonImage Credit: Suan Alexander/PR PhotosI hope this doesn’t mean what I think it means.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Carrie Preston — a.k.a. True Blood‘s Arlene — is heading to CBS’ The Good Wife for a multi-episode arc. She’ll play Elsbeth Mann (not a typo), a member of Peter’s (Chris Noth) legal team.

The timing of Preston’s casting is sure to raise questions about the fate of her True Blood character, particularly since the HBO smash is in the midst of shooting its third season in Los Angeles. The Good Wife, meanwhile, is based in New York.

Although an HBO rep declined to comment, a TB insider cautions against declaring the vamp-hating serial bride dead and buried. “Arlene isn’t a major presence in the third book,” notes the source. “A lot of the action takes place outside of Bon Temps, so [Carrie] probably had some free time on her hands.”

I like that theory better. Besides, Alan Ball wouldn’t dare kill off Merlotte’s only dependable waitress. In other True news, did you hear? Season 3 premieres Sunday, June 13! Viewing party at my someone else’s place!

Didn’t like her character much anyway.

BOO Jack M! I hated her in the books, and by saying “I hated her in the books” I’m saying I loved her character. But Aus, to say she didn’t play a role in book 3 doesn’t mean anything. Tara played absolutely no role in book 1, but she was close to main storyline.

      • Julie

Tara plays no significant role in the novels period…neither does Lafayette…Jessica…and Eric isn’t an emasculated sod…and Bill is a devious control freak… Ball has proven again and again he’s not REALLY following the books. So who knows what this all means for the character of Arlene. Looking forward to June 13th!!! :)

Seriously, I think it’s not a personal affront to her character. I do believe as we move further through the books a lot of the peripheral characters will move by the wayside as we move closer to what is the actual storyline. I think since (unline Twilight as a lot of crazies like to point out) this story is still growing, and Alan Ball is a fan, he’s going to move them along as possible with the book series, and Arlene’s still there, and as far as i’m concerned, waaay important. I don’t see her going anywhere.

I hope they just write her off the show for a little while. I love Arlene.

  • M

I really, really hope they didn’t kill off Arlene. Either way, I adore Carrie Preston and it’s great that she’s getting work.

Relax dude, Arlene has got more story, she’s a great wrinkle, I honestly don’t think the TB team would kill her off so soon. By the way Chris Baeur (Andy) has guested on TGW too.

  • spygrl

I think if you read the books you would understand why she has some time off… but she comes back with a vengeance in a bit.

  • Stacy

I would be so devastated if Arlene died! Her and Terry are so cute and her poor kids! Their Daddy is on a vacation with Jesus!

    • Michelle

That just made me spit out my Cheerios!

    • Rhiannon

Actually, their daddy is not on a vacation with Jesus, Rene is and he’s not their daddy…just clarifying… :D

  • Zoe

Nah, doubt she’s off TB for good. Shooting TB can’t take up too much of her time each year; it only makes sense she would commit to another show as well. For another comparision, although Alison Brie is a regular on “Community,” I haven’t heard anything of her being written out of her occasional appearances on “Mad Men.” I bet Carrie Preston has a similar arrangement.

Gotta keep her, other waitresses just don’t show up. Characters need to drink, though.

  • Celia

Her character is annoying in the books, so I can deal.

  • Ross Bonaime

I’ve always hoped she would make an appearance on Lost sometime this season since Michael Emerson (Ben) is her husband. I just want to see them together cause they are always pretty cute at award shows together.

    • Shane

She’s already appeared on Lost. She played the role of young-Ben’s mother in a season 3 episode.

      • Mike

In Ross’s defense, he said he hoped she’d appear on LOST “this season” lol But yes, she certainly has been on it before.

    • bondfool

Maybe he could sub for her on True Blood.

    • Jeff

Ross also said “see them together” which has never happenend on LOST. Her scenes were when Ben was born and when young Ben saw his mother.

  • Craig

I wouldn’t be too upset if she was killed off. I liked Arlene in season one when she was with Rene, but I found her more than a little annoying in season two.

  • Mandy

Because of my financial situation (aka unemployed) I had to give up my cable (well, I still have basic) and I’m sick sick sick that I’m going to be missing True Blood!!! I wonder if I’ll be able to watch it online?????

    • single mom

Mandy, do what I do – netflix or save the pennies and buy the DVDs.

    • Robin

I’ve gotten other shows on hulu.com try that.

  • Betsy

I wouldn’t rely too much on what happens in the books to gauge whats going to happen this season. In the books Tara is white and not a main character, Lafayette is dead and Jessica doesn’t exist sooooo….

  • Meg

I couldn’t kill her off if they are trying to stick with the book since Arlene is still around in book 9. I’m excited they have an official air date but I wish they would do more than just 12 eps for each season since they make us wait almost another yr for the next one.

  • Joan

Another attractive person on Peter’s team. Oh My!!

Are we looking at the same headshot?
