'24' casting call: Another sign the Fox show is history?

Fox has yet to officially announce whether 24 will end its eight-season run this May but clues continue to pop up that suggest otherwise. Here’s the latest: a casting call for the role of a U.N. secretary general on 24 went out to talent agencies this week and included an advisory: “These are the final episodes, so if some of your name people would like to do something on the show, this is the time for them to do it.” Say it ain’t so, Jack!

Unlike Fox shows like Fringe, Glee and Bones, 24 has yet to receive a pickup for the 2010-11 season. So far this year, the drama is down 10 percent in viewers (11.7 million versus 12.9 million last year).

Stick a fork in this show, it’s over.

    • EF

I agree. As much as I’d hate to see it go, 24 has reached it’s prime.

      • TK

I don’t agree!!! It could be that I finally decided to watch it for the first time this season and now I am hooked! NO, I don’t agree it is done, it still has some “pink” left in it…….but have heard NBC is interested so maybe………:)~~

What I don’t understand is that if you take out American Idol, according to the ratings, 24 is one of the top shows for Fox. Even if their viewership is going down, it’s still in or near the top 25 shows each week.

      • Matt

The real problem is that the show is also one of the most expensive to produce on the air right now. The network may have trouble justifying the huge expense for a show whose ratings are slipping.

      • Lucas

        the numbers aren’t the issue.
Studios make a show for X amount and that determines how much they charge to a network to air the show. that airing cost then determines how much the networks charge for ad time. the higher the amount, the higher the rating they have to promise the show will get. a show can be the top rated every week for all nets but if it doesn’t hit that promise, it’s toast.
the trouble lies in part due to the ratings being sample based. the sample comes from the Census and is 10 years out of date. plus it is hella small. something like only 25k households out of millions in the gen pop. things like hulu, itunes, amazon aren’t considered in that budget recovery so they mean nada.
if the networks would embrace the new and growing world of online and demand better numbers from the ratings, perhaps the tv landscape would be different.

Aren’t double digit ratings in this time…excelent? I mean, 24 does better than many other shows currently on the air…

    • answer

The problem is that 24 costs significantly more money to make than those other shows. So those ratings–double-digit though they may be–probably aren’t worth the price tag.

    • Jeremy W.

answer is…well, the answer. American Idol pulls in over twice the ratings of 24 and probably costs less than half the money to produce.

  • terry

I,m torn. I’ll miss the show, but I’d rather it end before it has a truly terrible seaon(though even the worst seasons have been entertaining)

    • Richard

This hasn’t been a terrible season?

      • Christian

Honestly no. Some of the Renee stuff was weak, and the Dana subplot has been beyond annoying, but everything Jack has done has been pretty enjoyable (especially the Die Hard homage). Nowhere close to as bad as Season 6 (which had one good episode and the nuke). Not as fun as Season 5, obviously, but frankly not much worse than Season 7.

    We’re running out of time!

I know ratings are down, and people are saying it’s expensive to produce, but this show does well in the overseas market and sells tons of DVDs. I can’t buy a financial reason for ending it…it does better than Fringe, for God’s sake.

    • tra

Of course it’s financial! Overseas sales and DVD sales are a drop in bucket compared to American ratings. You obviously don’t know much about the TV business.

  • Ron

Wouldn’t the final episodes of this season have been shot already?

    • KWise

That’s what I thought!!! We’re only a few weeks away from May sweeps as it is – I’m pretty sure they’re all shot by now, right? (unless this message to talent agents is old…)

      • brian

Most shows have not filmed their final episodes of the season by now.

    • RK

Remember they got delayed a few weeks ago when Kiefer got sick? Poison gas or nerve toxin, I think.

      • t3hdow

Keifer was sent to the hospital after a cyst ruptured in his body, and he needed surgery to get it fixed.

  • Generation Gossip

This show is long past it’s prime, they should bow out gracefully.

Every day something comes out speculating one way or another. FOX needs to make it official already. I hope it sticks around….it is still better than most of the series left.

  • Landman11

It’s not like Fox has a boatload of programs that get 12 million viewers – not really sure why they would throw that away.

  • MSR

I haven’t watched 24 since season 6. I know people who still enjoy it, so if it’s of the same quality it was then, Fox shouldn’t have trouble making the decision as to whether to renew it.

  • diane

for the love of god just make a decision!

Ron – they are getting ready to shoot the final episodes

  • woot

The show is still getting 11 million + viewers. Far more than Glee and i believe Fringe and Bones (but don’t quote me on the last 2). So why would they not renew it? I guess its probably an expensive show, but it is still really popular.

    • Jeff

It is more than Glee and Fringe (Bones does big numbers), but after eight seasons with ratings trending downward and people looking for something new and fresh, this might be the time to pull the plug. Plus, as stated earlier, 24 does cost big bucks to produce…

  • ed

If these are indeed the final episodes, then bring back Tony Almeda, Aaron Pierce, Mandy and Charles Logan. These four are the only good characters left in the show (besides Jack) that are actually still alive.

    • Christian

Logan is coming back, it’s why the actor bowed out of the Mentalist.

  • Jim

Count me in. How 11+ million voters is a bad thing is beyond me. Yes we get it’s expensive, heck put them on a budget. And it’s not like Fox has a great track record on this. They’re basically canceling a show that has numbers most of their other shows dream of getting. Dumb.

    • Alan

Really? 8 seasons is a healthy run for a show. Many if not most successful shows (not counting Law&Order) have ended after around 7-9 seasons. I think 24 is looking tired and old and boring and as much as I have loved it in the past, stick a fork in this one, it’s done!

  • Ryan Whiting

Umm… Since when do the casting directors know things that the existing crew wouldn’t? Anyway, do you think FOX, as tight-lipped as it naturally is, is going to let a slip like this fly? I dunno, but I’m not going to read too much into this press release.
