John Barrowman is right. Dont mess with a good thing when you have it. John is Capt Jack
I don’t know how an American version of Torchwood would play anyway. I wish they would just finally do a British Series 4 and quit messing around.
As to Captain Jack he’s not Jack Harkness if he won’t nail anything that moves – male, female, or otherwise. Straightifying him would suuuuuck.
I only began watching Torchwood recently and I’m only into the 2nd season and I really love it. I can’t imagine it with Capt. Jack exactly as he is. I had no idea FOX was considering a US version. I would definitely watch it if Barrowman was back.
They ruined Jack when they made him responsible for Ianto’s very unnecessary death. Jack’s stupidity killed Ianto.
The only reason to get rid of Ianto was 1) so they can de-gay Jack for an American mainstream version or 2) so that he’s free to shag anything that moves.
*That* dosn’t make Jack a groundbreaking character in terms of being gay or bi or even a omnisexual hero. *That* only makes him a sex addict like many, many other bothering characters.
They had the chance to make something beautiful by making him care and love the one who really loved him: yep, Ianto.
They threw everything out of the window. FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET!
So Jack would be a “sex addict” if he had other partners after Ianto? He’s immortal, so, so there are going to be many. He loved his wife too, probably. (Or wives, and Estelle, and who knows who else he’ll love in the future?)
Plus, he’s been a serial monogamist as far as we’ve seen. He’s a charming flirt but he seems to have one partner at a time.
Yep, he would be. Unless they set TW in a decent amount of time into the future. But from what we already saw, Jack replaced his lover after 1 min. and 25 secs. Great.
And don’t tell me that the reason they killed off like an old prop a great character like Ianto, who was interesting in his own and not only as the undignified role of Jack’s piece of tart on the side, wasn’t that they had to make Jack straight for the American market or a sex addict who kills his partner and moves on to the next one.
I agree with you Kat. But the most important is Jack need man to shag. Sorry for Mr Barrowman but I think your hero is not anymore a hero.
All due respect, Kat, but where are you getting your facts?
As far as we know from canon, Jack met Alonso in The End of Time more than six months after the events of CoE, and given the nature of time travel, it could have been longer.
First of all Jack cannot do time travel as his wristband doesn’t work, remember? And if that scene were set into the future Alonzo would be older than what he looked like in the Titanic episode.
Second, of course it’s six months later but God forbid they showed us a hint of character development by actually showing us Jack grieving for the lover, and the grandson, he’s lost. No, he cannot grieve or even think of them not even for 1 episode!
Do I need to remind you that Jack caused Ianto’s death and that he actively killed Stephen? Not even a moment of remorse must be wasted onscreen?
Of course not. So let him replace Ianto ASAP, even before the proper season of TW even begins, after all he only has eternity to live, he can’t afford wasting any time.
I saw The End of Time, set at least 6 months after COE (and the wriststrap may not work for time jumps, but there may be other time machines because 6 months wouldn’t even get you our of our solar system) and it certainly looked to me like he was grieving. And, keeping in mind the radio play “Dead Line”, I’m damn sure he was.
I think something you are all forgetting is Jack’s origins. He may be immortal, but he is also from what will be the 51st Century. In the time when he was raise there was no concept of straight, gay, or bi. Even interspecies would be acceptable. Jack’s sexuality is also spiked by a higher level of pherimones which otehr people, especially people from our century whose are not as strong, react very strongly too. Remember, when the Doctor told him to stop flirting and he said he was just saying hello. The Doctor retorted with “For you, hello is flirting”. For Jack, it is about the experience and the immotional connection. He knows he will never be normal, but the emotional connections help him to try and feel normal.
ABSURD! Why mess with something that already works and works well?
Well coming from the studio (BBC) that in effect de-gayed the last pairing (Jack/Ianto ). I’d worry that Jack will get any at all.
I won’t watch if Jack’s not his usual fun-loving (okay, roof-brooding) omnisexual self!
Will & Grace proved that US audiences are totally fine with gay characters.
And I agree with Zandra. Jack IS Torchwood. Having Eve Myles as Gwen in the new version would be great, too.
BRAVO I’m with you V Torrez
I saw Barrowman at the nude beach in Toronto last summer. Trust me, after that sighting, I’d watch him in anything…
Why even make an American version? I want BBC to handle it. Three episodes and it’ll be cancelled
Theoretically, FOX could spend more money on it and the FX would be better.
In a New York minute he’ll be straight.
The show would be a nerd disaster of on-par with the cancellation of Firefly if they de-sexualized Captian Jack.
“The show would be a nerd disaster of on-par with the cancellation of Firefly if they de-sexualized Captian Jack.”
Heh, considering RTD already made the UK version a disaster like that with Children of Earth it should surprise no one of he does it all over again on FOX.
They definetely shouldn’t, I always thought even though there was flirting and neither would turn down the possibility, that the kid of big brother type way that Jack treating Gwen was the most authentic relationship on the show and it had something to do with Gwen knowing that about him. I kind of think though, that what would be funny, is that if all the characters are going to be American, Jack should be British or Austrailan or South African or something.
If you’re going to mess with the character, why bother? Leave Jack alone. He’s perfect the way he is.
Wow, so not only they kill Ianto (the man Jack love so much) but Jack need a replacement right now of course. hum… probably Alonso.
Kill one character for nothing and replace it sooner. Great writting!
Here’s hoping they do opt for an American Torchwood – AND that it is NOT tampered with. Bring back the only Capt Jack there is, the Barrowman. This isn’t like Dr Who, where that character is intentionally changed. Capt Jack is different, and likeable precisely because he is so omni-sexual. You go, John B!!!!
