Rosie O'Donnell staging a comeback to daytime TV

Filed under: News, Television and tagged: ,

Rosie O’Donnell has teamed with syndication vets Dick Robertson and Scott Carlin to develop another daytime talk show, according to the Hollywood Reporter. With The Oprah Winfrey Show preparing to sunset next year, O’Donnell is hoping to launch a new yakker that could conceivably fill the bill in the fall of 2011.

The show will be produced independently by a company that O’Donnell has formed with Robertson and Carlin, two executives which distributed The Rosie O’Donnell Show while working for Warner Bros. Domestic TV. It’s hard to say whether the trio will secure the daytime time slot that Winfrey holds; some of the top ABC stations have already indicated that they plan to run local news programs.

Meanwhile, the NBC owned-and-operated stations recently closed a new deal with Ellen DeGeneres to keep her talk show in daytime through 2014. The deal prevents the ABC-owned stations from attempting to steal DeGeneres away as a replacement for Oprah Winfrey once the latter host goes off the air in September 2011. DeGeneres’ previous deal was set to expire at the same time as Winfrey’s, so there was some thought that Warner Bros. could have incited a bidding war between NBC and ABC.

Interesting. Rosie’s talk show was one of the best around.

    • Joe

Indeed! Aww i miss the days of nice Rosie.

    • Rufus

Seriously? I think it was the best day in TV when she went off the air!!

    • THX

      OH GOD NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • googliezoo

I loved her talk show when she was the Queen of nice. She was a lot of fun and funny. However, even though I agree with her politically and on social issues most of the time I find her kind of obnoxious when she starts spouting her views. She doesn’t know how to disagree without being disagreeable. I hope her new show isn’t a political opinion show and is more of a celebration of the entertainment industry like her old show.

I agree !! When Rosie was on the View we saw his underbelly and pent-up temper. Ever since he bought a few kids and got himself a “wife” he hasn’t been the same.

  • graeme

Although I still can’t believe they cancelled Bonnie Hunt. She should be Oprah’s replacement.

    • Buzz

I agree , she’s super. I was so surprised that she didn’t an Emmy the first year , but then I read that they have trouble getting the show sold across the country at the same levels as Oprah , Ellen or Rosie when they first started in syndication.
I wonder if she might have done better if she ha d done the show in New York instead of LA … In any case Bonnie’s a winner any way you cut it…what a breath of fresh air ( ironic, since she films her show in smoggy LA) ;) !!

      • bg

I cant believe they canceled Bonny and are putting Rosie back on the air.Bonny has class rosie cant spell it.

    • JustMe

oh no!! I don’t get a chance to watch Bonnie Hunt MUCH but when I do I adore her and her sense of humor. She’s a breath of fresh air!

      • gigi

Same here! Bonnie Hunt is a funny lady. Hopefully she’ll be able to do more movies or a series again. Love her!

  • UGH

Say what you will but Rosie stands a chance of outperforming that hack Ellen Degeneres when Oprah leaves.

    • will

according to the Bible God hates divorcees too…see what I did there…you can’t just pick and choose what God likes…

    • Madox

True, but I love them and God is a fairly tale, so I win!

    • Katj

      Please don’t speake for God.
How do you know what he thinks?

      • God

everybody just says what they feel, and attribute it to me after the fact. Truth be told, I’m getting a little annoyed for being the fall guy for people’s myopic xenophobic, racist hate mongering. But whatever; a meteor is going to destroy this planet in a couple of years – I’ve got bigger fish to fry.

    • Nshi

I loves me a lesbo fight to the death!

  • Alice

Please, not her’s another again, she’s a traitor and has a big stupid mouth. I won’t watch her. She another idoit celebrity. I boycot all traitors including her

    • sandy

how is she a traitor? she spends her free time helping foster kids in the AMERICAN system.

    • RyRyNYC

Way to go with mastering the art of cohesion there, Alice…

  • Buzz

    yawning at superficial insults

    • GROWING PAINS FAN

Agree, immature – however she already had her shot – I vote for Tracey Gold to have a daytime talkshow, also Bonnie Hunt should keep hers and bring back Caroline Rhea.

    • Gary

I agree, she had her chance, let it go. Why can’t stars just be happy being themselves instead of constantly trying a new show, or whatever? It’s pathetic.

    • hatedon

Growing Pains has been cancelled. Get over it.

  • K

Rosie isn’t bad. Her radio talk show is interesting and has in my opinion redeemed her shaky past.

I think the Ellen show is a joke. I find it too lame to watch.

    • Buzz

it’s heavy on fawning and overt promotion …she needs to switch up the format on a regular basis, cause fresh it ain’t… imho

  • PatiJ

I hope it is true. I loved watching the View when she was on it; it just isn’t the same without her–mostly inane stuff of fashion, fluff, etc. Whoopi is okay, but doesn’t have the edge that Rosie had to keep it vibrant. I also like Ellen except for the goofy play moments. It makes no difference at all what ones sexuality is, nor race. I am white, heterosexual, educated, and don’t give a whit if someone else is none of that. Rosie and Ellen are entertaining, and deserve the accolades given to them.

    • sandy

Nice comments patiJ, I completely agree with everything u said. For me, after Rosie left, the View just became unbearable to watch.

      • RyRyNYC

        DITTO.

  • Generation Gossip

This makes me so happy!!! I can’t wait for Rosie’s triumphant return to daytime

  • M Spen

Go away Rosie and take Kristie Alley with you!

  • hoganbcmj

I personally would embrace the return of nice, not-wigged-out and political Rosie. Her original talk show was fun, though I do think Ellen sort of fills that void now. Rosie has gotten a bit too big for her britches over the past few years, but I still hope she has a chance for a come-back. Nice-Rosie, please!

    • John

      Literally!

  • Bt3

Don’t watch Oprah. Ellen’s show got boring two years ago. I’ll happily watch Rosie:)

  • KevinG

Time for her to sail into the sunset.

  • Juniemoon

I for one can’t wait. Rosie will be new and refreshing….hey, you haters, it’s time for love !!!!

  • Maureen

Rosie’s talk show back in the day was the ISH! Hope this can happen! :)

  • Hobo

OMG! Rosie trying again! She just can’t figure it out can she? Most Americans hate her with a passion. I guess there just isn’t much real work for a loud, obnoxious, opinionated woman except for maybe speaker of the house!

    • Rufus

      WELL SAID!!!

      • teresa

Wow. Many haters of women out here. I guess you all wish women were wearing burka’s, not able to leave the house without a male escort, not being educated or getting basic health care. There’s a great article on the conditions of women in Afghanistan on the web today. Why don’t you women haters read it and then decide if that’s the way you want women in America (or anywhere) to be treated. because that’s the way the Taliban does it. It’s actually okay for women to be opinionated, educated, passionate, loud and even obnoxious. That’s the way we do it here in America. Or have you forgotten?

      • Talia

What in God’s name does disliking he uncouth, unfunny, arrogant Rosie O’Donnell have to do with supporting the Taliban’s oppression of women? Boy, not even Rosie’s lycra yoga pants stretch things that far.

    • sandy

Are u kidding me? The ratings went through the roof while she was on the View. If America hated her so much, why were they watching? FYI: America does like her.
