'Big Bang' scoop: Sheldon's perfect match is... Blossom!

big-bang-jim-loveImage Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBS; Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic.comIt’s a match made in TV geek heaven: The Big Bang Theory has tapped erstwhile Blossom star Mayim Bialik to guest star (and possibly recur) as a potential love interest for Sheldon.

As I first teased in this week’s Ask Ausiello, Bialik’s character, Victoria, gets paired with Sheldon on an eHarmony-type matchmaking service — and with good reason. She’s described as the female version of Jim Parson’s theoretical physicist.

Bialik, who has a recurring role as the high school guidance counselor on The Secret Life of the American teenager, will appear in Big Bang‘s May 24 season finale and could return next season in a recurring capacity.

The casting comes amid a flurry of female activity for Sheldon. As I reported earlier this week, Judy Greer will “spend the night” with him in early May.

Thoughts? Kind of fitting that Sheldon’s first potential love interest would be Blossom, no? And is this proof that exec producer Chuck Lorre has reconsidered creating a third gender for him? Sound off below!

As a love interest? I have a slight problem with it. To me, Sheldon having a love interest makes no sense to me. I really hope it’s not romantic perfect match but just person.

    • krak

      WHOA!

      • GROWING PAINS FAN

Tracey Gold would have been a better choice

      • veronica

        touche

      • JenR

My favorite part of that spam message is the PPPPPPPP at the end. I imagine the spammer is blowing raspberries.

    • Kat

Sheldon has no interest in the opposite sex. Or anything to do with sex. DO NOT RUIN MY SHOW! Just because some Johnny come latelys think he needs a love interest.

      • Johnification

You don’t think the character should grow or change, and simply remain exactly the same for the entire run of the show?

      • GROWING PAINS FAN

The guy who plays sheldon is 37, if he has not shown interest now, I doubt his character would start now

      • WhoMe

Maybe this will make his character less annoying… no one needs a rehash of the urkel disaster

      • bijoubarbour

The guy who plays sheldon is 37, if he has not shown interest now, I doubt his character would start now…..What does the Actor’s age have to do with anything????? Sheldon is a human, even if he doesn’t wan to be….It’s perfectly natural for him to have interactions with the opposite sex, and I am sure it will be really funny….which is what we want right???

      • Jennifer

Please…what is perfectly natural is for humans to display a wide range of sexuality….including asexual. Just because he is human does not mean he must have sexual interests. He will have interactions for sure, however interactions are not always sexual in nature.
What might be funny/interesting is watching another person navigate Sheldon’s sexuality/where he stands on the spectrum of sexuality.

    • Lilly

I love the idea of a love interest for Sheldon. It could open a whole new kind of funny for his character as this will be uncharted territory for him.

      • They’re not rehashing Urkel . . .

        So much as Felix Unger

      • George

Where did the Felix Unger reference come from???? Felix was married had children, had a girlfriend for a long period of time on the show (and dated other women as well)… Felix was a little neurotic yes, but Sheldon, NO! (or for you Odd Couple fans Sheldn, there’s no “O”)

    • ana

Sheldon is so much better WITHOUT a romantic interest! NO NO NO RO!

  • Chels725

I’m still holding out hope for Sheldon & Penny.

    • Blake

      THIS

      • WhoMe

is “THIS” what people say now-a-days…almost as worse as FAIL or EPIC

      • Lisa

Sheldon and Penny would be the best match, IMO, but I don’t trust the writers to realize that. I like the Tracey Gold idea, though. Far better than Blossom.

      • brody

        As worse as?

    • Lindsey

      Yuck.

    • Nose

What is wrong with you? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

    • Douglas

      Sheldon & Penny FTW!

  • Joel

It’s funny, but I’ve been convinced that Sheldon shouldn’t have a love interest, but this scoop just made me do a 180. I can just see these two together.

I’m excited to see how it works in the season finale. We’ll see after that whether it should continue.

  • mario

there’s no “J” in her last name

  • Lau

Oh well that would help viewers to realize he’s not asexual but what about PENNY? Writers, hello? She’s the perfect match. What’s the point giving him the same person he is?

    • Semaphore

This girl will be a stepping stone to Penny. First he has to discover what goes where.

      • teh

First he has to discover what goes where. <- I really laughed at this

      • Carmen

I was thinking the same thing. Let him work up to Penny over the next several years.

  • Luminosity

I think it would be pretty funny if she was chasing after him and he was clueless about it. BTW, great casting.

    • Blake

But they’ve already done that plot (more than once).

      • stacymac

I AGREE….I remember an episode like that. The girl was crushing on him and would do anything he’d ask. Of course, he was clueless at first until the guys explained it for him. Weird, I forget how it ended though b/c it didn’t last. This time around, I think Sheldon does “notice her” only b/c they share things in common. Obviously, if she’s a female version of him. But if their egos are identical, then there has to be some battling going on. Personally, I like to see characters grow and change. But hey, I like Sheldon the way he is, it’s what makes the show so funny. If he is who he is and CANNOT change (permanently), then so be it. The Execs/Writers give different story lines a try, but if works the original way, then why change it? Dr. Sheldon Cooper will still be hilarious to watch no matter what! ;-)

    • googliezoo

My sister I sometimes catch Secret Life to snark on the abysmal acting and painful dialog and she’s awful on that show. I liked her on Blossom back in the day. Maybe she’s forgotten how to act? Either that or anyone affilliated with that piece of crap show automatically sucks. I think Molly Ringwald used to know how to act as well. Oh well, what does one expect from the creator of 7th Heaven.

      • brody

There are plenty of half-decent actors who are somehow spectacularly horrible when they’re on that show. I think it’s cursed or something.

      • bootsycolumbia

True! I finally watched that show for the first time last week, and my jaw kept dropping at how bad the acting was (not to mention the stilted, phony dialogue). 7th Heaven, as bad as it was, was way better than Secret Life.

  • Melanie

I don’t think Sheldon would EVER date Penny, and vice versa. It just doesn’t seem…. possible. AT ALL.

    • Anthoy

I don’t get why people think Sheldon and Penny are a perfect match. They are great comic foils and it should stay that way.

      • Melinda65

I agree. She seems protective of him in a sisterly way, but I don’t see any romantic chemistry at all.

      • Kaybar

Man, I’m glad someone else said this. I was starting to think I was the only one to see how weird Sheldon/Penny would be.

    • Josie

I don’t even buy Penny’s attraction to Leonard–it’s utterly inorganic. So Penny with Sheldon? The show would not last long after that, at all. I think the most the writers will do is toy with the audience around that idea without ever having it manifest.
They’ll have to be careful, cos changing Sheldon’s character in any way is like a bris; one slip in the wrong direction and you can’t fix what’s been destroyed.

      • Lisa

That’s actually what I am hoping for — toying around with the audience about Sheldon and Penny, but I would like to see it manifest when the series is finally coming to an end.

  • VonD

Sheldon is asexual … how the hell he will hung up with some female version of him … it’s just doesn’t sound as Sheldon Cooper!

    • Semaphore

He’s not asexual, he’s just very immature emotionally.

  • Tyre

Now, since she has her PhD, shouldn’t it be Dr. Mayim Bialik?

  • ‘kay see

I was hoping Sheldon would be confounded by his own attraction to someone with a personality like his own mother/meemaw’s

  • javi

im with melanie penny is too hot for sheldon give sheldon a girl who likes the comics he likes the same taste as sheldon but dosen’t like sheldon’s fave super hero and not a fan of stan lee that would make a fanboy nuts.

  • fangirl

    no no no!!!!

  • Anna

I hated the thought of Sheldon getting a love interest but Blossom is awesome! I’m so torn but as long as they never pair up Sheldon and Penny I’m ok with Sheldon having a girlfriend (he can still be asexual, I read there are different kind of asexuals?)

  • Heather

    I don’t like the idea.

but I am willing to give it a chance.

    • Semaphore

That’s also Sheldon’s attitude towards sex.

      • brody

        Heh.

    • chim4

and as he mentioned once If I’m happy I’d rather put : with D , but yall so so so .. INCONSIDERATE :D

  • Lisa

I think Sheldon is just too emotionally stunted to really process a romantic attachment. It’s out of character.

Also, the Sheldon/Penny thing is kind of creepy. Leonard and Penny are just too cute together.

    • Tarc

I’m in total agreement there. Sheldon is a person apart – he’s like the Commander Data of the show – the character that stands apart and can reflect back our behavior in revealing ways. And while I can’t say that it is impossible for this to work (and Bialyk *is* very talented), I have grave doubts about this idea.

      • Tarc

Oh, and the Sheldon-Penny relationship works because they are personality and comedic foils. It’s their opposition that makes it work – and that’s not the basis of a convincing or practical relationship. Penny and Sheldon will never work romantically, but comedically, they are genius.

    • tex

character growth, ever heard of it?

    • Alana

Sure, sex sex sex and no sign of a sincere love at all is “cute”. Good god.
