Exclusive: Jon Heder drops out of Comedy Central sitcom

Tags: , News, Scoop

jon-hederImage Credit: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage.comThis is hardly dynamite news for Comedy Central: Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) has abruptly dropped out of the Will Ferrell-produced sitcom he was set to star in for the cable net.

Heder’s camp released the following statement exclusively to EW.com confirming the news: “Comedy Central, Gary Sanchez Productions and Jon Heder have mutually decided to part ways over creative differences with the character. Jon wishes the show nothing but success, and is very grateful for the opportunity.”

The untitled series, which centers on a young man (Heder) who moves back in with his parents, co-stars Saturday Night Live‘s Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz. Production was scheduled to get underway later this week, but that’s likely to be pushed back as Comedy Central searches for a new leading man.

Nice to know that Jon Heder has so much going on with his career that he can turn down a cable sitcom. Oh wait…

    • Ian

Nice to know that Nicole has so much going on with her life and can still read articles just to post negative comments on them…..oh wait.

Heder on the other hand is filming a movie, has another one in pre-production, and 3 others in development. How many does Nicole have??? Dumbass.

      • Tricia

Nice to know there are still funny people like Ian to lighten the mood :-P

      • Nicole

I’m sure they will all be Oscar winners, Ian. Keep stanning.

      • Je$ter

Steady employment isn’t a bad thing Nicole even if it isn’t oscar worthy roles.

      • IanNeedsHelp

Why all the hate for Nicole; I was thinking the same thing as her about Heder. Do you work for him or something? Do you get off on calling people you don’t even know names? From you post, my guess is you have to resort to name calling because you have low self esteem, low intelligence and small assets.

      • Nicole

u go to heck ian. hows being pres of the heder fan club?

      • MN

        Shaddup Ian.

      • Matt

I have to agree with Ian…if Nicole isn’t going to do the research to see what Jon Heder has actually been up to before she makes such a comment, then I commend Ian for standing up and calling her out…Yay Ian.

    • Ian

I don’t have to even be a Heder fan (i’m not really) to be able to do a 3 second search of IMDB. It lists all his films that are on the way, filming, in pre-production, and in development. And I certainly don’t need to have low self-esteem to point out the stupidity of Nicle clicking the article, reading it, and then posting negatively about someone she obviously dislikes. And to “IanNeedsHelp”, do you need me to point out the irony of attempting (badly, I might add) to insult someone by saying they have low self-esteem, while you yourself feel the need to insult and apparently taking a shot at my penis size while not knowing me. I wonder what your self-esteem issues are. And since Heder does have five films on the way, it makes Nicole’s original comment, for lack of a better word, DUMB. Nobody said they had to be Oscar winners. You said he has little going on in his career. A quick search proved otherwise.

      • brian

You know that “IanNeedsHelp” is Nichole.

      • brian

Oops … I meant Nicole, but either way, same person.

      • Ian

Yeah, I would assume so, but far be it from me to deny her the opportunity to have so much of a life, she needs to invent a persona to defend her stupidity. Maybe her other personality can tell me what “Keep stanning” means.

      • jessica

        Dear Ian,

You’re hilarious. If you need help stanning or pointing fake nickles out, let me know; I’d be glad to help.

    • Lynnette Miller

Knowing the family that Jon comes from (his father was my doctor and I know the family’s religous background) most likely Jon parted ways due to inappropriate and distasteful script which Comedy Central seems to only present these days.

  • Eddie

Jon Heder has always been very religious, I don’t doubt that Comedy Central asked to push an envelope he wasn’t willing to push, so he walked. Kudos for your integrity, sucks for your career especially with a recession, but way to stick to your ideals.

    • seattle_girl

Exactly what I suspect happened. But only a guess.

    • Nathan

The prude scenario sounds very believable. Especially when you consider the risque programming Comedy Central has already.

    • Jeff W.

“but way to stick to your ideals.” You mean, “way to allow magic and superstition to interfere with common sense”.

      • Jude Law’s Butthole

The dude shoves his spandex-laden crotch in Will Ferrell’s face for laughs a few years ago, but now he’s too Mormon for basic cable?

I smell some gold tablets buried in a place where only Heder can find them…

      • Haters

Wow, a website about all things entertainment and you guys start bashing religion. Classy.

      • Josh M

Wow. I’m not religious at all, but that doesn’t stop me from realizing you’re an a-hole.

      • AnteUp

Haters: Isn’t religion the greatest work of fiction of them all?

    • Caroline

That’s exactly what I thought, too. Disappointing but not surprising.

    • lulu

      totally agree –
comedy central isn’t always the best source of comedy — maybe it wasn’t funny or maybe it wasn’t appropriate but i’m glad he had the guts to back out of it if he didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do. go jon!!!!! ps he was awesome in just like heaven or whatever that cheesy movie with reese witherspoon was called.

  • Luminosity

Like Jon Heder well enough, but it shouldn’t be hard to replace him. There are probably goofy-looking actors coming out of the woodwork for the part. I don’t see the show being postponed for long.

  • Dave

Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz! I’ll definitely keep a lookout for this show. Loved them both on SNL, and I love Parnell’s recurring role on 30 Rock.

  • wp2012

this guy is still in show business?

    • Nicole

Watch out, Ian will come after you for besmirching the name of his one true love.

      • brianna

get over it Nicole, Ian was right and the fact that you spend this whole time tolling through the comments just to get back at your mortal enemy even though he probably will take no notice of the comments page any longer because he already read the article and see’s no point in returning to see what ‘hilarious’ point you’ve made now.

      • Dexx

        Are you always such a condecending b i t c h?

      • Dexx

        That was meant for Nicole

      • Nicole

        brianna loves ian. kissssses

      • Beautiful

        immature much?

      • Ian

I know reading and comprehension is a challenge for you Nicole, but you might go back and see that I said I’m not even much of a fan of his. In fact, I haven’t seen any of his movies after Napoleon Dynamite. I was merely pointing out how dumb your comment was, and a simple search of IMDB that took all of seconds proved me right. But by all means, feel free to continue proving your stupidity to anyone who may still have doubts about it.

      • Nicole

Ian give a big kissy to your girl brianna smooches nerds

      • Ian

I’m sure I wouldn’t mind kissing her. At least she’s not an imbecile.

  • sfesw

  • none

    lame

  • jeff

i’m pretty happy, any show with parnell and sanz has a lot of potential but i believe heder would have killed it

  • elena

I want to speculate about who’s going to fill Heder’s spot. Who’s a deserving comedy guy? I would have said Parnell, but he’s already cast…

  • Nicole

Anyone would be funnier than Heder. Don’t tell that to Ian, he’ll cry

    • Mary

Anyone would be more concise and have better arguments than that troll Nicole. Don’t tell her or she’ll cry!!!! :)

      • Yes

If someone is a troll – ignore them.

      • Nicole

        marys argument?

        heder is funny

        false

      • Ian

Again, the reading and comprehension proves to be an insurmountable hurdle for Nicole. If reading were a skill you possessed, you’d notice Mary said nothing of Heder.
        Her argument?
        That you’re a troll.
        True

    • Nicole

Dont tell Ian that Heder isnt funny. Hes President of his fan club. Good fa u Ian

      • Ian

Wow. You continue to dazzle me with your wit. You really are Queen of the Comebacks, aren’t you? I decided to check back to see what you came up with, and this is what I got. I have to tell you, I’m impressed by the quality of your barbs and the eloquence with which you express them. By the way, I’m holding up a huge sarcasm sign right now. I know people as dumb as you usually don’t recognize the sarcasm…

  • wp2012

Yeah jon heder is not funny at all.. he is living off that lame ass napoleon dynamite movie and pretty soon that’s gonna end too

  • Jeff W.

Jon Heder is clearly one of those actor types who walk around the Earth with an undeserved sense of entitlement at the expense of a career. You only have to look to Suzanne Somers, Shelley Long, or David Caruso for examples of how badly it can backfire on you when you leave a good situation because of your ego. Sure some of these stars have had other successes, but they also suffered long stretches of time with stalled careers. Jon Heder is known for having exactly one success under his belt, Napoleon Dynamite (although the popularity of that film continues to elude me). It amazes me that he has squandered that success with endless bad decisions. Seriously, what else has this guy done? The Benchwarmers? Blades of Glory? Mama’s Boy? A bunch of random television shows? It would appear that ego is trumping common sense. What possible “creative differences” could he be having with Will Ferrell? Just do the show and keep your trap shut, Jon, you’re quickly becoming irrelevant.

    • Nic-hole

at Shelley Long and Suzanne Sommers had reasons for their big egos…Caruso was on NYPD blue for one season and thought he was the show..turns out Jimmy Smits or even Mark-Paul Gosselaar work just as well with Dennis Franz

  • Jean Genie

Jon Heder is now following in the footsteps of Nia Vardalos & Sinbad, to name two.

  • aushole

Maybe they realized what a crappy actor he is.

    • m

maybe he realized it was a crappy show.

  • stephen

meanwhile Suzanne Summers is one of the most respected women in the industry and could buy and sell you.

    • Yes

Wow – I think you’re overstating that just a tad. I’m hoping you’re joking. My favorite Suzanne Somers story was when she thought they should hire her for “Three’s a Crowd”, the spin-off of “Three’s Company” – after she caused so much drama. Oh but She’s the Sheriff – there’s a classic.

    • Jeff W.

Really? SHe left Three’s Company only to flounder for years. After She’s the Sheriff and Thighmaster, and that horrible Step by Step what has she done of relevance? The cast of Three’s Company hated her because of her ego and during her last season they refused to shoot any scenes with her, which is why she was always only shown talking to the other characters via pay phone.
