Shannen Doherty on her 'DWTS' experience: 'Really scary'

shannon-doherty-starsDespite showing marked improvement from week to week, Shannen Doherty’s performance on Monday (not to mention her decent scores) weren’t enough to keep her on Dancing with the Stars. Fighting back tears, Doherty talked briefly to EW.com tonight about her struggle to feel at ease under the mirrored ball.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It must tough giving the interviews right now.
SHANNEN DOHERTY
: Yeah it’s pretty tough. There are definitely some emotions, some emotions of leaving my friends, and the emotion of letting him down (She gestures to her partner, Mark Ballas, and begins to cry).
MARK BALLAS
: You didn’t let me down, babe. You didn’t let me down.

This experience has clearly been emotional for you. As you were preparing for premiere week, did you ever consider quitting?
SD
: Yes, I thought about it a bunch of times. I’m not built for this, I’m not a dancer. It’s not what I do and it’s really uncomfortable for me. I’m a super private person, and I avoid the press and I avoid putting myself out there. That’s why I’m an actor. I never have to portray myself.  I can play every other person in the world but me, so doing this show has been really scary. As a result, it showed. You saw that I was incredibly uncomfortable for the most part. The only thing that was comfortable was walking into our rehearsal space at 10 a.m. and seeing Mark. We talked and really got to know each other. He’s like a brother to me.

But your scores definitely weren’t the lowest. How much do you attribute to your fans not showing enough support? You’ve always had a complicated relationship with fans.

SD: I don’t really think so. If you look at the bottom two — Pam Anderson and myself –  it’s almost like, did people think we were safe so there was no need to vote? You gotta wonder if that was the case. I have the most loyal fans in the world. They are amazing, they are the best, and they have always been there for me for 29 years. Maybe the people who aren’t fans, maybe it was black and white for them. But my fans, they love me.

Guess that SD should have stuck to that lame 90210 retread for a steady paycheck. She was not the worst by far. How Buzz Aldrin and Kate plus 8 were not in the bottom two is mystifying. Something’s rotten in Denmark, folks.

    • Dolly

I don’t get it. Gosselin did not even learn her routine. She just bounced in place and did not even do THAT on beat.

      • Sheryl Johnson

You’ve got to be kidding. Kate moved on again. The 80 year old astronaut has danced just as bad as she has. At least he has a reason, his age, but what is her excuse? She should spend more time at home with all of the kids she has. Another thing, she complains about the paparazzi, but yet she does this show – Give me a break.

    • Sandy

I understand how you would be suspicious, but what it really comes down to is how the fans and viewers voted. I wouldn’t read anything more into it.

    • Paco’s right!

Agreed. Buzz Aldrin’s an American hero, but he is creeping folks out. That soap star’s sleeping with his dance partner, which to me’s sleezy. Gosselin’s success in general is a mystery to me. Where does a woman with 8 kids and no husband find the money for $3k’s worth of extensions?

      • z

one with a tv show money- and alimony

      • z

        no a

      • SWEET PEA

SHE CAN AFFORD 3K WORTH OF EXTENSIONS BECAUSE OF HER RIDICULOUS TV SHOW AND THE FANS THAT KEPT HER ON THE AIR! GO AWAY KATE.

      • springs

All celebrities get paid $150K for competing on Dancing with the Stars, even if they get voted off on the first week.

  • sam

I thought that Mark’s injury had more to do with this than anything else. However unpopular she may be, I can’t believe that Shannen received less votes than Kate.

    • I agree with this 100%

    • Terri

I agree. Kate got the sympathy vote. I have never in all my years of watching DWTS have seen a celebrity dance as bad as Kate did. She was so awful I walked out of the room because I couldn’t stand to watch her. The way she treats the other celebritys, the way she treats her pro, well she deserves to lose. What was American thinking?????

      • bb

Two words for someone that was worse than Kate: Master P
That being said, I’m sure Buzz and Kate will be around for awhile and we will see several others fall before them.

      • Agree w/bb

Yes, Master P was the worst dancer ever on the show! And Buzz and Kate will be around for a while to generate ratings through sympathy (him) and controversy (her)…

  • __

Kate’s kids should not be allowed to vote for her. Her hyperactive uterus should not be rewarded.

    • Celimene

Hyperactive uterus? Nah, she was on the fertility drugs.

    • Sandy

Oh come on now . . . that comment is not even worthy of print — and I am not a fan of Kate, in case you are wondering.

  • Danny

As much as I personally love Shannen Doherty, I realize there are many people out there who still despise her from her “bad girl” days with 90210 and Charmed. Could that have something to do with this early ouster? Probably. Jennie Garth and Ian Ziering both got quite far on their seasons of DWTS and weren’t the greatest dancers. However they were popular with fans of 90210 while Shannen was the bitch.

  • wakeforce

sorry to say, Kate has a lot of fans that support anything she does. You have to understand that there are lots of bitter divorcees who feel sorry for Kate because a man did her wrong, but don’t despair, she will be gone soon enough!

    • Jean Genie

I agree with the “bitter divorcees” thing, wakeforce. I’m still afraid she’ll stay on til the bitter end because of her fans & those who want her to become even more of a trainwreck.

      • e

yeah, she’s the “osmund” of the season and has quite a following. people can’t seem to see the “gak” of her. watch a few of the later shows of jon & kate, starting when the kids were around 2, you’ll understand better. dwts needs to redo the voting and not give the public the final decision.

  • etm

I feel so bad that she did this for her dad and is the first one to go home. Should have been Kate…

    • iris

Kate has no business being there. I totally agree with you. Can’t wait for her to leave. And people, stop blaming her husband for the mess that she is in. Takes 2 to tango.

      • Jessica

Yeah, the husband and the one he was cheating with.

      • Jean Genie

Umm, hello, Jessica – she drove him away.

    • me too

I agree. Shannen worked hard and improved in week 2. I think she definitely should have moved to the next round. I bet people didn’t vote for her thinking she was safe in the middle of the pack.

It should have been Kate. Who the heck thought she did a good dance or is actually enjoying this experience? She’s lying everytime she says she’s doing it for her kids.
(And why aren’t those kids in bed when she’s on? It’s 9:30 PM on a school night. WTF)

      • jakass

The west coast is on pacific time making it 3 hours earlier. 9:30 on the east coast is 6:30 in California.

      • @jakass

the kids live in PA which is on the east coast – it’s 9:30 there
their teachers must love dealing with the cranky tired Gosselin kids on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings

      • Court

It airs from 8-10pm PST on the West Coast, not at 6:30pm

  • ShannenMan

With Shannen’s being voted off the show, may I say I will NEVER watch this train-wreck-of-a-show AGAIN. Just be glad that Fred Astaire can’t see this show. He would be SPINNING in his grave.

    • iris

      AMEN TO THAT SHANNENMAN…

    • Angie

I agree, Shannen was my favorite and now that she is gone i deleted Dancing with the Stars from my DVR and do not plan on watching it again. I can not believe Kate is still on the show for the simple fact is you cannot dance at all.

  • charlotte

I’m totally shocked that Shannen is the first to go. Kate is the one that should be going. Man, I can’t believe Kate had more votes than Shannen when Shannen is clearly more talented! Agghhh.

  • Dylan

I have never watched this show (and will likely never watch again), but I decided to tune in this season solely for Pam & Shannen. How these two cool, beautiful women received less votes than some annoying shrew harpy from reality tv is dumbfounding. I guess it just shows the general level of intelligence of people who watch this program.

    • @Sam and Dylan

It’s FEWER votes, not “less votes.”

  • Mike

I am sorry Shannen! I have always been a HUGE fan and was so happy to see you on D.W.T.S.! I never watched the show before you were on it. I feel so bad because I never voted! I am sure like so many of your other fans… just thought that you would be safe! I am shocked. You did great and you looked beautiful!

    • Dana

I agree…Shannan did a good job! Jake & Kate need to be asked to leave! (soon)

  • John M.

Those cultural conservatives are at it again, turning this show into a celebrity culture war when it’s supposed to be a dance competition. That’s the reason why Pamela Anderson & Shannen Dougherty were in the bottom 2. I’d like to let those conservatives know that Derek & Nicole will win the title this season whether you like it or not.

    • L

Shannon is a Republican. Based on your logic, she wouldn’t have been voted off. How can you make DWTS political?

      • Sebastian

I know several Republicans who are not culturally conservative; in fact, they’re quite socially liberal. Shannon may be a Republican, but maybe her publicized past behavior doesn’t reflect the “morals” of cultural conservatives. I agree with John M. Rather than a dance competition, this is more a popularity contest determined by the audience demographic. I suspect that’s why Lil’ Kim (who deserved to be in the finals with Gilles Marini and Melissa Rycroft) was voted out way too early in Season 8. And don’t expect Buzz Aldrin to go home anytime soon. He knew what he was doing when he was playing the “patriotic” card in his interview on the show last night. If the stars were judged only on their dancing, why in the heck were he and Kate not in the bottom two?

      • Mia

I know. What does politics have to do with DWTS? So another words people only vote for celebrities because they vote Dem or Rep? Come on? This is EN-TER-TAIN-MENT! But yes, she got robbed.

    • Court

John, that’s ridiculous. People can’t vote for who they want eliminated, so if you want your favorites to stay: vote more! Blaming the results on conservatives is a lame conspiracy theory.

  • caryn

I really liked Shannen on the show and wish she had been able to stay longer. Kate gave the worst performance I’ve seen on the show (including Master P) but is still there? Just not right.

  • Felicia Newhouse

I was voting for Shannon all the way, and feel VERY disappointed that she was voted off. I really appreciated her honesty and lack of pretentiousness.

  • Caitlin

I don’t like Shannon D, but I wanted Kate gone.

  • Cathy

I usually reply to posters, to all the people before said what I feel. I’ve never watched the show before, but wanted to see Doherty, and enjoyed her, and thought she did ok.

    • Jean Genie

In spite of her past, I liked Shannen on there, too. Maybe if she were a single mom, she would’ve gotten more of a chance. Look at what a hot MILF people still think Pammy Anderson is. Well, those in the media wouldn’t admit THAT … instead, they think it’s still all the people who can’t get over the I Hate Brenda era.
