Exclusive: Katherine Heigl on being 'disappointed' in herself and the truth behind Emmygate

katherine-heigl-ausielloImage Credit: ANDREW ECCLES FOR EWBefore we get to the excerpt from my exclusive Katherine Heigl exit interview/cover story, let’s talk, shall we, about what you’re really here for: what isn’t in that story!

For starters, the Emmy winner does her own dishes!
I found that out when her musician-husband, Josh Kelley, greeted me at the door of their L.A. abode and ushered me into the kitchen, where Heigl was wrist-deep in suds. Well, she was washing something in the sink before she reached out to shake my hand. I was too busy taking mental notes of my surroundings to know for sure. (OMG, there’s her Emmy in the living room!)

Oh, and she doesn’t live in a mansion. In fact, though the house the couple share with daughter Naleigh is lovely and boasts a lawn with an impressive manicure, it’s pretty modest by Hollywood standards. It’s more homey than mansiony. It was very much in sync with Heigl’s casual appearance that day. In capri jeans and a purple cardigan, with her new brunette locks pulled back and wearing zero makeup, she was still a knockout but hardly the glamourpuss who’d turned so many heads the night before at the ShoWest Awards (even before her wardrobe malfunctioned).

For our Q&A, Heigl poured both of us both some white wine and we retired to her second-floor deck. At one point while we were talking, Kelley interrupted to bring out the biggest cheese-and-cracker platter you have ever seen. All the while, the animal lover’s two dogs milled about inside, her two cats outside, and little Naleigh snoozed.

Too Norman Rockwellian to be true? Maybe. I’m sure some of it was a ploy to butter me up. But I was still feelin’ it. Besides, when it came time to get down to business, neither Heigl nor I pulled any punches. She knew I was going to ask her some tough questions about her departure from Grey’s Anatomy and her overall reputation as a handful, and she answered them with surprising candor. Herewith are just a few snippets from that discussion. For the complete story, pick up the new EW, on sale tomorrow. READ FULL STORY »

Question: I came home for spring break to find that my mother had sold my Smurf collection on eBay. The only thing that could make me feel better is little Glee scoop. —Blake
Ausiello:
My partner tried to do the same thing with my collection. He’s now missing something very near and dear to him. Coincidence? I think not. Onto the Glee scoop, there’s an episode coming up in which Puck gets paired up with someone new — resulting in a musical tug-of-war for his attention. Guesses? Hit the comments!

Question: Please help out a worried Gleek. Your frenemy put out a spoiler that there is a seriously sad twist ahead for Puck on Glee. Can you spill anything? —Erin
Ausiello:
Only that it doesn’t involve him losing a limb or a relative. “It’s Glee tragic,” clarifies executive producer Brad Falchuk. “He’s not going to lose an arm. No family member will pass away. He will get some news that is very surprising that will have a very big effect on his life.” READ FULL STORY »

This week's cover (exclusive!): Katherine Heigl confirms 'Grey's Anatomy' departure

entertainment-heigl-coverOne of TV’s longest-running dramas has finally (and officially) come to an end: Katherine Heigl confirms in this week’s exclusive Entertainment Weekly cover story — penned by yours truly! — that she is leaving Grey’s Anatomy.

“I am done,” declares Heigl. “We just finalized our agreement. Everyone had been working really hard to find an amicable and gracious way of letting go and moving on. It’s sad but it’s what I wanted.”

The 31-year-old actress reveals that it was family issues, not her burgeoning film career, that prompted her to approach series creator Shonda Rhimes and ask to be let out of her contract 18 months early. READ FULL STORY »

Rosie O'Donnell confirms plans to do a daytime talk show

Categories: Deals, Television, TV Biz

Rosie O’Donnell confirmed multiple reports today by announcing that she is developing a talk show for fall 2011, when Oprah Winfrey is scheduled to leave daytime. O’Donnell, who is teaming with former Warner Bros. TV executives Dick Robertson and Scott Carlin, plans to limit each show to one topic with in-studio guests and will tape them five days a week in front of a live New York audience. “In many ways I am way more equipped and prepared to do this show than my last one,” O’Donnell said in a statement. “I’ve evolved and grown and learned a lot about myself over the last eight years. The business has changed significantly since I left and obviously, come fall 2011, daytime television will change in a very dramatic way. I want to build on what Oprah began and excelled at for 25 years, in my own style and with new adaptations and ideas. I would like this show to make a difference in viewer’s lives, to be real, uplifting, authentic and focus on life, love and laughter.”

Carlin, who spoke with EW, said O’Donnell is not trying to repeat what she accomplished on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, the syndicated yakker from Warner Bros. TV that helped her earn the nickname the Queen of Nice. (The soft-serve, Emmy-winning show aired from 1996-2002.) “She’s already done a variety show and she was incredibly successful,” says Carlin, who, like Robertson, helped to launch her first talk show while working at Warners. “A void will exist starting in September with the single-subject format and Rosie would like to have some serious conversations, to get those big interviews.

“This is clearly a tipping point for daytime,” Carlin continues. “Rosie wants to get out there and do something exciting with water cooler moments. She’s not going to try to be provocative.”

O’Donnell has 18 months to develop the show and create awareness for her return to TV, but she’s already in an advantageous position: she has a two-hour radio show on Sirius XM and also has a devoted following online. It’s unclear whether she’ll be able to secure most of Winfrey’s old time slots — the ABC stations in some top markets have indicated plans to air local news in the afternoon once Winfrey leaves — but Carlin said it doesn’t matter where O’Donnell starts out come 2011. “It’s all about where you end up,” Carlin says. “As long as a show is working in enough time periods, it will eventually evolve. If the show is working, it can move to better stations and maybe even move to the afternoons.”

Exclusive: 'Good Wife' promotes Alan Cumming to series regular

Categories: Scoop, The Good Wife

good-wifeImage Credit: Jeffrey Neira/CBSIt looks like Peter’s image problems aren’t going away anytime soon on The Good Wife.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Alan Cumming — who joined the hit CBS drama last month as Eli Gold, a sharp-tongued reputation rehabilitator working with Chris Noth’s disgraced politician — will return in season 2 as a full-fledged series regular.

I may be a mistaken, but I think this marks Cumming’s first full-time TV gig. If I’m wrong I’m sure I’ll hear about it in the comments section. Speaking of which, head there now to weigh in on whether keeping Eli around is a Good thing (see what I did there?).
