Exclusive: 'How I Met Your Mother' throws an all-star wedding!

how-i-met-your-mother-castImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos (3); Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Cliff Lipson/CBSRemember last May, when How I Met Your Mother‘s Ted (Josh Radnor) lost Stella (Sarah Chalke) to Tony (Jason Jones) at the altar? Well, as we first teased last month, the screenplay Tony wrote is now a star-studded movie, and in this season’s next-to-last episode, our hero — and we — will be seeing it!

In the May 17 installment, Ted takes a date — played by 2010′s go-to guest star Judy Greer (Modern Family last month, The Big Bang Theory next month) — to a showing of The Wedding Bride, which Tony penned about his love triangle with his rival and Stella. But it’s fair to say that the author’s take on the situation is… um, skewed.

How skewed?

The film’s protagonist, Tony, is played by Sex and the City Adonis Jason Lewis, and Stella, by Watchmen hottie Malin Akerman. Ted, renamed Jed Moseley in the flick within the sitcom, is, by contrast, portrayed as a jerk by none other than… The Middle‘s Chris Kattan.

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, how hysterical do you think this is going to be? And what do you think of HIMYM‘s Bizarro World recasting of our regulars? Could you have done better? Sound off below! (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick)

I give it a “1.” Still love this show, but this sounds off-kilter and maybe just plain stupid.

“I absolutely love this show.” That’s something I would have said two years ago. Now I’m concerned for it. There seem to be two bad episodes for every one good one (and this season’s good ones don’t even match up to the first season’s worst episodes). They seem to have thrown all believability out the window. I hope they get it back on track.

      • Becky

        Agree.

Believabilty? It’s a TV show! A sitcom! The whole fake movie thing souonds hilarious.

      • Q

Hey, seriously – my ex made a movie about our breakup. One woman’s unbelievable is another’s truth.

I still like the show, but i agree that they are running out of the ideas. Sometimes newer episodes are even contradicting to some of the older ones. Plus it is getting ridiculous that Ted has that many girlfriends before mother. They should just introduce the mother, maybe that would spice things up.

Word. How I Met Your Mother was brilliant for the first couple seasons, but this one has just not been up to the same standards.

    • Re-donkulus

This show bought into their own hype a while back, it is starting its descent into mediocrity

      • Becky

I agree with this comment too.

      • Kevin

Yeah, I haven’t watched the show much this season. It just got old.

      • Alia

        Sigh. Sadly, I must agree.

      • maiv

Yeah, I have to agree as well. It hasn’t been the same since the third season, but I do have to chuckle at the actors for Tony’s movie.

      • b

You hit the nail on the head.

    • Bobby’s Robot

The show has been terribly uneven this season, but his does sound funny.

      • Caroline

I agree – I don’t think it’s past its prime, but it’s been uneven and last season was better. I think this episode sounds pretty funny, however.

  • Amanda

This is your April Fools joke right?

    • SteveStrifeX

Agreed, I’m thinking it’s his April Fools joke. Any comment Michael? :)

  • Christina

    Hilarious casting! I can’t wait!

  • kevin

this is going to be funny! Judy Greer will be great on this show! HIMYM does a great job with guest stars, better than any other sitcom of late. They don’t let the big star take over the story, but rather intigrates them into it in a believable way

    • BHM1304

Actually “Party Down” on Starz does better with guest casting than any other comedy on television. The guests at the parties worked are always great and the actors never seem to be just taking the roles to pick up a pay check as is often the case on “HIMYM”. Thank god a good comedy that is actually funny is coming back soon. Thank god the other Rob Thomas is still making television.

  • Remy

    10 – I’m excited.

  • Mareen

I am soo excited! I love HIMYM and I really hoped they would show a part of the movie Tony directed.

  • Sarah

Chris Kattan as a jerkTed?! Made of win. Can’t wait to see the look on Ted’s face. Awesome, awesome.

    • Elizabeth

Yeah, and Kattan is about 10 yrs older than the other two… well, this is told from Tony’s point of view, so…

  • ggny

i hope this isnt a april fools joke because if it isnt this is gonna be amazing

  • thegardischhour

    April fools!

    • Spike

An April Fool’s joke over a month in the making? Either very ambitious or highly unlikely.

  • desf

    all-star? hardly

    • crispy

That’s exactly what I was about to say! The phrase “all-star” is a bit hyperbolic… welcome to the world of Ausiello where every column is an OMG! EXCLUSIVE! EXCLUSIVE! the most important news in the world! Honestly, I’m surprised he hasn’t demanded Matt Drudge hand over his red screaming siren.

  • Mary

It’s an 11! This sounds exciting!

  • 123

    OMG this sounds soo funny!

  • Mia

Big fan since season 1 and I’m stoked about this one. It sounds funny as hell (especially, Kattan as “Jed”).

  • Karen

I just laughed so hard at that my lunch flew out of my mouth. This is awesome!

  • Disappointed

Doesn’t sound funny at all to be honest, and I’m not excited to see any of these people on the show, only person I know in that whole list is Malin and that’s because she was in Harold and Kumar/Watchmen.

The entire season has been pretty brutal except for the sporadic Barney centric episodes(ex: The Playbook). It’s sad, because I dunno what changed between the seasons, but season 5 has been a drag(ex: Slapsgiving 2.. maybe the worst episode I’ve seen on any TV show ever.)

    • Vince

Wow what a hater.. Stop watching if you think its so bad. I happen to have laughed very hard during every episode this season. Even the reruns which I’ve seen already make me laugh a second time around. Thats more then I can say for most shows on TV right now. Maybe I’m less mature or something, but I find this season just as funny as the past few..

      • Liz

I like this season. I laughed a lot at the last new episode. I have no complaints other than Barney and Robin broke up without exporing the true hilariousness of their relationship.
