Exclusive: Will DirecTV rescue 'Damages'?

Tags: , , News, Scoop

damagesImage Credit: Craig Blankenhorn/FXThe fate of another critically acclaimed but ratings-challenged drama series may once again rest in the hands of DirecTV.

Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that Sony is talking to DirecTV’s 101 Network about partnering on a possible fourth season of Damages. The cost-sharing arrangement would be similar to the one DirecTV and NBC forged with Friday Night Lights, which means future seasons of Damages would air first on DirecTV with a second window on FX.

An insider close to the talks says Sony reached out to DirecTV last month after it became clear that, for financial reasons, FX could no longer keep Damages afloat on its own. “DirecTV is one of several outlets that have been approached,” says a source. “All options are on the table.”

Despite widespread critical adoration, Damages has always been a ratings weakling. Season-to-date, the show is averaging under a million viewers. Its 18-49 numbers, meanwhile, are positively frightening; in recent weeks the mystery thriller has been notching a .2 in the desirable demo. That said, Damages gives FX tremendous cache. It’s the network’s most critically lauded property and a consistent awards magnet. The show has picked up four Emmys, including two consecutive lead actress wins for Glenn Close. The third season concludes on April 19.

Reps for FX and Sony declined to comment.

Thoughts? Should DirecTV do the right thing and rescue Patty Hewes and Co. from certain death? Sound off below!

I love this show, but at the same time, I’m not terrified of losing it. There have been two or three too many dream sequences this season for my liking.

Yes, they most definitely should! This drama is one the best I’ve seen and certainly the best out this current TV show season. This season itself has been nothing short of excellent.

I LOVE DAMAGES!!!!! Glenn Close IS Patty Hewes. This show is so riveting, exhilirating and downright impeccable. I pray DirecTV picks up this fabulous show, they won’t regret it.

  • Ginger

No…. I don’t want DirecTv to be the only place I can get Damages…I am so sad to see this show on the fringe, because it is an amazing show with superb actors. Maybe TNT or another channel everyone gets could save this wonderful show?

    • Sham On

It won’t be the only place. It’ll be on Directv first, and THEN, FX.

    • Chaz

Did you even read the article? FX is looking to SHARE the show with DirecTV. Both networks would air it

      • Ginger

I realized that after I typed it…. my bad. Fingers got ahead of the head. I did read the article.

    • Jelana

Yes, so where is Friday Night Lights? Same arrangement, but the show is MIA on the NBC

      • Nishka19

Jelana, Check your TV schedule closer to the end of the month. I believe it’s debuting on April 23rd on NBC. If DirecTV can give me one or two more season of Damages as good as this one has been, then please do!

  • Jordan

Damages is the best show I’ve ever watched. And i say this as a big ‘Lost’ and ‘The Wire’ fan.

    Go DirectTV Go!

  • charmer1

    Save it.

  • Janniel

    Yes please.

  • Jason

Great show. I’d enjoy another season.

    • Ann C

What is to become of TV? I fear an endless, mindless sea of shows. Damages makes you think, wonder, and so much more. An hour of TV I REALLY enjoy and would HATE to see it end.
We have enough fluff on TV, please save a GREAT show.
