Exclusive first look: Minka Kelly lights up NBC's 'Parenthood'

minka-kellyImage Credit: Justin Lubin/NBCWhen the time came for Parenthood to introduce the character of Gaby Moss, an Asperger’s aid that Kristina (Monica Potter) and Adam (Peter Krause) hire to help out with their son, Max, the NBC drama’s boss, Jason Katims, immediately thought of his onetime Friday Night Lights ingénue Minka Kelly.

“On the one hand, she’s charming and easy-going,” says Katims, “but she’s also quietly forceful, which is something this role requires. It’s a tough position to come in and tell anybody, ‘Hey, you’re not doing a good job with your kid.'”

Katims sent Kelly the script and within 24 hours she wanted in. “It was fortuitous that she had an opening in her schedule to do it,” he says of her two-episode arc, which kicks off next Tuesday. “Should we get more seasons of the show and if she’s available, I would love to [bring her back]. We’re waiting to see on both fronts.”

    hey am i first? :)

  • Buffy Freak

Just please, please don’t go the too-obvious route of having her have an affair with Adam.

    • Jobless

I don’t think a 2 episode arc is enough time to have an affair storyline, and also I don’t think this show is the type to do something like that on a whim. It seems to be a little more mature than that.

      • Buffy Freak

Yeah I missed the bit about it only being 2 eps. so hopefully you’re right.

  • dryedmangoez

That’s pretty awesome! Please more FNL alums on Parenthood. Make it happen Jason Katims! Hehe.

i really enjoy this show and hope that keep it around

  • S.O.

Will Derek Jeter make a cameo?

  • Levi

I’m really looking forward to where they take Max and his family.

this is so easily becoming my favorite show! it has a way of making me feel good at the end of each episode.

  • David4

    The show is doomed anyways.

    • b

I doubt it, NBC can’t afford to lose much right now.

  • Christopher

Derek Jeter’s new favorite TV show.

“It was fortuitous that she had an opening in her schedule to do it,”

So, this is blogese for “she’s unemployed?” Because it’s pretty obvious you could fit Yankee Stadia, old and new, into that “opening” in her career.

I really want this show to be a hit. But so far I feel like I’ve seen every character and every situation before…nothing has surprised me, yet. So please PTB, don’t make the Asberger’s aid affair bait. Give Max’s storyline the respect it demands. Surprise me!

Did her publicist get you to write this?

  • bootsycolumbia

It’s aide, not aid. I wish EW would employ some copy editors to proof read this website (hey, I’m available!). OK, got that out of my system. I wish NBC would find a better day and time for Parenthood. Tuesday at 10 is no good. If I’m up that late, I’m going to watch The Good Wife.

    • sisupower

I agree. I am a big Lauren Graham fan so was looking forward to this show, but was already too hooked in The Good Wife to tear myself away.

  • allie

This shos is getting better and better. I am loving it. I hope #1 the aid doesn’t have an affair with Adam and #2 this show is promptly renewed.

  • Rachel

I love this show, and I hope that despite it’s crappy timeslot, NBC has the brains to renew it and give it a real season.
