'One Life to Live' star Brett Claywell talks about losing job after depicting gay sex scene in daytime

one-life-liveImage Credit: Steve Fenn/ABCFans of ABC’s One Live to Live are still reeling from the news that the producers have decided to eliminate the storyline involving gay couple Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) and Oliver Fish (Scott Evans). Last year, the characters participated in daytime’s first-ever love scene involving two men — a development that was lauded by organizations like the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Last month, the daytime drama received a GLAAD Media Award two days after the news broke that ”Kish” had been cut. Says Jarrett Barrios, GLAAD’s President, “While we understand that the close of storylines is a frequent occurrence on daytime dramas, canceling this story just as it gains momentum is a step backward in ABC Daytime’s representation of the lives of gay Americans.” (ABC says there are no plans to advance their story but “the door is always open for their return.”)

The actors will have their last scene together on April 12; Claywell’s final episode is April 16. Claywell talked to EW about the loss of his character and why he thinks ratings had something to do with it. (OLTL remains the second least-watched sudser in daytime, behind the canceled As the World Turns.) Check out the Q&A after the jump.

Have you already wrapped your last day on the set?
Yeah. The story broke the last day I was on set. It happened very abruptly. I could see the writing on the wall, but it was very abrupt how it happened.

How long have you been on the show?
I was hired in November 2008 to play a different role. I was supposed to be a young high school teacher who had an affair with a student. They decided to go a different direction with that. They sat us down in June of ’09 and said that the two characters had a relationship in college. They just kind of put it together.

At that time, did the producers talk about wanting to do some groundbreaking things with this relationship?
No. They didn’t talk about it when we first got the role. It slowly built up steam, I guess. We had no idea the impact we were going to make. We weren’t aware of how big this was going to become to people. It became a pretty big deal.

Why do you think Kish resonated with fans?
We were the first [gay] love scene in daytime. It had a lot to do with the writing, but it also has a lot to do with the way Scott and I played the roles. We made a choice in the beginning that we were going to underplay a lot of this storyline. We just wanted it to be really honest and really authentic and just simple. Just tell a love story. That was the most important thing to communicate — love between two men, honestly, on television. I think that people really responded to that because there weren’t a lot of bells and whistles.

Why the decision to go with a sex scene?
I don’t think they were intentionally building towards something. I think that scene came because of fan reaction. It was more from demand than anything. Because there is a community out there, a large percentage of people who are misrepresented in media, in television, in all forms of art.

Did you think the sex scene was explicit?
No. I keep saying that if you take Milk and you take Brokeback Mountain and you take the work we did, I feel like we stand toe-to-toe with the work that was done. But we told the story differently. The love scene between Oliver and Kyle…it was a moment where one man was finally coming to terms with sexuality after years of denying it and after his family disowns him. He was finally coming to terms and accepting the fact that he is comfortable with this man loving him. For Kyle, my character, it was a moment to be nurturing and loving towards somebody who’s going through a really hard moment to become comfortable with himself.

It sounds like it was a very fulfilling role for you.
Incredibly. I come from North Carolina. My father’s from Kentucky. No way is my family narrow-minded in any way, but I was surrounded by a society that was. In a way, for me, it was equally as fulfilling to play this role. This role changed my life in many ways.

When you were preparing to do the scene, were you starting to get any push back from the network? Were the writers second guessing themselves?
No because our writer is actually a gay man. There were a lot of ABC execs in the booth when we were filming it. I know a lot of people were there watching to make sure that it fit all the standards. I just think people are still so tender and touchy about this subject. It surprises me for sure.

How long after that episode aired did you start to hear that maybe this didn’t go over so well?
The day I was released from the show!

How much time had lapsed between the day that episode aired and the day you were released?
The episode aired December 30 and we were released two weeks ago [on or around March 11].

Between that time, you didn’t know if there were any problems?
We weren’t filming as much anymore. They were barely using us. If the ratings declined, there has to be some reason and somebody has to be blamed for it. I’m very proud because I feel like we were one of the best storylines on daytime television. I’m very proud of my performances and I’ll stand by any one of them. Any day that I worked, I’ll stand by what Scott and I did together.

The ratings haven’t been that great for the show.
No, they’re definitely not. They’re trying to protect it, I think, for sure. It’s sad what is happening to the genre. It’s a sad thing to watch.

Do you think had there not been the sex scene, you guys would still be there?
I don’t know if we’d want to be there if we hadn’t done the sex scene. A year ago, I wouldn’t be saying this. I think the storyline would have been incomplete without the sex scene. Daytime, for 42 years or however long it’s been on television — that is what daytime does. They tell love stories over and over and over to people across the country. Year in and year out, day in and day out, they’re telling stories of love and they’re telling true stories of relationships. We would not have been truthful if we had held back that scene. I will never, ever regret [it]. I’m very proud and I stand by all the work we did.

Lynette: a lot of questions about the one and only “gay sex scene.” Kish was so much more than that and I say that as one who is not a gay man and never regularly watched OLTL. This is clearly a cop-out by the ABC Daytime execs and the producers behind OLTL since Kish were barely used on the show, to blame them for the decline in ratings is absurd and offensive.

  • whatevs

We could eliminate daytime sex scenes altogether. Problem solved.

    • trizzy

      I agree

    • Silke

And why should we do that?

  • sophie

I only watched OLTL because of the Kish Story! When they are gone i’ll stop watching.

Kudos to Brett and Scott for great and honest portrayals of a gay couple in love. They were a joy to watch.

    • Ann

Same here. I started watching OLTL simply because of Kish story! When they are gone, so am I.

    • md1347

      Same here.

    • Owen

I only got to know about OLTL BECAUSE of KISH, and have enjoyed their story immensely. It’s a shame that they’re gone. Count me out too!

    • Sue

I too ONLY watch OLTL because of KISH. Now that KISH is gone, I will be too.

    • Greg

      I hate ABC

  • Chels725

They weren’t the reason for the decline in viewership. The incest cult leader and the Morasco fiasco are mainly to blame. Now you’ve got a 30 year old woman with the mind of a 17 year old in high school. The Kish boys were the reason to watch OLTL & when they win their Emmys this year, they’ll have the last laugh.

    • sam

I agree, that Jessica in high school story is absolutely ridiculous.

      • Lisa

The 30 year old teenager storyline is ridiculous. The Rex’s continuously changing, years long search for a father (and it’s been changed how many times now?) accompanied by the snoozeworthy (but always front burner) relationship with Gigi is part of OLTL’s problem. And having a three-time rapist as a romantic lead is part of OLTL’s problem. Kish was actually a bright spot for the show.

      • Buzz

actually , Jess in high school is kinda hilarious ..bree williamson is giving the show’s real life teens a run for their money — though she seems almost more tween than teen, more immature than a senior in high school …though maybe that’s how they were in the 80′s ..?

      • KRG

Jessica has THE Worst story line ever. What a waste for such an exceptional actress in Bree.. KISH rocks! And keep with Rex and also the Kramer girls (especially Kelly), they are always hot!

      • Linda

I agree, the Jessica storyline is the reason I am NOT watching OLTL as much as I use to. It is absolutely ridiculous. As a straight person, it did not bother me at all to see the KISH storyline kick off. This is 2010 for goodness sake. Between Jessica running around acting like a teenager obsessed with Chris and Mitch and his fake follwers – OLTL is losing it.

    • Snarf

      Sounds like 90210

    • Kate

I’m so sick of Mitch’s nonsense. Do TPTB think we’re dying for more story with this rapist who tried to rape and impregnate his own daughter (after he scrambled her brains)? Jessica does not act like she is 17 she is acting like she’s 12/13. I didn’t watch this show when Jessica was actually 17 but I’ve been assured she was actually mature and not some stalkery spaz. The Morasco Fiasco… ugh. I’m no fan of either but I think they killed the wrong sister (RIP Little Red Riding Ho).

  • sam

These guys are two of the best actors on the show. The plot line involving Fish being the baby’s father is very compelling. Why are they to blame for ratings being low when they are getting lower for every soap opera. The stupid Mitch story is probably the reason nobody wants to watch it. I think OLTL should be ashamed of itself.

    • SueM

Yep, the over-used Mitch hasn’t worked for awhile now. He’s become a comic book villain and it’s a real snoozer. And why do they keep trying to put John and Natalie together? Another rehashed storyline that nobody cares about.

    • Cardsgal

Hey, I actually loved this s/l, especially the character of Kyle, but the guy who plays Fish is NOT a great actor (better than his mother, but she’s terrible!).

    • Chris

I agree. Mitch story is boring.

  • JennaD

OMG EW.COM finally did a KISH mention, I don’t think I could love you guys anymore. Yay! I wonder if this article will turn up in print in one of the issues as well?

I’m sort of leading a fan campaign for Kish. Please visit http://www.dontputkishinthecloset.blogspot.com

Read all about our various efforts, including the Scott Evans (“Oliver Fish”)-endorsed Fish4Kish!

  • Margaret

I totally agree that Kish is being used as a scapegoat for the ratings and i believe that actually brought many new viewers to the show and have established a huge fan base…if anything is to blame it is the faux Dorian and Todd/Marty storylines that drove viewers away so why are those people still there?..Brett and Scott were amazing together and ABC will soon have cause to regret letting them go and ending the best love story they have ever had……

    • Margaret

I meant to say that the faux lesbian Dorian story was a turn off for people and OLTL should have just focused on the popular Kyle and Oliver love story….

    • queue55

Thank you! The whole Dorian and her “wife” story was a MAJOR turn off, not Kyle and Oliver!

  • Vikki Sixx

Just thought it should be shared that ATWT has had a boost in ratings since the cancellation and now consistently gets better ratings than OLTL (which is starting to do better than GH…maybe people are finally sick of the mobster show)

    • Vikki Sixx

At least according to the ratings published in Soap Opera Weekly/Soap Opera Digest

    • Michael

According to TVbythenumbers, OLTL had one of the steepest drops in ratings in overall audience and the coveted ratings demos either last week or two weeks ago. It was shortly after they announced that Kish would be retired. Conflicting reports?

  • ikitty

I have stuck by this show for a long time. I was impressed with how they played this relationship out and glad they followed through. This is very disappointing news. If Jessica being an obnoxious high school student is their idea for a good story line vs kyle and fish? well, they have lost their minds. I mean, seriously, let’s get some fresh ideas on this show.

  • Brianna

Thank you so much for addressing this story, though they were more than just that sex scene. I loved the KISH storyline and felt it was a major improvement for the struggling show. Brett and Scott were amazing, this decision is a huge mistake.

  • Kishmet Lily

The best part of the sex scene was that it wasn’t done just for the sake of doing a sex scene or to be groundbreaking. It was done as a natural culmination of a great love story. OLTL is just a hot mess right now. They have axed many of their best actors (Scott Evans, Brett Claywell, Scott Clifton) and kept others that can’t act their way out of a paper bag. KISH was and is the best storyline this show has to offer right now. Ending it is a huge mistake.

    • Sandy

I completely agree. The sex scene was a natural part of the story that was very well told. ABC has made a huge mistake not continuing to explore this beautiful love story.

  • sam

This is also the show that had Vicki’s husband suddenly reveal that he was gay and murder a bunch of people. I thought that they had a lot to make up for after that idiocy and the Kish story line seemed to be doing that. Now they have ruined everything. I have watch it since its beginning and now I hope it gets canceled.

    • GA

That was Nora’s husband, not Viki’s.

      • sam

        Sorry, you are right.

  • Sandy

The love story of Kyle and Oliver (Kish) was one of the BEST romantic storylines I have ever watched on daytime. A fantastic story with amazing performances by Brett Claywell and Scott Evans.
It is a travesty that someone at ABC decided that this story should be the excuse for poor ratings. This story brought in a large and diverse following for OLTL as anyone can see by the amount of fan backlash. I, for one, am incredibly disappointed that the story will no longer continue. As a long time ABC soap viewer, that’s the end. When Brett and Scott exit Llanview so will I.

  • sam

    Sorry, “watched”

  • anonymous

As far as I know the ratings were bad before the sex scene so I don’t see why some people are blaming it.The characters in that scene aren’t appearing much anymore but last I checked OLTL still isn’t doing that great. They are just the scapegoat, not the real problem imho.
