Exclusive: 'Veronica Mars' creator insists movie is 'not dead'

veronica-marsImage Credit: Robert Voets/UPNReports that the Veronica Mars movie is in the final stages of rigor mortis have apparently been greatly exaggerated. According to the franchise’s boss, Rob Thomas, there’s still a chance his teen sleuth will be reborn on the big screen.

“It’s not dead,” insists Thomas. “I continue to want to do it. It’s funny, because the rumors go around and around. Kristen Bell had said to somebody that I had written a script, and that wasn’t correct. I did have a treatment and a pitch, with which I went to Warner Bros. and [Mars producer] Joel Silver and said, ‘Here is the fastball version of the movie, the big studio version of the movie that I think we can make.’ And I think they did one of their brand-awareness surveys and were like, ‘We don’t know if we can make money with that.’ So it’s been back-burnered. But I still want to do it. I’m still happy to do it. We’re still looking into it.”

Thomas, whose Starz comedy, Party Down, kicks off its second season on April 23, acknowledges that the project has a built-in expiration date. “There is a bit of a ticking clock [because] Kristen Bell does continue to age,” he concedes of his 29-year-old leading lady. “And doing ‘teen detective’ [is a] dicey proposition. But frankly, I think Veronica Mars as a 30-year-old noir detective at some point in the future would still be interesting to me.

“In sort of the tidal wave and roller coaster of feeling upbeat or downbeat about it,” Thomas concludes, “I’d say I’m feeling in the middle right now.”

Hey, a little hope is better than no hope, right? Now prove to Warner Bros. and Joel Silver that a return trip to Mars can be profitable by pledging your support in the comments! Rob Thomas is living in a dream world, and so is anybody else who still expects to see this. Can people just give it up already? RT isn’t being fair to the fans by encouraging them to join his denial.

    • BlatantURLPimpingMustDie

Agreed. He is being just downright cruel at this point.

      • Wickeddoll

        Die, spammer die

    • CindyC.

Not giving up got “Serenity” made. Having faith & staying true to the cause is what fandom is all about. He is being plenty fair to his fans, by not giving up. Why should he?

      • kaci

        Agreed!

      • Greg

Firefly sold WAY more DVDs than Veronica Mars. It’s dead, mourn, move on.

      • ewj

Please do not use Serenity as an example – it lost money until it got to TV reruns.

Which means, it will not be made unless its budget is $30 or less.

      • m.

I don’t see a reason why it budget should be over 15-20 mil and it should be able to make this kind of money back.
Still hope to see the movie, Veronica Mars is one of the best TV series ever.

      • EmperorCheese

Is that supposed to be a good thing that Serenity got made?
What a horrific way to destroy interest in a brilliantly short-lived series. Using shallower plots and empty deaths to result in a movie that is an abomination when compared to its progenitor.

      • veronica

i think that they should do the movie because it was a grate tv show and i really do hope that they do the movie and soon because they ended the show with alot of ?’s i just would really like to see a the movie if they go on and do it and i hope they do and soon.

      • L

@Greg – we are waiting for the blu-rays!

    • Luis

Isn’t it a bit late for an April Fool’s prank?

      • lynsey

        yeooooo

i absoulutey luv dis weee show xoxox

txt me 07542460967 if ur a veronica fanatic!!!!!

    • Wilson

I’m still in denial. As long as there are others to partake in the delusion, why not? Hell, it might even become a good indie flick or something :) You don’t have to have a ton of money into a story like VM :P

      • Brett

If they wait long enough, it can be “Murder She Wrote: The Movie,” and they can just switch out Veronica Mars for Jessica Fletcher.

    • LOL

Is Miss Bell really engaged to that dude from Parenthood? That’s just awful.

    • jpratm

well in all its cus we love RONNIE just as much so go and watch LOST while you still can

    • Annie

I would love to see a VM movie! And I’m not sure how Rob is being cruel by trying to get some closure for VM fans. Veronica and Logan were one of the best couples on TV. I would love to see them in a movie together. Please make a VM movie and I’m talking to you Warner Bros. and VM producer.

    • L

No, no we can’t give it up already.

    • Laura

It is not dead yet. ALL VERONICA MARS FANS ARE KEEPING THE FAITH. It will be made, don’t let the hope die. He is being fair because of him giving these interviews and talking VM, it’s getting more attention from everyone all around.

  • DJ Doena

    I’d watch it.

I’d also watch a VM Season 4 even if she were way out of College.

    • Me

Season 4 was going to be her out of college. They had a teaser in the season 3 DVD pack. She was going to be a rookie agent at the FBI. Personnaly, I was a fan of VM and am still a fan of Bell. I think a movie could be done, if it were done right. She can’t be a teen slueth though, it just wouldn’t work. Maybe someone from her past is murdered, and Mars investigates, or something like that. That way they could bring back past characters, but they would all be in there 30′s and married or something.

      • Lindis

OH PLEASE! I need closure! someone give me closure. I need Veronica/Logan closure (by them getting back together, please). And well, if the movie does not happen, please Rob Thomas, make a script for the movie and post it online!

      • Madi

kristian bell and rob thomas talked and decided it would be in college agian but having the internship aswell

      • Madi

nonono, that would be terrible she could play a 19-20 yr old she doesnt look that old and people play characters 20 something years younger than they actually are if theywere old and married it wouldnt work and wheres the closure from that terrible cliff hanger they left us on with season 3 what are they surposed to do have a little group and talk about it, or use lots of flashbacks cause if they do that she will still be playing a 19-20 yr old teen.

  • Corinne

Yea, I’m not going to buy her still in college. KB is years older than me and I’m out of college already.

Hopefully they come up with a better story. I wasn’t a big fan of seasons 2 and 3.

    • chiefly

it should be a “his girl friday” type, 10 years out of college, veronica trying to solve a mystery for logan while he tries to win her back

    • Christina

just because she’s older than you doesn’t mean she LOOKS older than you. she was already 24 when she was playing a 16 year old. she still looks college age, i’d buy it.

    • L

Granted the sooner the better for that to work but….

Look at how old some are who play HS students! Plenty of late 20′s have done that. Heck I think some of the original BH90201 cast were 30 when it first started.

Also, so what if she is older than you and you are already out college?? So what? People often look older or younger than they are.

Heck, I’m back on campus for an advanced degree and get confused with being an undergrad ALL the time and even got asked to vote for the junior class representative a few months ago as I walking across campus…. at 35!

  • Vicente

Why do people still care? If its ever going to be made, the same people who didnt watch the TV show, will not watch the movies, making it unprofitable and a big mistake to make.
And besides there just isnt that much money to spend in Hollywood like there was 5 years ago. Everyone is making remakes of successful things or past properties, not failed WB/CW/UPN series

    • rkor

Yes, but hardcore fanbases make these movies at the very least non-losses. Serenity may not have lit the box office on fire, but it did make its money back. Plus fans will buy a lot of the ancillary money makers (in other words, the DVDs and assorted other things not tied to original release). In other words, it wouldn’t be a big mistake.

    • Travis

      Serenity didn’t do that badly.

      • rkor

According to Wikipedia, it wasn’t until the release of the DVD that Serenity made its money back. I personally don’t see that as something to stop a studio from making a VM movie. They just have to agree to keep the budget on the small-ish side and realize that they’re majorly dependent on the fans.
Or they could do a TV movie as has been suggested below. Farscape’s mini-series wrap-up did quite well thanks to the fans.
Or Rob Thomas could go the comic route. I think that VM comics would be awesome.

    • kevan

I didn’t watch the TV show when it ran, but on DVD after it was over and LOVED it. I am excited for the possibility of a movie and know some others who did not find the show until after it ran that would like a movie too. It’s a great show, and Party Down is funny too! (I watched that only because of its connection to VM and enjoyed it.)

    • Courtney

I’ve been a vocal VM fan from the start and I can’t tell you how many friends have come to me after the show was canceled, saying something along the lines of “I just got VM from Netflicks and now I see what you were talking about”

      • Jason

I’m one of the people who used Netflix to watch it and I do see what people were saying. Amazing show that deserves a movie that brings the original cast together and ties up loose ends.

    • Madi

i know A LOT of people my age who love the show(14) i didnt get a chance to watch it on tv i bet lots of people are the same

  • katrina

This would be excellent!! I’ve been waiting for this – I loved VMars and a movie would be so much fun.

  • jaron

it HAS to happen…. I’m glad that people are still asking. I think if the story picks up somewhere in the future that makes room for a more interesting mystery to happen…

  • David

At this point I’d even settle for a straight to DVD or a TV movie!

    • Sal

Me too! May not be too profitable as a big screen picture, but I’ll take straight-to-DVD or a TV movie for sure!

    • Keira

I think a straight-to-DVD or TV movie is the answer. I hate to say it, as I was a huge VM fan, but even I wouldn’t greenlight this for the silver screen. But why not give the fans closure (and by “closure,” I mean “Logan and Veronica back together”) and make the movie for DVD? That way it wouldn’t be such an expense and you don’t have to try to market it to the public at large.

      • Jessica

By ‘closure’ I would mean not Piz… Maybe not any of the guys. And can all the negative responses go away? Waste your time elsewhere please.

      • lefty

        LOGAN AND VERONICA FTW!

    • Brett

How about an animated straight-to-DVD version?

    • rory

A tv movie would be great, because RT could do whatever he wanted without dumbing it down for the masses.

      • Logan

You mean like he dumbed it down for Season 3? Eesh that was crap television.

  • Anne

It’s unlikely, but that doesn’t matter, it HAS to happen.
    Which it probably won’t.
    Which sucks.

  • Ruthie

I just want some closure on this. A definite “yes” or “no,” not “We’re hoping for it maybe someday hopefully one day.” Kristen Bell may be pushing 30, but IMO she could still pass for someone younger, so a VM movie wouldn’t be completely implausible. Just make up your damn minds already!

    • Madi

      i agree

  • La Dulce

I’d definitely go see it. They would need to adjust for age, though fortunately KB looks younger than she is. Not sure I honestly see it happening (RT may be hearing voices telling him to save France) but I would love it if it did.

  • Lily

As long as she somehow ends up with Logan! If she’s an FBI agent finally I wouldn’t mind. I’ve read some great VM fanfic over the years… if fans can come up with interesting plots and storylines so can he. He created her after all.

  • Josh

Why not just straight to DVD? A theatrical release seems far fetched, but I could see it straight to DVD. I mean, at least it’s something, right? Just make it for about the price of a single episode, and take it back to the tone of season 1.

    • Christina

Totally agree. This seems like the best idea. Kind of like what they did with the deluxe Freaks & Geeks DVD set — take preorders and don’t make tons more past that so you don’t waste much money. All of the dedicated fans would pay at least $20 for a movie.

    • Tim

There is no way that Kristen Bell, at this point in her career, is going to make a direct-to-DVD movie. That would just be moving backwards on two levels.

      • Logan

Because she’s had so many box-office successes?

The only even halfway good movie she was in was Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and there, Jason Segel’s penis even got more laughs than she did.

      • Madi

she is probably the one most wanting this to happen i dont think she will care if its straight to dvd if they told people about it maybe did some re-runs of the seasons maybe they might get new fans they are stuck looking at the ratings and fans from more than 5years ago they need to give it another shot

  • Chrissy

Wow, must be a slow week for spoilery news cause this screams: Crap we have to post something today.

Besides that, I loved VM, but it’s been over for a long time now, & it will stay that way.

  • Emilee

I pledge to see this movie at least 800 times in theaters.

    • Lindsey

      Ditto.

  • graeme

LOL, I can’t believe you are still tracking this. It was an unpopular show when it finished airing a couple years ago. What makes you think a movie is going to be successful?

    • Jo

Suck it, Grammy (because your name makes me think you are a mean-spirited Grandma. See what I did there?)

      • Jessica

        ^ditto.

    • Dominique

Unpopular? Well, what rock did you crawl under when this show was on air? It was extremely popular, it’s just the network that axed it, like it axed every good show they had.

      • Kyle

VM wasn’t popular. Popular shows do well in ratings.

It had a very passionate fanbase but that doesn’t mean it was popular. Like One Tree Hill. Powerfully loyal fanbase, but 2 million people isn’t popular.
