'Glee' season finale scoop: Celeb judges set for Regionals!

As you know, the season-ender — airing June 8 — sets the stage for the Regionals showdown between New Directions and Vocal Adrenaline. Of course, no competition would be complete without a panel of celebrity judges, and at last night’s comeback party in Hollywood, series creator Ryan Murphy revealed the lineup: Previous Glee guest Josh Groban will be joining upcoming Glee guest Olivia Newton-John and Sue “Don’t Call Me Simon” Sylvester on the panel.

“The theme of Regionals is celebrity judges,” Murphy explains. “Sue is now a nationwide celebrity. And Olivia and Josh only like choirs that sing their songs, so that’s funny. They wanted to do something that played against what people think about them… to play against type. So we gave them an opportunity. And it’s funny to have Sue as a judge when she doesn’t really know about [music], and she has it out for that darn Glee club.”

The finale, which starts shooting next week, isn’t all fun and games, though. Matthew Morrison (Will) just got the script and calls it “the best episode I have ever read of the show. It is phenomenal. I was bawling.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

*squee* I cant wait!!! :D (though I dont wanna start talking about the finale already since we are only beginning to get the eppies today!!)

  • Rob

    oh em gee you guys!

  • Matt

I hope they bring up Sandy’s restraining order from Josh again… that was gold!

    • Ceballos

Just keep Josh away from Will’s mom – Josh Groban loves himself a blousy alcoholic.

      • Lady Pirate

Ausiello needs to read your comment and glean a spelling lesson from it.

  • Lindsay

Sounds hilarious. Josh was so funny in his first cameo. All of this “celebrities playing against type” stuff reminds me so much of Extras! Comedy ripe for the taking.

  • Ceballos

    I’m sure this’ll be funny, but…

…one of my ABSOLUTE favorite scenes from the first batch of episodes was the revelation the judges at sectionals ranged from clueless to lecherous to COMPLETELY uninterested. I enjoy the show a lot, but I also think the writing can be wildly uneven.

However, having these kids absolutely kill themselves to make it to Sectionals only to place their fate in the hands of a group of people who couldn’t care less was BRILLIANT and cruel.

I realize they couldn’t really replicate that, so I’m betting a celebrity panel will be fun in a different way.

I don’t care if Sue is a ‘national celebrity’ or not – no way she’d be allowed to judge with a team from her own school competing.

    • Johnification

You gotta figure that Sue, devious little witch that she is, was able to finagle her way up there somehow. Wile E. Coyote has the anvil all set to drop on the Road Runner…

    • KCatty

@CindyC– exactly. that just irritates me.

      • CindyC.

Thank you. It’s things like this that take this show out of reality for me and into fantastical ridiculousness. Why did Pushing Daisy’s get cancelled again?

    • JBW

I think Sue being a Judge is kind of funny. Sure, it’s probably not “realistic,” but I’m sure she found some way to weasel her way in there. However, if you’re going for a realistic show, Glee probably isn’t for you.

The thing that bugs me is that they have to have celebrities to Judge a regional competition? It would make more sense to me if it were Nationals.

      • Shizzle

We’re talking about the season finale here – that means that the show has weeks and weeks to build up to how exactly Sue becomes a judge for a competition that her school is competing in. Maybe she blackmails someone? I don’t like it either, though — I really can’t stand that woman.

  • Laura

Psst Ausiello, Josh GrobAn :) .

As far as this scoop, it has made me VERY happy lol.

  • Matt

I can’t wait to read about how the ratings for tonight’s episode plummet drastically after the first half-hour.. starting at 9:28 is a cheap ploy and will totally backfire!

    • Flyer

Perhaps they’ll BUILD in the second half-hour, after “Lost” ends. Since I want to see the whole episode intact, I’m going to have to wait until FOX posts it on their website. I’d really like a few choice words with the moron who decided to schedule “Glee” against “Lost.”

  • Josh

While I did like the cluess judges, I do think it makes sense that regionals would be a bit more famous. I just wish they were more one hit wonders then household names.

    • Shizzle

      Agreed!

  • den

Groban dear … with an ‘a’ not an ‘i’.
    ;o)

  • H

Why does ausiello get the byline on this when it was reported by someone else. Come on EW, contain his ego. I know you won’t get rid of him, but this is ridiculous, and disrespectful to Ms. Bell. Sadly, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this. It’d be one thing if it were “additional reporting by…”, but to have another reporter do all the work and have this chump slam his mug on it and take the credit? Ridiculous. Raise your standards, EW. You’re better than this, and so much better than Ausiello.

  • Bianca

When I read “Celeb Judges” my first thought was:

“How hilarious would it be if Simon Cowell was one of them?” :D

Can you imagine him calling Rachel’s performance ludicrous and refer to Kurt’s as atrocious?

Simon Cowell and Sue Silvester on the same judges’ panel.

    A girl can dream, can’t she? ;)

    • Kay

This indeed would be the judges from hell…. Sue Silvester and Simon Cowel…… The angels would weep!

  • ocnlvr83

I look forward to seeing Josh on the show again. He was the only reason I watched the show.

  • Megan

H- For the record if someone does the reporting, and Ausiello does the writing, it’s his article. It’s like a person quoting a source for an article.

  • annoyedreader

Love Glee…can’t wait. EW…I have a gripe…what is with your site? I click on almost any of the links to read the articles and get redirected to a dead “olivebrandresponse.com” page. This is getting very annoying!
