I think it’s clear that what the networks want and what genre shows deliver are not usually compatible. Genre shows tend to have small, loyal followings that do best (right now) on cable, where they can do their thing, and do it relatively cheaply (even if it means shorter seasons). The best shows in TV aren’t on the major networks now, they’re on cable. The networks want shows that cater to the broadest market. Firefly was never going to do that. I hate that it was canceled, but realistically the thing should have been on SciFi, FX or some other cable channel that would have been happy with its three or four million viewers per week. Eventually networks won’t have any scripted drama, just reality crap. Just look at the decent cable offerings: Breaking Bad, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Mad Men, Burn Notice, Dexter, Leverage, True Blood. Whedon should be making a show on FX or Showtime. Just imagine a Whedon show unencumbered by network politics. It’d be astounding.
I agree, Stargate Atlantis was much better, i miss it!
Defying Gravity Defies the Odds & ABC!!
Despite ABC’s failure to air the last five episodes, Defying Gravity made a clean sweep, earning nominations in every category for the Constellation Awards; no other show or film pulled this off.
Best Male Performance in a 2009 Science Fiction Television Episode
• Ron Livingston, for “Defying Gravity”, episode “Kiss”
Best Female Performance in a 2009 Science Fiction Television Episode
• Laura Harris, for “Defying Gravity”, episode “Kiss”
Best Science Fiction Television Series of 2009
• “Defying Gravity”
Best Technical Accomplishment in a 2009 Science Fiction Film or Television Production
• Stargate Studios, for visual effects in “Defying Gravity”
Best Overall 2009 Science Fiction Film or Television Script
• “Defying Gravity – Kiss”, written by James Parriott
Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Science Fiction Film or Television in 2009
• “Defying Gravity” – Series produced in Canada
Perhaps this illustrates a new trend in television development. One of the first multi-nationally produced shows DG was poorly advertised in one nation’s market, ABC United States, but earned support worldwide. Using new social media fans across the globe collaborated to get the show its proper recognition and demonstrated the possible error of that one nation’s promotion decisions. Their collaboration managed to make a clean sweep in Canada’s Constellation Awards; the nominations were solely based on fans votes.

You gys who cry about season 3 of lost actually know that it was hit by the riot of scenarist back at that time right ?
why do you think the season got so few episodes. it wasn’t because of public not wanting it, it wasn’t because of the network, it was the fault of the scenarist who decided to not work on it because tey weren’t paid enough. and thus they voluntarily did only half the season and voluntarily did bad scripts.
also why joss whedon created the horribles blog, to shows these guys how they didn’t need very big pay to get good things.
I’m glad to see people crediting the terrible delays in getting new episodes for the loss of viewers. Invasion on ABC was one of the best Sci-Fi shows in recent memory, and ABC just killed it by putting it on hiatus no less than four times, and during one of those times it even launched another show on. Fans were like, “is this show ever coming back?” The very next season, they said they would put on Lost in two installments — a fall and spring, and run them straight without interruption week-to-week. Smart move. Serialized Sci-Fi (and any serialized drama really) has to be treated like a special case and can’t be interrupted like other shows might be able to.
And for what it’s worth, I’m still not over Sarah Connor Chronicles either. I’d make a sizeable donation to help get that one back on the air and see what would’ve happened in a third season. Ugh.
