TNT orders third season of 'Southland'

southland-cop-dramaImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBCTNT announced that it has ordered a third season of Southland, the John Wells-produced police drama from Warner Bros. TV. The cable network has ordered 10 more episodes that will begin airing in January, 2011.

“Southland is a challenging, visceral show that engages viewers with its immersive style, provocative storylines, and complex characters,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming, for TNT, TBS, and Turner Classic Movies, in a statement.  “These qualities have made Southland a favorite among critics and appointment viewing for an extremely loyal audience.”

The series, which focuses on a police gang unit in Los Angeles and stars Ben McKenzie (The O.C.), Tom Everett Scott (Boiler Room), and Regina King (Jerry Maguire), first premiered on NBC in April 2009. After announcing that the critical favorite had been renewed for a second season, NBC abruptly canceled Southland last October. TNT then picked up six of the drama’s previously unseen episodes and began airing them in January.

    Awesome!

I love this show though I thought they didn’t handle the cliffhanger with Russell very well, he was just there after he was shot. The two officers John and Ben are by FAR the most interesting characters – I’m not a big fan of the detectives though, Regina King’s character is the worst of the bunch, I hope they get rid of her along with Sammy’s photographer wife

      • Elizabeth

John and Ben are definitely the best parts of the show. I could do without the detectives and esp. the wife. I like Regina King’s character, but more so the first season, less so the second.

      • Wills

I actually like Regina King’s character but I agree with you about Sammy’s wife, she totally sucks and is pretty much an idiot.

      • topher

You are so right about Sammy’s wife… those thugs should have killed her! I don’t even understand why her character is in this show.

      • Eric

Yeah, not sure why the wife is still around. I love Regina King’s character though.
I am so happy that this was renewed!

      • lorna

I like Regina King’s character, but Sammy’s wife is a total waste. So why did the cut down on Tom E. Scott? Love him and his character.

      • Anne

Regina King is my favorite actor on the show! Thrilled to get new episodes! The network blew it with this great show. Thanks TNT.

This is the best news I’ve gotten all day. I wish they would order more than a half to a dozen episodes each season though…where ‘Southland’ is concerned, there is no such thing as too much of a good thing

  • tvgirl48

While I hate that we have to wait so long for new episodes, I am beyond thrilled this show is living on. It’s a perfect addition to TNT.

  • Jenny

Best news I’ve heard all day. Smart move TNT.

    • tvfan

May it have a long run on TNT!

  • Kate

That is good news, I am a little confused though, I watched all the new TNT episodes and a good majority of the episodes once they started on TNT, but did I watch the full two first seasons of the show?

    • Mike

Yes. The first season (last spring on NBC) was 7 episodes. When NBC canceled the series, they had already filmed the first 6 episodes of the second season. When the show started airing on TNT this January, they replayed the first season, then aired the 6 new episodes as the “second season.” They didn’t add to the second season order because they were waiting for ratings results to decide what to do with the show. So altogether there have been 13 episodes over two seasons.

      • The Queen

How can we keep this show going?? Advice please!!

    • CJ

If you watched all episodes that aired on TNT then you watched seasons 1 and 2.

Thanks to TNT for doing what NBC could not — keep an excellent show in its programming.

    • kozmikg

The first season which first aired on NBC was only 7 eps. NBC decided not to air the first 6 eps of season 2 and production was shut down. I believe there was supposed to be 13 eps in season 2. TNT then stepped and aired them all (S1 & S2)consecutively for a total of 13 eps. Then judging by the ratings, fans, etc, TNT would decide to renew it for a third season. It’s weird, but am just glad they renewed it. Awesome show!!

  • tracy

Thankfully some people have great taste. Cant wait!

  • harry

    yeeeeeeesssssss!!!

  • Nick

While I do not watch this how and it really isn’t what I do watch, I’m happy to see TNT saving this show for the people who do like it. It kind of does the heart good to see it happen.

    • ET662

Now if they can only save Legend of the Seeker…..

      • Mysti

Southland is brilliant… definatley love ben and john the most… and oh yes! If ONLY they could save Legend of the Seeker…!!! That show is great too!

  • Dwayne

Best news ever!! Thank you TNT!!!

  • tracy

@ Kate, you have probably seen them all. The first season was cut short because it was dropped, so when TNT picked it up, they replayed all the old episodes and the 5 or 6 that never got aired and called that season 2.

  • Katy

    So excited! Thank you TNT!

  • Jenn

Smart move, TNT, on keeping a very smart show on the air. Thank you! Best news of the day!

  • Kara

Awesome news. I hope they keep it more like the first season with many stories going on. we didn’t see too much of a lot of characters on Season 2. But either way, I’ll be watching.

  • Hillary

    happy happy joy joy

  • RMW

    Thank you, TNT!

  • Kalie

I’m glad to hear this. NBC was stupid to drop this show, especially after they had already renewed it. Their loss is TNT’s gain.
