Image Credit: Adam Larkey/ABCNow that the 10th season of Dancing With the Stars is half over, EW.com asked host Tom Bergeron to weigh in about the show’s stellar ratings, the departure of Kate Gosselin, and the strange obsession with the word “bazooka.”
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It’s been a great season for the show. Would you give the credit, in part, to Kate Gosselin?
TOM BERGERON: No, clearly it’s because of me, Brooke Burke, and the judges. I don’t think there is any question! [He laughs.] I don’t think it was solely Kate. I think it’s been a really good cast and the numbers on Monday speak to the fact that even with Kate not being with us, the numbers are still holding up. In our last half hour, we were averaging 22 million people. We were wondering about that – with her off, would the ratings take a hit? And yet we still averaged over 20 million. There are a lot of good stories. You have Erin, Jake coming off The Bachelor, and Chad – an active player in the NFL. And Pamela Anderson, who we have been trying to get since season one. It’s just a very colorful lineup of people. We also went back to some basics. It looked like a spray-tan bus stop around here last season, there were so many people. I think we were a lot smarter with casting and tweaking the production this season.
You’ve been particularly great with the impromptu bons mots this season.
It’s a much happier sandbox when we’re all surfing these kinds of ratings. It’s easier to be in a really great mood when you come to work. And I love to improvise on the air.
Talk about the decision to keep the camera on Kate last week rather than go to her goodbye clip.
Well, it was a joint decision. I have an earpiece, so the producer was in my ear and said we didn’t have to air the piece – which was a great call, because we had really good television going on there, so why go to a videotape package if you’ve got something happening organically and live? I’ve had really good interactions with her. I have not met the Kate that I’ve read about in some places, the real difficult Kate. That’s not been my experience. When you saw her break down there, we got a little bit of insight into how she really cared about the show. It’s hard for her to get out there and perform the way Nicole and the others do.
Have you ever angered Len for teasing him after he just aggressively criticized a contestant?
We’re really good friends. I tend to pick on the people I’m closest with because I know they know it’s not personal. There will be times when Len will give an eviscerating review of somebody – he’ll honestly feel that he’s making valid points – but he’ll really go at someone. So then we’ll go to a commercial and he’ll look me with a little twinkle in his eye and say, `That was good, wasn’t it?’ Not to say that he doesn’t mean everything he says, but he knows – as we all do – that we are on a TV show.
Is there extra crew around to restrain Bruno if he climbs too high on the table? Or is that your job?
That’s pretty much my job, and I love it. It’s such a perfectly modulated trio, those three. Bruno is just all drama and flying metaphors.
Has Maks ever gone too far with his handsy treatment of you? He always finds a way to swat at your butt.
I know. It’s become a running joke. I gave him a copy of my book recently and I signed it, ‘Thank you for encouraging gorgeous women to grope me every week.’ If I have to endure his groping as a price for that, then I guess it’s the cross I have to bear. When it started with Mel B, my wife would be watching with her girlfriends, they’d say, ‘Do you want your husband to be groped by a Spice Girl?’ And she would say, ‘He is a professional and he knows what he’s doing.’
Do you feel sorry for the dancers who clearly can’t move as well as someone as trained as Nicole or Evan?
I think it’s gotta be tough. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. If I were one of the other stars, it would be tough because even when Nicole seems to be groping for the style – like this week when she thought it was going to be a salsa instead of a samba – when she came over last night I said, ‘You certainly seemed to have gotten over your anxieties.’ Because it was just an amazing dance. On the one hand, it sets the bar. And I think Maks and Erin really pulled out all the stops and came very close. If Len didn’t have that little British hair across his ass, it probably would have been even closer. They got two 9s and Len stuck up the 7 paddle. I think Erin and Maks have a real shot at an upset. I think as we get deeper in the competition that will be true of any of the remaining couples.
How’s it been working with Brooke?
It’s been great. She was part of the extended family anyway. That’s a tough gig, trying to elicit things out of the couples while their attention is elsewhere. They are either licking their wounds over having gotten beaten up by the judges, they are waiting for the scores, or they are just exhausted. I have the easy job. I can crack jokes and send them off. I don’t envy Brooke.
The dancers seem to catch Brooke off guard with their crazy comments. Pam quipped Monday night about wanting to always be on top.
Yeah, what are you going to say to that? `Well, you should try being on the bottom! Flip through Kama Sutra, there are all kinds of places you can be. Don’t get in a rut, Pamela!’ You can’t say that on the air!
There’s certainly been a lot of talk about bazookas this season.
It started when Len said something to Niecy about moving your bazookas, and I ad-libbed, ‘Why don’t you head over to Brooke’s bazooka boutique?’ I thought, ‘I’m gonna hear about that again.’ But it’s hardly a bazooka-free zone here.

I’m glad kate is gone, and I really do enjoy the show more now. Tom is very funny and balances the judges’ opinions at the best times
I agree w/ Leslie, the show is so much better without Kate. Didn’t watch it with her on, she is a disgrace to motherhood. Using her kids to make money, having a body guard for herself, what about the kids. She is selfish!!
Tom is a great host, and is genuinely funny, unlike a certain smarmy dork on a fading show…
The producers couldn’t have picked a better host than Tom Bergeron. He’s great.
Yes, I LOVE Tom Bergeron! DWTS would not be as successful as it is without him, I’m absolutely positive. I certainly wouldn’t enjoy it as much. He’s both funny and kind, and generally just seems like a really nice guy. I totally have a platonic crush on him, if such a thing exists. I mean…I am happily married, and it sounds like he is too, but his humor and decency makes him just the kind of guy I find myself attracted to, despite a bit of an age difference between us! AND he’s made America’s Funniest Home Videos watchable again, which is no small task after some of the hosts they had before him. Go Tom!
Agree 100%!
Besides being hilarious, Tom Bergeron is an entertainer who is graceous, humble, and quick witted. He delivers some great comebacks to the judges critiques, is very solid as the show leader, and a wonderful host of the dancing stars competition. One simple, humble and powerful thing he has done every time DWTS has come up number one in total tv viewers for the week is acknowledge the audience and thank the viewers for making the show the #1 program on tv. Nice touch but I wouldn’t expect anything less from someone with such tremendous character and esteem.
Tom is a credit to the show.
He is funny and respectful of contestants.
I remember how he responded to one of the judges when one of them said Shawn Johnson wasn’t as seductive as she should be in a dance:”She’s only 18!”-showing a protective fatherly side.
His extra time speaking with Kate when she was eliminated was precious, he’s a sensitive guy (but I really thought Kate should have never even been on the show).
He always has a kind work for a couple who get reprimands from the judges and who do not deserve it.
He’s the whole package: extraordinary announcer, funny guy, ad lb king, sensitive, protective-he is an exceptional host.
Oh, I forgot to mention how he always acknowledges the band leader, the singers, the band members, the professional dancers, and the special guests. What a nice gesture.
He is the best professional announcer around-I give him a 10!
All this talk about how great this cast is because the ratings are so high, and how overstuffed the cast was last fall. But am I the only one who really doesn’t care for much of this cast? Last season had a lot of stars and the most number of good dancers. They got higher scores and earned them.
I totally agree with you. Every time I hear Tom or one of the judges say that this is the best cast ever, I just say, “huh?” I personally think it is one of the worst.
they say that every year!
I love Tom. Case in point: “No, clearly it’s because of me, Brooke Burke, and the judges.” He cracks me up!
What a fun interview!
This season just sucks. The people suck and the dancing sucks. We are halfway through and the highest was a 29. I thought last season was the worst I have seen because all it was a popularity contest but this season is just aweful. It’s NOT a dance show anymore. Its a popularity contest and it’s not right.
It has always been a popularity contest, the quality of the dancing is secondary. Nothing has changed. This season is much better than the last which had way too many celebraties and gimmicks.
someone get tom his talk show! the man is funny, smart and authentic.
GO CHAD OCHOCINCO!!!
Mr. Bergeron should really get the Emmy for Reality Show host. While I admire Probst on Survivor, his show is taped and what we see of him is edited. Tom, on the other hand, is LIVE and is a master at handling anything and everything that happens live. He should win (although it still bugs me that he beat Regis at the Daytime Emmys during the heyday of Millionaire…)
Excellent point about Tom handling things LIVE, where anything can happen! He’s the perfect host funny, quick-witted and caring!
I’ve been thinking that for several years. Love Jeff, but Tom doesn’t have the benefit of editing to help him look brilliant. He just is brilliant!
Is that really Brooke Burke or is it a robot? Will she (it) go the entire season without making an intelligent or witty comment? What a terrible choice for co-host. Bring back smarmy Samantha.
John, are you gay? She is stunningly gorgeous, and is very smooth and at ease as she interviews. I love her!
Every time she interviews Nicole about Derek, she ends it with some version of “I can relate to that.” Brooke, we remember you had him first.
Are you kidding me? Samantha was a disgrace to all TV hosts the world over. She thought she was a lot funnier than she really was and you can only take so much of her deep “man voice” laughing. Plus she was totally unoriginal.
I am SO glad Gosselin is gone.DWTS is gone back (since Gosselin left)to a fun and exciting show. Any drama and tears on the show currently are real and heartfelt and the show is now about ALL of the contestants that deserve to be there-I hope we do not keep hearing her name the rest of the season-She is off-Give the current contestants the time they deserve.
Brooke is “ok” as a host but why doesn’t someone teach her how to stand up straight. She wrecks the looks of the beautiful dresses she wears with a posture that looks like a pretzel.
Maybe she looks like a pretzel since her first job was making pretzels! Bah duh dum! (Saw it on Oprah the other day!)
Love Tom, love the show, and especially love that now both Kate and Jake are gone.
I must say I do envy Tom. I’d love to get fondled by Maks on a weekly basis!! meow!
