Image Credit: Paul Drinkwater/NBCNBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced today that the Emmy-winning Ricky Gervais (The Office) will return as host of the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Jan 16 on NBC. The show will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from 5-8 p.m. (PT) and 8-11 p.m. (ET) from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.
“I can’t believe they invited me back after awful things I said,” said Gervais in a statement. “Let’s see how far I can go this time.”
“As viewers discovered with our last awards telecast, Ricky’s surprising and unpredictable humor is a great fit for the Globes, which will continue as a live event across the nation,” continued Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, NBC and Universal Media Studios. “He’s a true force of nature with a wicked sense of humor who always keeps everyone on their toes waiting for the unexpected.”
This year’s Golden Globes telecast on Jan. 17 attracted NBC’s largest non-sports viewership in the time period in six years (17 million) and posted gains of 12 percent in adults 18-49 (5.4 vs. 4.9) and 14 percent in total viewers versus the previous year’s show.

Problem is, he’s not humorous. He’s just an idiot. Trust the Globes to invite him again because they need people desperate to see a TV train wreck to get any viewership at all.
You’re an idiot!
I agree jason
A TV train wreck is someone like kate gosselin or the octomom. Not a man who co-created two extremely funny shows and an equally entertaining series of podcasts.
totally agree jen. he wasn’t offensive or funny, just disappointing
Not Funny? I almost fell out of my chair with “I like a drink as much as the next man… unless the next man is Mel Gibson.” (Mel Gibson proceeds to walk on stage to present) Tell me a funnier intro than that
RG is the funniest guy on the planet. go watch The Office (the real version) and you’ll know. I hope he does the David Brent dance at the next GGs.
Why? He’s not funny and the GG’s were better when there was no host. That is one of the many reasons that it was unique and different from other awards shows.
He was shocking, hilarious and I like it that he didn’t play it safe! I can’t wait to watch next year.
Why? He wasn’t even that funny.
He’s better than you Jen.
Last year was the first Golden Globes I’ve ever watched and that was only becuase Gervais hosted.
I’ve never had any respect for the Golden Globes. The voting commitee is made up of less than a hundred foreign media correspondents, and I’ve always suspected they give awards to stars based more on their interview accessibilty than their acting ability.
I hope he gets to bring out Stephen Merchant. And they get to shamelessly plug Cemetery Junction. Why hasn’t this film been given a release date in the US?!?
I think Gervais is a brilliant comedian, although I thought he was mostly OK as the Globes host. Granted, he was hardly given any time since the show was consistently running late from the very beginning.
I know this is nitpicking, but most would list eastern time before pacific time – I dunno why I found that such an unshakable peeve. BUT LOVE GERVAIS – he’s the only reason I watched the Globes this year. He really should host the Oscars.
Awesome news.
I was also slightly disappointed with his performance, but that’s because I’ve seen how hilarious he can be.
I guarantee he will be a lot more comfortable next time around. He should kill it.
#1 podcast ever – Ricky, Steve, and Karl. They Rock. I’ll be watching the Globes for Ricky, no matter who is nominated.
