Exclusive First Look: TBS' 'Neighbors From Hell'

Categories: First Look, Scoop

nfh_familyImage Credit: TBSIn TBS’ new animated series Neighbors From Hell (debuting June 7), a family from the underworld — where Satan tortures his wards with endless reruns of bad TV — comes to live among mortals and faces an even ruder awakening. “They think everything will be like a sitcom,” explains series creator Pam Brady. “They look around and realize the real neighbors from hell are humans in the suburbs.” So what would be playing in Brady’s personal vision of hell? “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” she says. “On a constant loop.” (Keith Staskiewicz)

Joss Whedon on state of sci-fi: 'Many good shows are canceled early'

Categories: Glee, Sci-Fi, Television

Joss Whedon — who’s now enjoying his temporary status as a Gleek for having directed a May episode that guest stars Neil Patrick Harris — is in no mood to eulogize the state of the sci-fi genre on TV right now, mostly because he doesn’t think it’s necessary. “When a show works, it works. When they don’t, they don’t,” he said Monday night at a Glee premiere party. “It has nothing to do with whether they are genre or not and sometimes it doesn’t even matter if they are good. Many good TV shows have been canceled way too early. It goes in waves and we have to figure out how to ride them and sometimes you wipe out. We are surfers not prognosticators. Certainly some blame can be placed on studios and networks who don’t nurture shows or give them time to catch on.”

As for directing a upcoming episode of Glee, Whedon confesses the Fox dramedy is “the hardest show to shoot on all of television” but he loved the experience. ”I have actually gone from fan to stalker which is weird because I am friends with them,” Whedon said. “I had such a good time and I actually knew most of the songs in the episode so I didn’t feel old and out of it. They handed me the script and the songs and that allowed me to just be a director. I just got to be a director trying to make an episode of Glee that was not worse than all the ones I love. I want to do it again sometime.”

Glee insider told The Ausiello Files that Whedon’s episode will feature flashback scenes that show the popular Bryan ”picking up all the girls and getting the solos” while geeky Will ”sits off in the sidelines.” The stage for a present-day rematch is set when Harris’ character — now a board member at William McKinley High — announces his intent to cut the arts programs at the school. ”Show choir ruined his life, made him feel he could be a star, but all he could do is book Carnival cruises,” explains the source. ”Now he wants vengeance.”  -With reporting from Carrie Bell

'24' exclusive: The real story behind last night's killer episode!

Categories: 24, Scoop

24Image Credit: Kelsey McNeal/FoxSpoiler alert: If you have yet to watch last night’s 24, stop reading now. Everyone else, onward and downward!

Last night, yet another of Jack’s love interests bit the dust, this time his female counterpart, Renee. And while the outta-nowhere tragedy will no doubt spin our hero off into another vengeance-seeking spiral, I’ve got questions. Lots of questions. Like, was the decision to whack her made before or after the show’s recent cancellation? How did her portrayer, Annie Wersching, take the news? And most importantly, why was she killed?! Exec producer Howard Gordon phoned me to answer all of the above, and he tackled another burning mystery as well: Who determines how many minutes it takes for Jack to make love to a woman? George Lopez on Conan O'Brien: Working an hour later is 'a Latino dream come true'

During today’s taping of TBS’ Lopez Tonight, host George Lopez addressed the big news of the day that Conan O’Brien would join the network come November and how the surprise move would usher in “the next generation of late night TV.”

“If you haven’t heard by now, Conan O’Brien will be joining us on late night on TBS. Welcome! Welcome!” according to an early transcript of the show, released by TBS. “I want to say that I am completely 100% on board with this move.  I talked to Conan on Wednesday and I talked to him last night and I said I welcome you into my deep loving embrace. Then I said let’s take the party and make it bigger … everybody’s heard of ‘I’m with CoCo’ but now everybody can ‘Go LoCo’.”

The O’Brien hire also provided lots of comedy fodder for Lopez’ guest, Chris Rock. Here’s a sampling of his exchange with Lopez:

Lopez: “I think you’re here on a good night…with Conan coming to TBS…”
Rock: “Conan’s coming?  Where are you going?”
Lopez: “I’m staying.  I’m going to midnight.  He’s coming at eleven o’clock and I’m going to midnight.”
Rock: “Get the hell out of here!  So you’re gonna move for the white man, huh?  I hope he appreciates this.”
Lopez: “I think the white man does appreciate it very much.”
Rock: “You don’t gotta clean a park or nothing, right?”
Lopez: “No and I get to go to work an hour later.  That’s a Latino dream come true.”

Writer/director Bill Condon (Kinsey, Dreamgirls) and Tell Me You Love Me creator Cynthia Mort are shepherding the project.

Kevin Eubanks confirms he's leaving Jay Leno's side

jay-leno-kevin-eubanksImage Credit: Leno: NBC; Eubanks: Everett CollectionKevin Eubanks made it official during today’s taping of The Tonight Show by announcing he will leave the late night talk show in six weeks. Back in February, NBC confirmed that Eubanks was ready to step aside after serving 18 years as Jay Leno’s music director.

After doing his “Headlines” segment, Leno called Eubanks to the couch and announced how “we have one more headline to get to and it involves our very own Kevin Eubanks.”

“After 18 years, I just need a change of pace and see what else is going on,” Eubanks said. ” But it’s a really difficult decision because this has become my second home, as it has been for the band, and I love the audience and the American people really love the show and it’s been a wonderful experience to be here.”

“It has been a pleasure,” Leno said.  “You’ve been a great friend and really supportive.  When those jokes die, I gotta look to you man.”

“I thought about this and it wasn’t that difficult,” replied Eubanks. ” After 18 years of playing America in to commercials, I’m gonna go somewhere where I can finish a song.”

TBS honcho on snagging Conan O'Brien: 'He can do whatever he wants to do here'

conan-obrienImage Credit: Jay Brady/Everett CollectionIn one of the best-kept secrets of the TV season, TBS managed to close a late-night deal with Conan O’Brien without anyone catching wind of it. EW talked to Turner Entertainment Networks President Steve Koonin about giving O’Brien the opportunity to own his own talk show on the cabler, which skews young and reaches more than 100 million homes.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Conan O’Brien was out of job back in January. The network release said you only reached out to him a week ago. Why did it take so long?
STEVE KOONIN:
I don’t want to sound too goofy and cosmic, but we just got inspired by the idea when we did our planning. We had read it was Fox Fox Fox all along, and then we saw there might be a crack. So we said, “Let’s take a look at this.” We took a very objective look. We saw how both the talent and the audience for broadcast network has gotten a lot older. The talent is in their 60s, and the audience is almost the same. The shining characteristic of George Lopez’s show is that the average age is 33. How cool would it be to have two guys in their 40s talk to viewers in their 20s and 30s on our network for the next decade? That literally was the inspiration two weeks ago. READ FULL STORY »
