Categories: Bones, Scoop

Relax, Bones fans. Take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay. Although it seemed like tonight’s 100th episode forever closed the door on a Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) relationship  — she basically rejected his romantic overture; see Mandi Bierly’s detailed Bones recap — the show’s producers insist the opposite is true. Oprah Winfrey announces OWN slate, includes her new traveling talk show

Categories: Deals, Television, TV Biz

Oprah Winfrey will soon be out of daytime but she won’t stop hosting her own show. The Queen of Daytime made it official today by announcing that the Oprah Winfrey Network, launching Jan. 1, will also include Oprah’s Next Chapter, a new one-hour show that will feature Winfrey hitting the road to have “more riveting conversations with the people we all want to hear from, in some very unexpected places.” The show, from Harpo Prods., was one of five new series announced today to advertisers in New York, including Visionaries: Inside the Creative Mind; Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star; Gayle King Live!, and Why Not? With Shania Twain.

“My vision for OWN is to create a network that inspires our viewers and makes them want to be who they are on their best day,” Winfrey said. Added Christina Norman, CEO of OWN, “We want to provide our audience with the tools to awaken, become more alive, and connect to what really matters to them in a fun, engaging, and entertaining way.”

Winfrey’s decision to host a new show for OWN was a no-brainer, says Adam Hanft, a branding and marketing expert. “They don’t have a choice. How could they not have her do a talk show? But they tried not to recreate the same environment. She is going to travel around to different places and try to inject some fresh content that doesn’t feel stale and re-heated.”

As for maintaining the winning ratings she currently enjoys with her daytime yakker, Hanft says,  “she’s got a tremendously loyal following, but I don’t think she’ll bring anybody new to the cable show. But I think it will do fine.”

Ultimately, OWN will make it or break based on the quality of the overall programming, Hanft said, not just whether Winfrey hosts her own show. Other programs that have already been announced for OWN’s launch in January include Breaking Down the Bars (a one-hour show that goes inside prison walls); In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman (a show featuring a sex therapist); Inside with Lisa Ling (an investigative series); and Searching (a show that attempts to reunite long-lost friends and family members.)

'All My Children' snags Michael Nouri to play Erica Kane nemesis

michael-nouriImage Credit: Martin Roe/RetnaABC announced today that Michael Nouri (Brothers & Sisters, Damages) will join the cast of All My Children. He’ll play the role of Caleb McGraw, a man who Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) encounters after her airplane crashes into his remote, mountainside home. As a result, Nouri’s character is in no mood to help the diva while she fends for herself in the forest.

Nouri’s first airdate is May 24. “We look forward to working with Mr Nouri as he uses his vast experience and talent to bring the unique and complex character of Caleb McGraw to life,” says executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers in a statement.

Kate Gosselin to star in TLC's new 'Twist of Kate'

With Kate Gosselin’s popularity (or is it notoriety?) giving Dancing With the Stars its best ratings ever, TLC announced that it will stay in the mom-of-eight business by launching Twist of Kate sometime this summer. The new series will follow Gosselin as she travels the country to meet families with challenges at work or at home and attempt to “walk a mile in their shoes,” according to a TLC statement. The show will also give Gosselin a chance to “roll up her sleeves and see what she can to do to help.”

Gosselin’s brood won’t necessarily be the focus – especially since TLC is debuting two other shows about couples who go home with large families, including the Carpio Family Project (about a New York City couple with 18-month sextuplets in addition to an 8-year-old son) and Quintuplet Surprise (about a young Texas couple who have a 6-year-old daughter and five newborns). Gosselin, however, will star in a series of Kate Plus 8 specials that will focus on her complicated home life.

Meanwhile, ABC must have let out a huge sigh of relief when it was Buzz Aldrin – not the low-scoring Gosselin — who got the boot on Monday from DWTS. Gosselin is definitely having an impact on the ratings for the uber-reality show, which finished the week of March 29 as the most-watched TV show for the first time ever. It outranked both weekly installments of American Idol and, in fact, was the first regular TV series in five years to draw more viewers than both editions of Idol.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Lost,' 'Glee,' 'Sons of Anarchy,' 'Supernatural,' 'House,' and more!

Question: After the “Happily Ever After” episode of Lost, I no longer believe that Sawyer and Kate will be happening. If they were, they would have had an epiphany in the elevator scene in sideways world from the “LA X” episode. But they didn’t. Care to comment? —Caroline
Ausiello:
I have no solid information to back up your theory, but I’ll admit it’s a good one. Speaking of destiny and fate and all that jazz, an unlikely romance will take shape in early May. Normally I’d tell you to start speculating in the comments section but there’s really no point. You’ll never guess this one. Trust me.

Question: Ugly Betty is ending in a week — please spoil us one last time before the finale! —Miagkaia
Ausiello:
I ran into executive producer Sheila Lawrence at the show’s wrap party last week and here’s what she had to say about next Wednesday’s swan song: “Every character ends up in a good place — this is Ugly Betty after all,” she teased. “Amanda has a question answered that’s been looming since Season 2, Justin has a dream come true, and Wilhelmina quite possibly has the happiest ending of all.”

Question: Aus, I gave up EW.com for Lent. Have I missed anything huge? Or better, do you have anything to welcome me back with? —Laura
Ausiello:
Hugh Laurie directs Monday’s House and, to mark the occasion, he’s giving Ask Ausiello readers this exclusive preview: “A baby goes missing from the maternity ward — you know how babies are low-jacked in the hospital these days — so the hospital is locked down until the baby is found. It’s a rather more elegant way of doing the ‘stuck elevator’ plot line.” Oh, wait, you asked for big news. Um… Dean [spoiler] [spoiler] in Supernatural‘s 100th episode next Thursday! 'V' and 'FlashForward' ratings: Tough times for the sci-fi genre

vImage Credit: Jack Rowand/ABCFans of science fiction who don’t want to see the genre fizzle out on network TV should start tuning into ratings-starved shows like V and FlashForward. ABC’s alien drama starring Elizabeth Mitchell hit a series low 2.5 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 last night after opening with a first-place 2.8/8 last week. The drama only retained 66 percent of its lead-in from Lost, which finished its time slot with a 3.8/10. The news was just as bad for FlashForward’s third outing last week: ABC’s Thursday drama dropped to a series low 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 and a mere 5.0 million viewers, down from the prior week’s 1.8 and 6.2 million.

Lost isn’t necessarily breaking records, either – at least, not good ones. The drama was at a season low last night and down significantly from its Feb. 2 debut (a 5.5 rating in 18-49). Still, the heavily-serialized drama continues to attract a valuable and rabid fanbase, which is catnip for advertisers. And the audience is sure to return in anticipation of the show’s finale on May 23.

Meanwhile, the reception for the April 1 return of Fringe wasn’t particularly dramatic; it earned a 2.2/7 in 18-49 and attracted 5.8 million viewers, down 33 percent and 25 percent, respectively, from last year when it ran on far less competitive Tuesdays. It is still boosting Fox’s performance in the Thursday time slot by 10 percent in viewers, however, which is why the show earned a third season pickup.

'Grey's Anatomy' exclusive: The complete Katherine Heigl Q&A

katherine-heigl-ausielloImage Credit: ANDREW ECCLES FOR EWBy popular demand (mostly from our international readers who don’t have access to Entertainment Weekly), here’s the version of my Katherine Heigl Q&A that ran in the magazine…

Note to Janet Jackson: This is how you do a wardrobe malfunction. As she took the stage to accept ShoWest’s Female Star of the Year award on March 18 in Las Vegas, Katherine Heigl was about to address the elite showbiz crowd when the left strap on her Donna Karan dress snapped. Luckily, the 31-year-old actress caught the flimsy garment before her, ahem, girls could be exposed, and she stood there with her frock in tatters and gave her speech. “What was I going to do?” shrugs Heigl the following day, from the comfort of the modest yet meticulous home she shares with her husband, musician Josh Kelley, and their 16-month-old daughter, Naleigh, in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. “I wasn’t going to stop the show and make everyone wait while somebody tries to find a way to pin it. I decided to just go for it.” It turned out to be one of her smartest PR moves. The incident — in which she came off looking vulnerable, relatable, and sympathetic — earned her some of the best press of her career at a time when she needed it the most. And as she recounts the experience, it’s clear that she appreciated the timing of the tension reliever as well. As Entertainment Weekly first reported, Heigl is leaving her role as Dr. Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy in much the same way she spent her six-year stint on the show: amid controversy. After sitting out more than half of this season, both to make a movie — the romantic comedy Life as We Know It — and to bond with the special-needs child she and Kelley adopted from South Korea last September, Heigl was due back on the set of the ABC drama on March 1. But she never showed up. It was the latest bump in a rocky tenure that’s been marred by numerous skirmishes. The fact that she’s bailing on the show that made her a household name, eight months after solidifying herself as a box office draw (in The Ugly Truth) and 18 months before her contract was up, only reinforced the perception that she’s a selfish diva. But on this day, we encountered a very different Heigl. Dressed casually in capri jeans and a purple cardigan, with her newly darkened locks pulled back, the actress curled up on the sectional on her second-floor terrace with a glass of wine, ready to explain, clarify, and, yes, apologize.

Where do things stand with Grey’s Anatomy? Are you done?
KATHERINE HEIGL:
I am done. We just finalized our agreement. Everyone had been working really hard to find an amicable and gracious way of letting go and moving on. It’s sad, but it’s what I wanted.

How did it come to this?
HEIGL:
My life changed so dramatically in the last six years. I started a family, and it changed everything for me. It changed my desire to work full-time. READ FULL STORY »
