'Moonlight' reruns head to CW this summer

moonlightImage Credit: Robert VoetsThis may or may not be the greatest news for Moonlight fans who have probably seen every last episode anyway: The CW announced today that it’ll air reruns of the old CBS show beginning June 3. The Alex O’Loughlin drama about a vampire who works as a private investigator will air on Thursdays after repeats of The Vampire Diaries.

It’s not unheard of for the CW to air an off-network series in its prime time lineup. Previously, the CW aired reruns of Jericho during the 2008-09 season and comedies like Reba and The Wayans Bros. from 3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays. (It also aired The Drew Carey Show in the 5 to 7 p.m. block on Sundays.) Picking up the Moonlight reruns makes sense; the drama — which aired for only one season on CBS — is produced by Warner Bros., which co-owns the CW with CBS. It’s also is the perfect companion to Vampire Diaries, this season’s breakout hit for the CW. Warner Bros. TV produced 16 episodes of the drama before it was canceled.

While Moonlight fans are likely still mourning the loss of their favorite CBS drama, O’Loughlin has moved on to greener pastures: He’s been cast opposite Daniel Dae Kim in CBS’ reboot of Hawaii Five-O. He plays Det. Steve McGarrett in the pilot, which is up for consideration for fall.

That’s great! Hopefully, some Vampire Diaries fans will get a chance to see how great Moonlight is. I know there is no hope for the future of this show but it really would have been great if CW had been smart enough to pick Moonlight up when they had they chance. This would have been a great combo. Pity. Anyway, I’ll make sure to tune in.

I don’t know if this makes me happy or furious. Why the hell didn’t the CW pick up Moonlight after CBS foolishly canceled it? It could have been a giant hit for the CW then — now just filler for The Vampire Diaries. Alex has moved on and so has the rest of the cast. So is it better late than never? You tell me.

    • Brett

They probably didn’t pick it up because it doesn’t feature teenagers or kids in their 20′s.

    • Lynne

ITA. Some kind of perverse anniversary present. May 12, 2008 was a devastating day for the ML fans. :( (

  • laura

I would have jump with joy over the news but it is kind of a yr to late. CW should have SAVED Moonlight and then I would have been over CW!

    • laura

oops meant to say ‘ all over CW ‘

  • Lindsay

Maybe Hawaii Five-0 will be cancelled and they’ll pick up new episdoes of Moonlight! I wasn’t a fan when it aired but I’m totally onboard now.

  • Kyle

I remeber that they aired the other cancelled CBS show “Jericho” in the sunday slot back when they aired on sundays!!!

  • Meg

    Best news I never expected.

  • Jose

Will this get in the way of Supernatural reruns?

    • amy

No, they are moving Supernatural reruns to Friday nights after Smallville. I am guessing that is where the show will stay next season.

      • Brian

I hope it does stay on Fridays next season. SV held down the night well, but every little bit helps.
Plus, then I’d be able to watch the Office when it actually airs instead of waiting a day.

  • Diane

I can’t think of anything TV needs less than Hawaii Five-O again. Fingers crossed that it tanks and Moonlight gets another shot. Barring that-maybe if they recasted it?

    • Linda

It’s mean and pathetic to wish failure for Alex. Moonlight fanatics need to grow up. ML was a great show, but Alex is capable of much more. His true fans have moved on with him. I wish him much luck with Hawaii Five-O.

    What about Supernatural?

    • Viewer

YEAH! AND WHAT ABOUT CHUCK!?!? ANY FINN AND RACHEL SCOOP?! CHUCK! GLEE! I HAVE NO LIFE!

      • Wilson

        Seriously “Viewer?”

They’re talking about the fact that Supernatural usually runs its reruns at 9 on Thursday. This could get in the way of that, and some people didn’t get to see it when it was new due to Thursday nights being so full of big hits.

      • Brian

Supernatural is moving to Friday nights after Smallville, at least for the summer.

  • Faye

I strongly agree with the first 3 posts. Actually almost 2 years too late. This would have been so much better if the CW had picked it up then. While I wasn’t overjoyed about Alex signing up for Hawaii Five-0, as a true fan I want the show to be a success. I don’t want a recasting of Moonlight since Alex was Mick. A movie might be nice.

  • Brett

When “Hawaii Five-0″ gets canceled, O’Loughlin will be free to make “Backup Plan 2.”

    • Lynne

      LOL. You crack me up!

BUP#2 has a nice ring to it.

  • Tina

Well I will watch the reruns even if I have 5 Moonlight DVDs.About that Hawaii remake, not interested at all. Boring!.The best for Alex but I won’t be watching that one.Sorry!

  • pinlady

This total nonsense, like it didnt hurt when the cancelled the show, they just have to remind us how good it was and how we are never gonna now what happens between mick and beth. I think this is a bad idea and honestly a bit mean

  • thesnowleopard

I find that rather sad, as I like watching Supernatural reruns and have zero interest in Moonlight, but whatever. I know I’ll be watching something else–probably my copies of Supernatural–until that show returns in the fall.

I have a feeling this will end up like the experiment with running Reaper in the same slot, only worse. I know that Moonlight had its fans, but reruns of a canceled show are still reruns of a canceled show and aren’t likely to get better ratings than reruns of a still-popular one, just because the previous show is about vampires.

Is the CW even still in business?
