'Lie to Me' showrunner exits; drama's future uncertain

The fate of Fox’s Lie to Me is unknown but the show’s head writer-cum-executive producer isn’t sticking around to find out whether the crime drama is coming back in the fall. Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit) used his Twitter account Friday to explain why he’s leaving the struggling series that stars Tim Roth and Kelli Williams. ”I had a great year working on the show and helped develop a team that’s ready for more responsibility,” he wrote. “Time for me to go …When I took gig, I had things in development, nothing in production. Now with Terriers and possibly Ride-Along, too much work.”

Terriers is a drama about private investigators that Ryan is developing for FX while Ride-Along is an ensemble cop show that’s up for fall consideration at Fox. “As for timing, this allows studio time to give network succession plan to increase odds of pickup,” Ryan continued via Twitter. “Still very excited to show you 12 episodes we have in the can. The great Howard Hessman guest stars in one of them.” He goes on to tease that Melissa George (Grey’s Anatomy) will guest star for three episodes.

Lie to Me returns to Fox’s schedule on June 7.

Fox should pick up Legend of the Seeker to replace it – pair it up with FRINGE and HUMAN TARGET and they will corner the geek market for sure

    • Chappel

      That works for me.

    • Brett

      Give it up, already.

      • lyman

you don’t need the comma after ‘up’

    • Johnification

      Now it’s just spam, buddy.

    • Bob

Seeker ain’t coming back. Time to get a life.

  • motbones

This sucks. First CBS runs Ryan out and cancels the Unit now this. Hopefully Fox will keep the show going regardless. It’s a great show, it would be a shame to see it go.

I can watch eps over-and-over (a rare thing). Tim Roth is utterly brilliant and facinating to watch. Shame if we don’t get a S3 but two seasons of wowness is not to be sniffed at. Just give Tim Roth another series, and one for Damian Lewis (Life) too. :)

Never watched it. For those who did take hope, this is Fox we’re talking about. They inevitably cancel good shows with decent ratings (24, the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse) and keep those with plummeting ones (the Cleveland Show). They’re capable of keeping this.

    • Silent Rage

I loved Dollhouse but lets be realistic, the ratings were horrible

      • Ange

i loved dollhouse too, why is it fox gets rid of good stuff???? other companys seem to know who will keep the “punters”

    • Brett

24 canceled because it had become too expensive and the producers ran out of ideas. Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse had terrible ratings.

      • Jay

24 is so over. I used to be a huge fan, but this years obviously proved it’s time to let it go.

I think House also proves that Fox doesn’t care for creativity – one of the most boring shows of the year, nothing new, same old concept… But Fox keeps it cause the ratings are good.

This is sad! Ilove this picture…..

  • Lewifex

LTM is definitely top class in the league of House MD, we have grown to love it & make it part of our evenings & worklife. It would be a shame to see it fade or even be diluted

  • Kathy B

It’s a mistake for Fox to let this go. It has the potential to grow its audience over time. You don’t need to have been watching it all along.

  • Preston

He’s producing 3 shows at one time? I’m sure he’s stressed out and wants to stick with two. And Lie To Me didn’t have strong ratings last year. I think that Fox will stick with Human Target and ditch Lie since Target performed far better than Lie in that same Wednesday time slot in late winter and early spring. And Mark Valley is more interesting than Tim Roth’s menacing look.

    • Ryan

umm pretty sure HT actually did worse than what Lie to Me did last spring. Yes HT usually one or was on top of the time slot but the ratings were not at all better than Lie To Me’s.

  • jewels

I absolutely love Lie To Me…I am watching these again in rerun and am keeping my fingers crossed that there will be more new episodes to follow this fall! Maybe another network would be willing to pick it up? ie: Medium??

  • Molly

If this show gets cancelled, i’m DONE with Fox. They’ve cancelled way too many of my favorite shows.

  • Silent Rage

Another Shawn Ryan show on FX would be great, take Ride Along with you Fox will just Joss Whedon you.

    • Billy

      They’re the same people.

  • nisa

i really love lie to me.I’ am disappointed with this.

  • 3rdrocker

Lie to Me was fine without Shawn Ryan before. He didn’t make or break the show, so out with Uncle Fester and bring on season 3!! I won’t be watching any of his other shows because of this. Effin’ traitor.

  • Jerri

As a Lie to Me fan, this news sucks. :( I hope they renew the show anyway. NCIS did very well after Donald P Bellisario left.

those of you who want 24 back…Give it up…. 24 ran out of ideas a loooooooooong time ago.

  • Victoria

I will cry if FOX cancels “Lie to Me” as it is the best show EVER! I have seen every episode at least twice and still find myself popping in the DVDs of Season 1 when I have free time. Please FOX, give it some time to gain viewers. Oh, and it would help if you promoted the show! I’m just saying.
