'Lost': Will we see Mr. Eko again?

Mr-EkoSorry, Mr. Eko fans: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje will not be staging a comeback to Lost. Though the producers wanted to find a reason to bring back the former tailie, EW has learned that a deal could not be reached in time. Akinnuoye-Agbaje had indicated a strong desire to return to the drama that made a big impact on his career: In August, the British actor told EW that “fans of Mr. Eko should have hope” and that he loved playing the character.

“I’m here for [the producers],” Akinnuoye-Agbaje continued. “Adewale is open for business. We have had talks about some things they might do for the final season and there are other dead folks coming back allegedly but at the moment it is still a maybe. A strong maybe but I have not shot anything yet or signed any contracts. But I’m hoping.”

Akinnuoye-Agbaje was the first castaway to vote himself off the island in season three.

There is one other Lost alum who fans would love to see resurface – Julie Bowen, who played Matthew Fox’s former wife Sarah. Speculation of her possible comeback hit a fever pitch in March when Bowen and the cast of Modern Family traveled to Maui to shoot a vacation episode. The thought was that Bowen would use her down time to hop a plane to Hawaii, but Lost insiders won’t comment on whether the actress pulled a little tropical double-duty.

Eko’s death was the worst thing to happen on Lost

    • Louise

      Agreed!

      • james

        The worst thing? No way

      • Jack

I have to disagree. That stupid Wile E. Coyote Death for Ilana was the low point for me. Arzst was one thing; he carried no dramatic weight. But after Ilana’s scene with Ben, the way her death was handled was beneath team Darlton. In my opinion, anyway.

      • Cuttler

I’m sorry Jack but I have to disagree with you. After Arzst death, which was a way to show how unstable the old dynamite was, I watched scene after scene of the characters handling that sweating dynamite and kept thinking that it was unrealistic that the same accident hadn’t happened again to someone else. After all they DID handle those sticks constantly. When Ilana did blow up I though to my self “’bout time it happened again”.

      • Dave

Cuttler, the reason why Jack is right about Ilana’s death is because Ilana should have been smart enough to know that she shouldn’t be swinging around a bag of unstable dynamite and then basically dropping it to the floor. That’s why it was completely unrealistic. Ilana was made to seem like a smart, tough woman. But that scene where she died made her look like an idiot. Jack is completely right.

      • Sharon Mia Opinionstein

If we’ve learned anything, it’s that the ones who live have a purpose to fill, the ones who die have exhausted their usefulness. I dont think Ilana’s death was nonsensical at all.

      • yemi

I think that’s what bothers me so much about Eko’s death. There was still a lot of story left in the character but the writers had to kill him because the actor wouldn’t stay. For everyone else who died, the writers wanted to kill them off.

      • teresa

There’s a reason she was so careless. She wasn’t needed by the island (Jacob?) anymore. It’s a game Jacob and Man in Black are playing. Use ya then lose ya.

      • The Fist Pump Dance

LMAO at Wile E. Coyote. They should have had Ilana hold up a “Yikes!” sign right before the dynamite blew up.

      • Moonwvr

I have to agree with Jack. Ilana was supposed to be a protector of the 6 candidates on a special mission for Jacob. She barely had anytime to help them before she just blew up. That was a stupid way for her to die. If she was smart and/or skillful enough for Jacob to trust her to be a protector for the candidates, shouldn’t she have been smart enough to be able to handle dynamite?

      • Darwin

Who cares about Ilana? the last thing we needed was a Ilana backstory.

    • Jennie

      We NEED Mr. Eko!

    • LOL

Never cared much about Eko. He’s not missed.

      • Katja

        Blasphemy! :)

      • EC

        very much agreed

      • Janet

        Loved Mr. Eko!!

      • the vicster

you’re an idiot…Eko was one of the best written/acted characters of the show…his death was as upsetting as Charlie’s

      • Smokey

I seem to recall that he asked to be written off the show because he was not enjoying himself, and I remember hearing that he was a handful to work with… Although I enjoyed his character on the show, he doesn’t deserve to come back if he felt that way… (if those rumors were true) I’d rather see some closure for Ana Lucia

      • Rich

Love the actor. Loved him more as Adebisi on OZ.

      • Baco Noir

I stopped watching for 7 episodes after they killed him off. It was idiotic, I thought, because it made no sense to the story. It wasn’t until much later where I read Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje asked to be written out of the show due to the recent death of both his parents that I was able to come back. However, his death, and therefore his character, was pointless (esp. since he seemed to have a purpose on the show). Would have loved to see Mr. Eco back for one more moment, but oh well.

      • @Smokey

Smokey sez: seem to recall that he asked to be written off the show because he was not enjoying himself, and I remember hearing that he was a handful to work with… Although I enjoyed his character on the show, he doesn’t deserve to come back if he felt that way… (if those rumors were true) I’d rather see some closure for Ana Lucia”

I disagree – the whole story about the actor being difficult sounds fishy AND typical producer spin. The reality is probably closer to: he let us sign him into slavery to be on a hit show so we punished him. People seem to believe Cuse and Lindelof are these wonderful amazing people–that may be, but they are still power players…and typical ones at that.
Bet they never read Watership Down either!

    • Billiam

      Worse than Bai Ling?

      • Andrea

        Couldn’t agree more, Billiam.

      • yemi

Bai Ling only ruined one episode

    • station5thepearl

mr. eko was killed off because the actor WANTED to leave. i read that he was a big douche during the set..

      and spoiler: walt comes back!!

      • Veronica

Haha….Walt must be like 30 by now. I do keep thinking back about how they made a huge deal about him being special and then he just kind of disappeared.

      • Dr Zechariah Zenith

        Yep. Agreed.

It will be pretty lame if they didn’t tell us why was Walt special?

        Perhaps Henry Gale = Walt

      • Mr. Cluck

        Spoiler, you’re a douchebag!

      • @Smokey

Yawn. More like, the actor wasn’t willing to sign a slave contract like the others (ever wonder why they don’t do other projects at this high point in their careers, young fella?) and so they blackballed him. Nasty.

    • Mark

Eko was a great character, but the worst thing was Libby being killed off. I think that did hurt the show a little.

      • Kevin

Who cared about Libby? She served no purpose.

      • Josel

The producers said that they killed Libby because killing only Ana Lucia wouldnt make that episode shocking. killing both Ana Lucia and libby made Michael’s comeback story more emotional and heavy

      • teresa

Libby, Ecko, Walt…who cares? It’s Sayid, Charlie, Shannon, Boone, Jin and Sun that I cared about. They made a huge impact on my heart. The others, not so much.

      • teresa

Forgot about Alex and Carl and Danielle. That was sad.

      • @teresa

then get off the thread asshat

    • Mrs. James Ford

Not worse than Charlie! That one kills me every time I watch it. It’s the saddest Lost loss EVER…so far…

      • Mark

I never liked the Charlie character much. But he had the best death scene of any of them. I even felt sorry for him.

      • Meso soup

        Agreed. Loved Charlie.

    • Snsetblaze

Charlie’s death was far worse. Jin and Sun’s death was far worse. Alex and Danielle’s death was far worse. Even Iliana’s, Ana Lucia and Michael’s deaths were far worse.

    • Holmes

He was my favorite character on OZ, playing Adebisi. I can still see him screaming, “Give me some teeeeeeeeets!”

  • ollie

that sucks. it would have been awesome if he came back and had a seen with hurley and mib.

    • Tom Strong

What a jerkhole! Asking for too much money.

      • @Smokey

Oh really? How many millions do you figure this franchise has made over its run? Whatever the actors have been paid – they deserve more!

    • BLT

or a scene w/ locke or charly & claire. i really wanted to see eko again this last season. instead, we get arzt? ugh.

and, i really don’t care to see sarah again…didn’t like her at all.

  • ollie

    scene not seen my bad

  • pop

weren’t there rumors of him having poor attitude on set? i wonder if thats really why they didn’t bring him back

    • texgeekboy

If the guy that played Michael came back for S6 after what he said in S4, I think anyone can come back.

      • pop

        what did he say?! WAAAAAALLLLLLTTTT?

      • the vicster

        HAHAHHAHA

      • Manda

pop, that made me snort my drink!!!!
        lol!!!

  • Joe

Aaaaahhh that really sucks. He was only on for a season but he was my favorite character, even ahead of Desmond and Locke. It sucks he’s not even coming back for a cameo, I’ve been holding out hope all season.

    • lostidol

He definitely had an impact on the series, especially on the formation of John Locke’s character. Probably the most impactful of the all the tailies.

      • texgeekboy

Agreed lostidol, the return of Eko could have been something.

  • Loola

Oh Man! I LOVED Mr. Eko big time; it would’ve been fun to see him again.

Having said that I am just not sure how they could possibly begin re-introducing more old characters with so many loose ends left to tie and such little time…

  • shoutycat

That’s too bad – he was one of my favourites!

  • Ann

I wish Mr. Eko had been able to fulfill a greater purpose. He was a highly interesting character.

  • Bren

Julie Bowen said on Jimmy Kimmel last night that she wasn’t coming back during the final season….but, maybe she lied. It’s Lost. Who knows?

    • Craig

That’s too bad. I would have liked her to come back also. Didn’t the producers mention that Sarah was the mother of Jack’s son in the sideways? I guess they could reveal that without having a seen with her such as Jack talking to her on the phone and calling her Sarah.

      • Andrea

No, we don’t know who David’s mother is yet.

      • graeme

Obviously, Jack is going to be married/have a kid with Juliet. That’s why we haven’t seen her yet.

      • dogfoot

Guess what, Graeme? These days you don’t have to be married to have a kid!

    • Dicazi

She said she wasn’t going back to film, but since filming on Lost was already done when she said that, technically she wouldn’t have been lying.

  • timothy

not much of a character…or an actor. They said no because he asked for way too much money. No real loss. Shannon, Boone, Ana Lucia, and Juliet will all be back this month…maybe another sighting of Charlie and Penelope too. This actor was fool…and we will never hear from him again.

    • dank

I have to assume you mean that we will never hear from him again as Mr. Eko. He was a fairly accomplished supporting actor before he ever appeared on Lost, including roles in The Mummy Returns and the Bourne Identity. And he has 3 movies coming out in the next 2 years. I don’t think re-appearing in the Lost finale was going to make or break his career.

  • Craig

Off subject, but has any one heard if Lance Reddick is coming back…he played “the driver” Matthew Abaddon as is currently on Fringe? I thought he would have been great as Desmond’s driver in the Sideways World.

    • Billiam

      He will not be back.

      • Craig

Thanks for info. Too bad though I think he could have had a really cool cameo and already working another JJ Abrams show. I really could do without Ana Lucia.

  • OahuQueen

It’s my daily accuracy check. LOST is filmed on the island of OAHU, not the Big Island of HAWAII. So Julie Bowen would have flown from Maui to Oahu if she indeed DID appear in LOST this season. Get your facts right! WE expect and deserve higher standards of journalists, even for fluff stories like this.

    • lostidol

Wow, is your behind tight enough? Is the entire series filmed in Oahu, or only jungle/beach scenes? It could be that the sideways stories are filmed in Hawaii. Whether it is or not, just chillax, you smelly old troll. The story wouldn’t have changed a bit.

      • IreneD

        LOL.. well said lostidol

      • Jack

It’s all shot on Oahu, except for some random scenes in LA over the years.

  • jay

A lot of people say,if the kill a character on their favorite show they’ll stop watching, when they killed Mr. Eko I said I’ll never watch lost again,to this day I have not;and now I know I never will.

    • Rams

      Your loss, man!

    • Rut

Boohooo! And yet you still read the boards?? Whatever dude.

I would definitely agree though, that at this point it would be quite silly of you to start watching Lost again.

      • jay

Rut,you can save your Boohooo!all to yourself, and you’re telling me that you think that the only way I could come across the bit of news is because I read the boards?.are you serious?.

    • Mark

I think if they kill off the character because the actor wants to leave the show, then you are released from your blood oath of never watching again.

    • Pete

jay, only an idiot would stop watching Lost for that reason since death is a major part of the story.

      • jay

Well Pete, you have to be real ignorant to imply that because death is a major part of the story, one has to be an idiot if they stop watching the show because their favorite character, and the only reason why the watch the show dies.but I have to say this tho,I’ll rather be an idiot over ignorant full any day.

    • teresa

jay, you’ve missed so much! I feel bad for you. Yes, they are still killing people off but it’s supposed to get to you. It shows you still have a heart!

      • teresa

And that actor wanted off the show so be mad at him! He was supposed to be a major part of the series but he asked to be let go. When that happens, what do you expect the producers to do? He went out with a bang from Smokey!

  • Craig

That’s too bad you have missed out on some great story lines and amazing television. As a serious recommendation if you liked Lost don’t let Mr Eko’s unfortunate death prevent you from watching a fantastic series. Did you watch and enjoy before he was on the show?

    • jay

Graig thanks for your recommendation, you see I don’t do much T.V.,at that time a friend recommended to show to me,while I did not think the show was bad,I felt it was not good enough to make a long commitment, this was around the time Mr.Eko was introduce to the show, and I felt that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje performance was worth the price of admition.

  • Denise Osborne

Mr. Eko was one of my favorites. I was so bummed they killed him off.
