Wanda Sykes not expected to return to Saturdays on Fox

wanda-sykes-showImage Credit: Carin Baer/FoxDisappointing news for fans of Wanda Sykes: It’s looking highly unlikely that Fox will gamble on another season of her struggling late night talk show. The hour-long program — which featured guests like Erykah Badu, Chris Rock, Ray Romano, and Lisa Kudrow — struggled to find an audience against NBC mainstay Saturday Night Live before wrapping on April 24. Sykes was averaging roughly 2.1 million viewers and a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49, well below SNL’s 2.9 rating and down from what Fox’s Mad TV was averaging in the time period last year (a 1.1). Her show had performed admirably in the young demographics, however, especially teens.

News of the cancellation was first reported here. Fox will reveal its prime time lineup for fall on Monday in New York.

Sykes was the only late-night star to boast a prime-time profile on a competing network (though ironically, the Emmy-winning comedy in which she co-stars, The New Adventures of Old Christine, has yet learn whether it will receive a fall 2010 pickup from CBS). And given how Fox lost its bid for Conan O’Brien, Sykes represented the network’s sole late night presence, even if she just appeared on Saturdays.

Unlike prime-time series, late-night talk shows are usually given time to build an audience. It took CBS’ Craig Ferguson, for instance, three years before he started beating the competition (which was O’Brien, before he transitioned to The Tonight Show). Sykes tried to offer something the other late-night hosts don’t: lively panel discussions and adult beverages.

Good Riddance. She is not funny AT ALL!

    • Josh

your mom was funny last night *ss*o*le

  • hatersbehatin

She’ll bounce back with something bigger and better anyway. She’s one of the best.

I didn’t watch it regularly, but everytime I saw it; the show was flat out funny. That’s the problem with network TV these days, nothing sticks around long enough to actually build an audience. I mean in this day and age of television ‘Cheers’ and ‘Seinfeld’–two shows that are considered icons of TV– would have never made it to a second season, because both did horribly in ratings during their first few seasons.

    • Kara

I agree, it was a good show and she got a lot of big names.

    • Sally in Chicago

I totally agree. I watched it on hulu and loved the Wanda Bar concept.

Her last HBO special was hilarious but her show just wasn’t very good. I think it could have been better if she got some new people to help her out.

    • Yes

I agree with that. She’s funny, but the format did not suit her well. The roundtables with the drinks were good though.

  • pickles

    she is racist

    • Huh

She’s racist? With a white wife? Gosh I never thought about that. SHE MUST BE RACIST! Her show was funny, but I don’t think she got a fair chance, but it was a great start to getting the LGBT community positive media ball rolling

  • js

I thought it was good. I loved the panel chats.

They should put the shows on a DVD set for those who missed it. I thought Wanda Sykes was good, but some shows she was a little weak. I think that Fox shouldn’t have gotten into the late night Saturday wars right after the long 14 year run of MADtv. They should have run some old movies instead at 11 pm.

    • Sally in Chicago

Watch it on Hulu. She’s a good comedian.

  • j c

    Thank God!

Perhaps this will help stop perpetuating the stereotype that Wanda Sykes is funny.

    • m

Wow. Do you even know what stereotype means?

  • Philip

I’m bummed about this. The show was pretty good, though I knew it wouldn’t do as well as SNL. But guys, remember Spike Feresten got three seasons to make it work and before Wanda they were grooming him to take over MADTV’s slot. They needed some time to get Wanda’s show off the ground

  • mlimberg

Maybe someone will notice that Joy Behar is an uneducated idoit and needs to be removed for making fun of serious matters? This lady is a joke alright.

  • bobbie

GOOD BYE and GOOD RIDDANCE. Just about every actor, entertainer, comedian in Hollywood is so out of touch with reality. They have no morals or ethics. Wanda Sykes and the rest of Hollywood are the perfect examples of how our country is heading in the wrong direction.

    • Rattus

It certainly is headed in the wrong direction. It is allowing the idiot Christian right to dictate what it perceives to be the correct moral standards, thereby driving the U.S. into a religion-based third world status.

    • erin

what is your damage, bobbie? No, seriously, do you have severe head trauma or something?

  • angeljake

    Good…shes not funny.

  • john t.

soo…can they bring back MadTV now?

  • Henry

She’s funny. The show was a disaster.
