'Gossip Girl' exclusive: The scoop behind tonight's shocking season finale!

gossip-girl-finaleImage Credit: Giovanni Rufino/The CWSPOILER ALERT: If you have yet to watch tonight’s Gossip Girl finale, stop reading now. I repeat, if you have yet to watch tonight’s Gossip Girl finale, stop reading now. For the last time, if you have yet to watch tonight’s Gossip Girl finale, stop reading now. Everyone else, onward and downward…

Another season finale. Another blind item mystery solved. I can now confirm that Georgina’s top-secret baby bump — revealed in the closing minutes of tonight’s Gossip Girl‘s finale — was the out-of-the-blue pregnancy shocker at the center of my March 22 brain teaser. But the news that Dan’s going to be a papa was just one of several OMG! moments in the season-ender (Chuck shot! Dan still loves Serena! Jenny banished to suburbia!). Luckily, exec producer Stephanie Savage agreed to a little post-climax Q&A to help make sense of what went down and preview what’s to come.

My first question: Were those Taylor Momsen’s real tears?
STEPHANIE SAVAGE:
Yes. I wasn’t there on the day they shot that, but that’s what it really looks like if a girl with raccoon eyes cries that much. There was nothing we could do.

How long will Jenny be gone for?
SAVAGE:
I’d rather not say.

Will she be a changed person when she returns?
SAVAGE:
Yes. What happens in the finale has a real impact on Jenny.

Safe to say Blair/Chuck are far from over?
SAVAGE:
That is correct.

But how does she forgive him for sleeping with Jenny?
SAVAGE:
[Chuck getting shot] is significant enough that it creates some space for them to, if not exactly rekindle their romance right away, at least find a humanity in each other. She doesn’t forgive him immediately. But it’s a significant enough event to recalculate things.

So the Jenny thing is not irreparable?
SAVAGE:
It’s Chuck and Blair. It’s always going to be a wild ride. And that’s the thing. I believe personally that their love for each other is really strong. They are going to encounter incredible obstacles over the course of their time together and the question is whether or not they’re strong enough to make it through.

It’s been announced that Ed Westwick will be traveling to Paris with Blake Lively and Leighton Meester to shoot scenes for the season premiere. Does that mean Chuck was wearing a bullet-proof vest or something?
SAVAGE:
Ed will definitely be filming in Paris with us this summer. That’s all I can confirm. Don’t rule out flashbacks. And we’ve been visited by ghosts before.

Let’s talk about the baby bombshell. Was it always your plan for Georgina to come back pregnant?
SAVAGE:
Yes. We did the math on her leaving town. We sent her away and we were like, “Hmm… that could work out well.” The last gesture I made to [Michelle] when she went away was I mimed a belly bump so she had something to look forward to when she came back.

Does Mercy‘s cancellation mean we’ll get more Georgina next season?
SAVAGE:
It certainly opens the door to expanding her role. We just got the news a few days ago so we’re still in process of figuring out how it affects our plans. We love Michelle and Georgie and would welcome both of them spending much more time with us.

Dan was planning to follow Serena to Paris when he was interrupted by Georgina. Safe to say the Dan/Serena love story is…
SAVAGE:
… reactivated. Sorting through that is going to become a larger story.

OMG!!!!!! wait?? i dont watch this show?? oh off to a chuck forum!!!!

    • Rashad

That season finale was EPIC!!! I also must admit that it PISSED ME OFF…Jenny ruined EVERYTHING!!! I’m SUPER EXCITED about season 4!!

      • Airhead

ugh, i hope jenny goes back to like she used to be before she became an uber bitch

      • brandy

        best gg episode ever!!!

      • seattleellen

I admit I became so burnt out on indeed the uber bitch jenny that I couldn’t watch the finale & I’ve watched the show since the very 1st episode. If they do bring her back, please unskank & unbitch her as otherwise I won’t miss her or Vanessa.

  • A

You have ruined Chuck and Blair, watching him take his almost rape victims virginity was DISGUSTING!!!!!! and then kissing Blair with Jenny stink all over him, come on what were you guys thinking. FU and your stupid OMG way of writing, yall are too stupid to write an actual storyline so yall do OMG moment after OMG moment, forget about CB, the main issue is the storyline was gross to do after he just pimped Blair out for a hotel. You can save your stupid damage control interviews, we only needed one to see that you are scared out of your ass that you just alienated a huge part of your audience. Whatev, i wont be watching thats for sure.

    • Jason

Little chick A, you take your fictional TV characters waaaayyyyyy to seriously. Would I be out of line, ‘shippers, if I told this “A” chick to…ahem, get a life?

      • A

Actually my issue is less to do with the couple and more to do with the fact that no teenage girl would ever willing give her virginity to her almost rapist, it doesnt happen and the fact that they built an OMG moment around it is gross. We all know they will put Chuck and Blair back together with some WTF storyline, who cares about that? It was a disgusting storyline to do, and I dont know what they were thinking.

      • avery

people. that was totally true to life and thats the best part about gossip girl. girls make stupid decisions like that all the time.

      • julie

um no, avery. girls do not make decisions to sleep with the men who almost raped them.

      • KCatty

Sadly, Julie, they do. Far more than you’d expect.

I have to say, as much as I find Taylor Momsen to be an annoying twit, I was really pleased with her portrayal as Jenny absorbed the fallout of all of her actions, but sleeping with Chuck in particular. I thought there was a realistic vulnerability there that has been lacking in her character as of late. Hopefully she can keep that going when she eventually returns.

      • julie

if you’ve ever met or known a victim of rape or attempted rape maybe you would be better informed. it’s just not realistic.

      • onlymystory

Actually Julie, it is fairly common for a rape or assault victim to go back to the rapist particularly when it was someone they knew. There are different reasons behind that choice but often it stems from the belief that as a victim no one else will want to be with you. It’s twisted and messed up but its true. If I was taking a guess, I would say that you (Julie) have either been or know someone who was a victim. Hence the anger. I just want to say that as a victim myself, we all react in different ways. I would never react in Jenny’s way but my situation wasn’t with someone I knew. I have a friend who was raped by a friend and she did go back to him several times. Something like that screws a person up. And not all of our follow up choices make sense. The fact that Gossip Girl chose to follow that storyline is very realistic. What will be interesting to see is if they examine that plot further or hide it away.

      • Johnification

You’re right, Julie. That’s why there is no such thing as a persistent abusive relationship.

      • Amanda

Julie, are you yourself a victim of rape? Do you know someone who was? I seriously doubt it. It does happen. Just because you lack the ability to do research to actually know such things occur does not mean it’s a fathom of someone’s imagination.

      • kingbee

@ everyone talking about the rape issue, i think it’s kind of like stockholm syndrome but not really the exact same thing. it cud happen and wud be more believeable if raccoon eyes was a better actress. @A, fear not, I understand that they’re actually firing all the writers or something like that so the show should get better next year. espesh with G playing a ‘bigger’ role (pun intended). oh and can we say “not dan’s baby” obvi.

      • Jess

        Yes, this is awesome, bbwloversmatch

      • @kingbee

        Kingbee, are you from Maryland?

      • Monty

I read this article to see which blind item got checked off…and this is what i found. I’m really really glad I never saw an episode of this show, and don’t associate with people who do. This makes me happy :)

      • Realist

It’s okay, guys. Julie is obviously twelve with no experience regarding the mess that is the actual world. Carry on.

      • julie

@amanda don’t make assumptions about people. yes i know someone who was a victim and whether i was myself is none of your business so shut the h e l l up before making stupid remarks like that.

    • Nicole

Actually… I agree with Avery…. Two of my best friends have given their virginity up willingly to their almost rapists… and gone back for more afterwards…

It does happen… and when you’re as desperate as Jenny was for a sign that maybe someone cares just a little (even if it’s just to get in your pants) about you, you’ll do anything. Including sleeping with them… the fact that he was her almost rapist (when did this happen? I honestly can’t remember…) probably wasn’t even crossing her mind at that point…

      • Anonymous

        the pilot episode

    • Jacob

      Please kill yourself.

      • italian

so le me gets this straight chuck doesn’t die

    • Mallory

Ughh too many people commenting on here do not know what it’s like being a teenage girl, what happened with Chuck and Jenny is a lot more realistic than you think. And I would really not call Jenny and “almost rape victim” and I’m pissed at the people who even dropped the “almost” and call her a flat out rape victim and Chuck a rapist. That’s insulting to people who have actually been raped. And the original commenter says Stephanie Savage alienated a huge part of her audience with all these “OMG moments” – that is exactly what Gossip Girl is all about and I have no idea why you were watching it in the first place if you wanted to watch something boring and lame. Avery put it well – girls make stupid decisions all the time. I shouldn’t say just girls, boys too. Either way we aren’t perfect and these things happen and it’s nice to see the show acknowledging that these kind of messed up things happen to normal people in the process of growing up.

      • Misty

Mallory: Think back to the first episodes of the first season. That’s when Serena and Dan went up to the rooftop and rescued Jenny from Chuck, who was about to rape her. In last night’s episode, it was more statutory rape, depending on the laws in NY for age of consent.

      • onlymystory

I gotta agree with Mallory. It more than pisses me off to see everyone calling Chuck a rapist/almost rapist. Chuck is a jerk, a cad, many things but as far as we know, he is not a rapist. Even Blair wouldn’t put up with that.
That scene in season 1, there are a few things I think people should remember about it. 1) Chuck was kissing & groping Jenny. That is definitely assault and obviously bad but there’s a big difference between that and rape. It’s demeaning to those of us who have suffered through rape to equate Chuck’s actions with those of a rapist. 2) Jenny knew Chuck’s reputation even then. She was 14 and more innocent and again, clearly being taken advantage of. But we learn pretty quick that Jenny has been watching Blair, Nate, Serena, & Chuck for some time and knows a lot about them. The show has pretty well established too that everyone knows Chuck Bass has a reputation. Jenny made a choice to go on that rooftop with him that night. In this case, I don’t think that should be discounted.
This recent development though does bug me either way. Just because if we wanted to see that Chuck hasn’t totally changed, lets see him do something awful to a friend, not hurt Blair again. He could have at least learned that much. If Blair goes back to Chuck now, she’s not the strong girl many of us love. She’s just a doormat. Plus I’d like to see a storyline that would show the effects of the finale on Jenny but I don’t think Gossip Girl will give us that.

      • Jess

Not statutory guys…Chuck is, in the show 19…Jenny is 17…that would make it legal in all 50 states. Most states its 3 to 4 years…and in many some states 17 is even the age of consent.

      • Tanya

Onlymystory, sorry to disagree, but as much as I love Chuck, he kept forcing himself on Jenny on that rooftop, although Jenny kept protesting and telling him to stop. It doesn’t matter what she knew, or that she went up with him up to that roof, the moment she said “No” and he didn’t stup gropping her, that’s pushed the boundery. And who knows what would have happened if Dan didn’t show up in time…

    • shut up A

uh A you sound really dumb, ITS A FICTIONAL STORY! get over it don’t you ever read. its make believe, not real. no one cares if you won’t watch, we still will be. is this like the story of your life so now that you see it on tv your disgusted by yourself? no? so shut up.

      • Jen

I agree with you “shut up A” it is a TV show – just watch and enjoy!!

      • L

FINALLY. A person who has realised THIS IS A FICTIONAL TV SHOW; ‘shut up A’. You’ve all been arguing rape victims etc. in a GOSSIP GIRL thread. Go find another forum to debate that out in.
And people need to understand the world and it’s people work in funny and often stupid ways so you never rule out a victim going back to their perpetrator. Crazier things happen.

    • mee

DONT WATCH who needs u !!!!!

    • Lili

I really don’t think, her character was thinking, “oh, this is the guy who tried raping me 4 years ago,”. I think it was more about having someone, anyone, there at that moment when it seemed everone else had turned her back on her…

    • Cri

Oh wowwww, A, really?? I would have to agree with the ppl saying that this can happen. Yes being realistic, when thinking of rape, you think of a random person on the street brutally raping you and of course, you are then scarred for the rest of your life, unfortunately.

There are cases of rape where perhaps it’s a boyfriend or close friend that rapes you, or tries to rape you…and it may not even be that serious, sexual assault, touching…i am NOT saying it is in any way acceptable, don’t get me wrong…I am just trying to say that there are cases where the girl either forgives the person and learns to have them in their lives again, as Jenny did…or as someone else mentioned, they are messed up in the head and feel the need they have to sleep with that person again.

So my point is, don’t blame Gossip Girl writers for the story line…obviously it kept a lot of ppl on edge and interested…

And no offense to those who have unfortunately experienced rape or anything along those lines before but i honestly think that back in Season 1 the whole Chuck groping Jenny isn’t really considered attempted rape…i think it’s a little exagerrated…i honestly almost forgot about it if i didn’t read the posts.

      • Tanya

Just to clarify: the reason people are calling it attempted rape is because through all of Chuck’s gropings Jenny kept saying “NO” and Chuck would not stop. The only thing that stopped Chuck was Dan.

      • Jenna

If Dan hadn’t arrived and punched Chuck out, Chuck would have had sex with Jenny. He touched her against her will and attempted to have sex with her, when she said NO.

I love Chuck as much as the next Chair fan but downplaying what happened is insulting and stupid. Even the writers acknowledge it was an attempted rape.

    • Kiara

ok im not sure if any1 was acualy paying any attention during that part but the only reason why jenny slept with chuck is because she wanted love remember she thought every1 hated her! and all she wanted was love!

  • sam

what about nate and serena..omfg u guys hate them dont u

    • Yve

I love SERENATE… why bring back stupid dan humphrey??? he was so in love with vanessa… and now serena? give him a new girl!!! This show needs more characters or just needs to do a big gang bang with all 6 of them! ;)

      • E

this i actually agree with xD

      • Rayn4u

I think I have to agree with Chuck’s comment on their relationship: their biggest worry so far is “who’s hair is shinier”. They’re flat and monotone characters. Well, in comparison to Chuck and Blair anyway =)

  • Michael

That UK promo that leaked onto YouTube really ruined the finally for me.

  • Someone

Please just let Chuck and Blair stay dead. There’s no coming back from the things they’ve done. Not all of us love them, not all of us want them to rekindle the emotional abusive bull they call a relationship.

    • Tay

i understand you have your own opinion and thats fine but i just want to say i LOVE the chuck and blair storyline i think without this show would lose alot of its appeal and i think that even though they have this “emotional abusive bull” they love each other even if they are fictional and alot of people enjoy that. sorry for the rant .. just wanted to share my opinion :)

    • Gabby

Totally agree. They should just break Chuck & Blair up for good. I used to be a fan of theirs and ignore things but now I can’t. Their relationship is ridiculous.

    • Mallory

They’re still the best and most intriguing relationship on the show. They’re the two best characters and have gone through a lot of character development which is more than you can say about most of the other characters, i.e. Serena. FAR fewer people are as attached to Serena/Anyone, Dan/Anyone, etc.

      • agreed

i think that says everything about all the relationships on the show. NOONE on this show is likable. there are no couples to “root for”. GG has always been much more into being shocking than into making likable characters. Honestly, the people that reeeeally like this show are probably just as juvenile, vile, and mean spirited as the characters they love. That’s the only way I could see rooting for any of these people.

      • whale sweater

well i am none of those things but i enjoy this show for what it is: the scandalous lives of manhatten’s elite. i like different shows for different reasons, from parks and rec to lost to glee to bones. this show is a hyper reality and a melodrama. the more of that the better.

    • Yve

I double that. When chuck said “today I did the most romantic thing….” I was like… what? going on top of the empire state building is the most romantic thing? I can think of other things 10 times more romantic!

I can’t see the sparkle between them they had in season 1 or 2… it’s over!

      • Stella

I think he meant the proposing, not the mere going on top of the empire state building. ;) i can’t wait to see them together again. and i so love derena!

    • Rina

Chuck and Blair are the heart, fuel and blood of this show. Their dynamic drives a lot of the storylines and honestly I would be bored to tears without them. They are fantastic together and I honestly feel sad for the very few people who dont see it and dont enjoy it

  • Someone

I hated literally every single thing about this episode. Not one single character did a redeemable thing. It’s frustrated and one-note characterization at its worst. Ugh.

    • Luxe

      Wait, did Chuck die?

      • Yve

no… he just got shot… but he is a main character and main characters won’t die unless they want out of their contract!!

I refuse to believe that baby is Dan’s. It has to be another one of Georgina’s schemes. I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT!!!

    • Nicole

Yup… I would definitely do everything in my power to get an Un-tampered with (by Georgina) paternity test (they do those in the womb too right? May not be as accurate, but…) if she showed up pregnant with “my baby”. And of course, knowing Dan, he’ll probably want to help with it… no matter what she’s done in the past…

-sigh- if only someone had listened to her before… wonder how that story line woulda played out…

    • Randi

Yeah I hope it is someone else’s baby, but they can have Georgina playing with Dan’s mind for a little, that would be fine. As long as it’s not ultimately his baby.

    • Felicia

OMG, now that I think about it,
I completely agree with you. I’m so sure it’s most likely NOT Dan’s baby, because we all know about Georgina and her mischievous, lying ways, so of course she probably ‘claimed’ it to be Dan’s just to stir things up and use him.

      • suesue

G is not pregers she went up to everyone and they would not help her with her Russian problem therefore she knows that she can play on Dans feelings for help and thats what she is going, scheming. Bet me she is not pregnant.

    • Airhead

i hope its not his baby. it better not be coz if it is it will just RUIN gossip girl. and if it was his then why would she go to all those other people first?

      • Es

Maybe because she wanted to find a way to make it go away (I must have missed the episode where they sent her to “siberia”) But it is totally Dan’s baby. Remember they slept together when the university semester first started, more than once. She visited his half brother, but don’t think she did anything with him…

      • BL

Did you notice how the thing G did before going to talk to Dan was follow Blair to the hospital? She got the idea because she was standing in front of the room full of babies.

    • Jess

Obviously not Dan’s. Why would she go to Chuck and Blair first if the baby was Dan’s? She only went to him after he started spouting off about how cute babies were and how much he liked them. She’s just using Dan to help her hide from the Russians, or whatever it is she’s hiding/running from.

    • Shannon

I thought Dan never had sex with Georgina…?

I am thoroughly disgusted by the fact that Jenny and Chuck slept together. I was the biggest fan of this show, but that was honestly just a deal breaker for me. Maybe once September comes, I’ll have had time to process and I’ll watch again. But as of now, Stephanie, you killed Gossip Girl.

    • Jason

(smacks head!) Oh, that’s RIGHT, Jenn, the producers completely forgot to run the script ideas by you before they taped the scenes! HOW did that happen? ‘Cause, you know, the VIEWERS are in control of the actual storylines on TV shows, right? And you ALLLLL agree on every point, so there’s no other possible way for a story to be told. Right?

      • liza

Hey, Jason, piss off. People are just stating their opinions. Go be self-righteous elsewhere.

      • Tay

kudos to you jason i know that we gossip girl fans all have our own opinions but seriously i dont think stephanie really cares if one person quits watching .. i know i will still watch even if i dont think its right what chuck and jenny did .. tv shows and dramas are made to be dramatic, shocking, and usually in the end teach you a life lesson and as said in the q&a jenny is changed by what happened .. she learned her lesson. so again kudos jason :)

      • KCatty

Thanks to Jason for saying what so many of us are thinking. If I had a dollar for every post on EW where someone just SWORE they were going to breakup with a show because they didn’t like something a writer did….

So Tay I guess the lesson learned to night that if your almost rapist tells you hes sorry you will be healed enough to give him your virginity. Wow thats a good one…..drama and obstacles do not have to be gross and disgusting, they could have done it another way. They obviously know that now, given that this is about the fifth damage control interview they have given since this spoiler of a CJ hookup came out.

    • Rina

I completely agree, I’m turned off with the Chuck/Jenny storyline. I’m not going to stop watching but I’m just not that into this show anymore, it felt like a desperate act for ratings and a cheap one at that
