'House' exclusive: Olivia Wilde taking leave of absence

Filed under: Scoop and tagged: ,

olivia-wilde-beautifulImage Credit: Joseph Viles/FoxHouse will be minus Thirteen when it returns next season.

Olivia Wilde is taking time off from the Fox hit to shoot a starring role in the big-budget sci-fi Western Cowboys & Aliens.

“Olivia will be there at the very beginning of the season, and then she will not be there for a period of time,” explains executive producer Katie Jacobs.

Production on the Jon Favreau-helmed Cowboys — which is set to get under way next month and continue through the summer — is expected to overlap with season 7 of House by at least two months. The film also stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Sam Rockwell. (Fun fact: Lost boy Damon Lindelof co-wrote the script with Fringe exec producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.)

“She had this opportunity and she was really excited about it,” says Jacobs. “We’re very proud of her and very happy for her.”

The seeds of Thirteen’s departure were planted in last night’s season finale when, in the final moments of the episode, the Huntington’s-afflicted doc announced that she was taking a leave of absence from Princeton Plainsboro.

“The two things — the dates that she was going to be away and the story line [we wanted to tell] — worked out,” says Jacobs. “When the story unfolds, it will [all make] sense.”

Damn, I was hoping she’d leave for good

    • bry

what!? aside from house she’s my favorite character! if only those two could’ve hooked up.

      • wasabi

nices, maybe you should just get a dog. and stop spamming.

      • sadini

Mine too. Well, aside from House and Wilson. I just don’t get it why everyone hates her so much

      • chris

we hate her cuz she cant act. is is on the show soley cuz she has a wicked hot body. That’s it. She has no acting ability and needs to be permanently taken off, i.e. killed off. And kal penn was a good addition to the show. Rightup till he got his black pride upped a notch and decided to join obama. I’ll never get why black ppl like obama so much.

    • Sammie

Me too! I can’t stand her.

      • calvin

come on now. what’s wrong with her. She’s a doc, gorgeous, has a multi-racial, bi-gender love itch going on. she’s perfect. The eyes are what get me though

      • Roy

What is it with people disliking 13? She’s not that bad!

      • Mark

Are all of you crazy. Did anyone not watch the first 3 seasons and see how bad Camerons acting got and how annoying the House triangle was. 13 taking over for Cameron was the best thing for the show. As well as Kal Penn coming in but unfortunately we lost him too.

      • Evelyn

That, I really don’t understand. Calvin’s answer was 100% correct! Cameron was the boring character, not Thirteen. At least 13 does what she thinks is the best, and as house said in episode 3 of the 7th season; “Thirteen was the only man in here.” She has some guts, and I like that about her.

      • Obama Rules

        @Chris
Obama is loved by more than just blacks for one. Two, he has to clean up what has taken the last four presidents to mess up. Can you fix 12 years of problems in four, i dont think so. He is doing a lot better than our last presidents. Why should he be blamed for things he did not do. Put the blame where it is suppose to go. And for the record you idiot, he is the first black president, of course we are going to support him. But remember, Blacks only make up less than 20% of the population so we did not put him office by our selves.

    • Britt

heh, that would be good, especially if Forman went with her

    • Kathy B.

      Ditto. Can’t stand the character.

    • The green eyed monster

All women do not like her. I wonder why?

      • julia

i have no problem with 13 i actually like her character

      • MDEP

Don’t say “all women” I like her and her character.

      • 13+me=awesome

Not all women…I love her. The best thing about her is that you don’t even have to have the sound up on the TV to appreciate her. Just kidding, I really do like the character. It’s just an added bonus that she’s unbelievably hot.

      • 13+me=awesome

But I do agree that a lot of women don’t like her. And, yes, it probably has a lot to do with that green-eyed monster!

      • LG

I like her more then I liked Cameron

      • Zaphod

13+me=awesome, high five! My thoughts exactly!!

      • lala

thirteen is awesome! I wish taub and foreman left, they suck!

      • Oslofish

All women do not like her, eh..? Check out who’s #1 on After Ellen’s Hot 100 list this year…

      • Ashley

This is @Nadia, because I don’t think she is watching the same show the rest of us are. Which doctors are lusting after her? Foreman and…? Sure, House makes comments, but she is hot and comments on every girls attractiveness. She has a terminal illness that doesn’t show signs all the time, so maybe you should look into her disease before making judgments for its portrayal. Weaknesses? She’s private to a fault, doesn’t let people help her, she certainly has faults. I wouldn’t mind if people hated her, if they had legitimate reasoning, but I haven’t heard any good arguments for people’s hate of her. It’s either jealousy or mad that Cameron is gone and Thirteen isn’t.

      • Kirsty

Sorry, but not all women. I do love her.. I think she’s awesome and I’m gutted she won’t be back for all of next Season. + @Nadia I don’t think her being a private person can count as a flaw, she clearly just does not want people to know all her business or them to pity her, which I can relate to and I find it very ignorant of you to comment on a disease you clearly know very little about. It’s a slow developing disease that does not always show symptoms and regardless of whether you can SEE her disease or not it’s a terminal illness. Good luck to Olivia and I hope to see her back on House in the future :-D

      • Mary

Because her storylines are insanely boring and take time away from more interesting characters? Not to mention the rather offensive implication that when 13 is having “self destructive” sex she goes with women but for a wholesome relationship goes with men?

This from a woman who likes Olivia Wilde well enough, but thinks the character of 13 sucks.

      • Kelley

I don’t dislike her, but I find her boring. I think the only House fellow I don’t find boring is Taub. I liked Kutner too and early Cam.

      • Jill

I don’t like Foreman either. Foreman and Thirteen are just bad imitations of House. The show already has a narcissistic smug ego-maniac who cares more about self then patients and he’s played by a much better actor, Hugh Laurie.

      • bklynny

Nadia, she’s not leaving for good.
        Get over it.

      • calvin

@ Nadia….are you ok? do you really think that 13′s acting is poor? I love the show, but really she’s not the weakest link. I hate to say it, but Foreman is the character that seems out of place….and its not because he’s black. one year he’s anal and the next year he’s arrogant, and I do remember a time when his self-loathing almost cost him his career…he still hasn’t decided if he is house-like or his own man. And how could he let 13 sleep anywhere else but his humble abode

      • xycl

I don’t hate her, I’m a girl, and I want to marry her, is that so much to ask?

      • LOVE13

I love 13, who wouldn’t? oh and I’m a chick, I want to do 13 and then marry her….I’m glad they’re bringing her back

      • Heather

I’m a woman, and I like her. I like her character, the intelligence and beauty combination is very complimentary to all women, no need to be green eyed there. :) Plus she has had many interesting storylines to the series. And even I will admit she is sexy!!! :)

      • Mia

        Another one here, and I can say that in name of the entire household here;
Me and my four sisters all LOVE thirteen. In the beginning we watched the show because we liked it, and when 13 came in, we started watching more and more just because of this great character in it!
I even went to see TRON legacy just because olivia wilde was in it.

    • Gabrielle

Me too! Olivia Wilde better pay her manager and PR agents big money, they’re really doing their jobs

    • krak

      just kill 13 already!!

    • Caroline

hahaha that’s what i was hoping for, too!!! too bad…

    • namedone

You’re joking, right? She was one of the best. I’d have hoped for Foreman to leave, but whatever.

      • xycl

I know right? Why do they keep Foreman, his character is basically a wannabee House-personality. There can only be one House, and that’s House. I don’t understand why people hate Olivia so much? Her character is the most interesting character on that show, Cameron’s character annoyed the crap outta me, nobody likes a goody-goody. Well, I don’t. I do want to see Olivia in Cowboys & Aliens though. :3

    • Yve

      i feel the same… she’s boring!

    • Sandra

Ditto, can’t stand her. The only thing worse on that show is Huddy.

    • bklynny

Its those tacky Cuddy and Cameron crazies that hate on her.
I think 13 is an awesome character. She’s fiesty and passionate and has chemistry with House and the team. She’s my favorite character right up there with House.

      I’m glad she leaves temporarily
      and returns later.

      • Claire

THANK YOU! Your comment is awesome :)
She’s such an obvious and perfect fit to the group. Plus, it needed someone with quite an interesting sexuality.

      • I LOVE OLIVIA WILDE

        Couldn’t agree more!

    • Kathty

13 is so HOT & interesting, the show needed someone like her & she plays the part so well. I like Cameron too, because I like the the diversity in their characters, it seems to work well. However, HUGE MISTAKE, when the writers put 13 with Foreman, I didn’t see any chemistry @ all & both seemed to argue far too much. Keep 13 with women!

      • xycl

        THIS IS THE CORRECT RESPONSE.

    • Shester

13 is a brilliant character, and I’ll miss her until she comes back.

    • charly

      go away!

    • Stephen

I don’t get it… Shes hands down my favorite character after house. I hope she gets back asap.

    • moviemaker35

That would be a very sad thing to [not] see…

I don’t think people realize how subtly potent Wilde’s character has been in buoying the vital intrigue and indeed, the running success of an unfolding series that is “House.” Thirteen is unlike anyone else we’ve seen and loved so far. In contrast to the other “beautiful, strong, smart” female roles that justly fulfill their purpose, Thirteen thrives because of the mystery she offers “House,” its audience, its writers, and its contingent success in opening new layers of the mind in which to explore.

They need to do more with this character. And I can’t wait to see what that is. What a gem!

  • Bethany

Oh boy! More screentime for the Huddy shmoop-fest! *barf*

    • Billy

      Well said :)

    • Liz

Yep, more screentime for Huddy, and I for one (like MANY others) can’t wait!! :)

      • melanie

        here, here, liz!

    • bondfool

Huddy, Foreteen, Chameron, this crap is the reason I don’t watch anymore.

      • jpmd

Too bad – you’re missing the most watched series, world wild ! I guess some people can’t handle exceptional,
        intelligent and critically acclaimed TV,
(but I guess there’s always Survivor).

      • Becca

jpmd, the fact that something is popular doesn’t make it good.

(there are plenty of intelligent, exceptional shows on television right now. House isn’t one of them.)

      • bklynny

Now House is critically acclaimed because Huddy kissed up each other and no Lucas in sight, when you were the ones bi**ching that House is crap. You Huddy crazies are phonies at best.

      • NB

Becca – PLEASE tell me what other TV shows you deem to be MORE intelligent and exceptional than House?? House is by far one of the only reasons to watch TV!

    • Lizzy

Yay, more for the brainless Huddy fangirls to enjoy, yuck.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOit better be just a leave of absence

    • moviemaker35

This character actually made me cry (I have no idea). There’s something so evasive and delightful about it. One of the more complex characters carrying the show- even while she’s gone. Knowing that Olivia Wilde will come back and turn the lights back on is worth waiting the next few episodes of this season to see. Period.=)

  • link

well who didn’t see that coming

  • link

well who didn’t see that coming

  • Jill

Why SHE gets to come back and JMO gets to leave for good? not fair at all!!

    • Britt

      totally!

    • Q

13 is just cameron-lite!! Bring back JMo, miss her! 1000 times more interesting.

      • Claire

Why would we have to choose? Better yet, they could both come back, and as a couple!

(Yeah, I am messing with you, though I kind of like that idea)

      • Desukar

The reason Thirteen and Cameron can’t both be on the show at the same time is because they basically fill the same role: the young, smart, beautiful, secretly troubled woman. And god forbid there be two of those on one show…. Though really, I don’t think they’d have much to say to each other. Since they were written to fit that same role, they have become similar characters.

Another reason: As soon as a show/book/movie/whatever starts to have more female characters than male characters, it becomes a “woman’s” show. But a show that has more male than female is A-okay for everyone. More interesting female characters = less average male viewers. And that would kill ratings.

      • JnicK

Ummmmmm, I can think of lots of things they could say to each other… or do to each other :D

    • Sandra

Because JMo is a pathetic actress and producers don´t care about her but obviously they want OW back. Good for her. I just want her back because I like the character.

      • Lizzy

JMo is so much better than OW. That’s a fact.

      • Sindy

        @ Lizzy
        Says who exactly? The Cam-fangirls?

      • bklynny

Word, Sandra. Olivia has range as an actress. Thirteen is my favorite female character. Well I will have House, Wilson, Chase, Foreman bromance scenes to make up for her temporary leave, until she returns later.

They need to pair Olivia and Mischa Barton up in something again. Their chemistry on The OC was weirdly fantastic.

    • Noelle

      Agreed. :)

    • isitin

I hope Sam is a girl, cause I can’t see any guy watching the OC. I heard Mischa Barton is a really big pot head & her acting career is over.

      • Cam

I hated her character on OC.
I was so glad she died.
Therefore season 4 was the best!! *lol*

    There goes the hotness factor.

      I know :(

  • HOUSE FAN

OMG. NO OLIVIA WILDE. WHAT WILL I DO? MY WHOLE LIFE REVOLVES AROUND HOUSE, SO KNOWING THAT ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE SHOW WILL NOT BE THERE (EVEN IF IT’S JUST SHORT TERM), MEANS I HAVE NOTHING TO LIVE FOR. WHEN THE SHOWING FINALLY GOES OFF THE AIR, I WILL CERTAINLY HAVE TO END MY LIFE.

    • Jake

Let me know if you need any help.

      That’s some subtle satire there.
