'Lost' series finale eligible for Emmy consideration

lostImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCThe Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Board of Governors on Wednesday made a rule exception that will have a direct impact on the May 23 finale of Lost. Past rules have indicated that extended length episodes can only run for two hours but Lost’s finale is scheduled for two and a half hours. The board will now grant eligibility to the drama’s series finale episode.

Similar exceptions have been made in the past for the series finales of The Wire and The Sopranos. “We have a soft spot in our hearts for the final episodes of long-running series,” says John Leverence, the TV Academy’s senior vice president of awards.

The Lost finale can be submitted for consideration under any number of scenarios. A Lost star may use it to compete in one of the acting categories, while ABC Studios may use it to go after the best drama prize.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lost gets a lot of Emmy love as a tribute to the series as a whole. Kind of like how Return of the King got so many Oscars partially because voters recognized the significance of the whole trilogy.

    • Ace

I really hope you are right Jennifer, but I had hoped the same for The Wire and Battlestar Galactica which were pretty much completely ignored during their runs.

      • Billiam

But Lost hasn’t been completely ignored. It won during its first season, and some of its actors have been nominated for Emmys (with O’Quinn and Emerson winning).

      • Greg

Plus, the last episode of Battlestar was HORRIBLE. Hopefully Lost can clear that low bar. The Wire, like I think Billiam was getting at, was never given any love. Battlestar ended so badly to me (after loving most of the show) that it made me think it never deserved any love.

    • Addison

Can we get EW to officially back Lost as this year’s best drama and best season or series’ finale?

      • timothy ward

I have been watching Lost from the very beginning. I think I have only missed 2 or 3 episodes. I am hoping for a wonderful series finale but it is still a little early to say you want Lost nominated for best series finale. I am assuming that like most of the rest of us you have not yet seen the finale so do not know yet if it will be any good or not. I have been terribly dissapointed in some of the series finales of my favorite shows and hope it doesn’t happen again with Lost. They have had all the time they could ever need or want to plan and write the amazing series finale we all want. I hope they do not blow it.

      • Caleb Jones

there should be, but there is no emmy award for best series’ finale

  • Silk Spectre

    They certainly deserve it.

  • Tim G. (@rural_juror)

It would be oddly fitting if it won Best Drama in both it’s first season and it’s last. Fingers crossed.

  • kay

    Nestor Carbonell FTW!

    • Daniel

I second that! Guy with the guylinered eyes that doesn’t use guyliner for the win!

      • Calla

Was he killed? I thought he couldn’t die, and if he could, why did Smokey wait so long? Why wasn’t Richard more afraid?

  • Jeremy

    I’m rooting for it!

  • shawshank

In my opinion, the two Lost actors most deserving of a nod were Yunjim Kim and Elizabeth Mitchell, but the former wasn’t given anything to work with and the latter is gone. It is a shame. Yes, Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn are amazing, but go back and watch D.O.C. It’s much harder to be quietly outstanding. Josh Holloway really deserved a nod for last year. Hopefully he’ll be recognized this time around.

    • Lemon

Oh, Elizabeth Mitchell and Josh Holloway were robbed of nominations. Definitely a shame.

    • Kyle

Totally agree. Especially regarding Elizabeth Michell who wasnt given much to do either after her first season. :(

      • Shane

If Elizabeth Mitchell won for her one-expression-I cannot-speak-over–a-whisper-please-interpret-my-quavering-lip performances, then they may as well give Emmys to just about anyone.
She has carried her attempts to act on V as well I am sorry to see.

    • PJ

You do realize that the Emmy nominations don’t come out until next month? There’s still hope for ya (but I doubt it).

    • Caleb Jones

matthew fox should win. his story going from flawed hero of science to a man of faith willing to let others be the leader to being jacobs chosen one has been very well acted and not what many expected. No one could say “we have to go back, kate” better than him!

      • Krys

        JEARS!!!!!!!

        I hate Jack.

      • laura g

Matthew Fox should get a nod. His scene on the sub before Sawyer pulled the wires was fantastic.

      • April C

        It’s spelled JEERS, dude.

      • Alex

“Jears” means “Jack’s tears,” thus the odd spelling.

  • cekma

I hope Terry O’Quinn does not take his name of the ballot this year. I would like to see him try for best actor, not supporting He was just as much a lead as the man in black as MAtthew Fox was.

    • lockeness

Bullseye. Playing Sideways Locke and Fake Locke, both at an extremely high level…no one is more deserving of the big prize.

      • Sara

Totally agree…the way he plays Flocke & Sideways Locke is amazing…even his facial expressions are different

      • chase

I gotta agree. Playing double duties (two different characters played by the same actor is the equivalent of pitching a no hitter and two home runs in the same game.)

    • Jason

Don’t worry, Terry has said in a few interviews that he will be submitting himself this year, but it will be in the Supporting Actor category.a

      • ken

thats too bad because he should/will lose to john noble whose walter bishop on fringe is the best acting on tv this sesason (also recently playing 2 distinct versions of the same character lately) i hope o’quinn goes for best actor and they can both, deservedly, win

      • Ruby

Agreed about John Noble. He is AMAZING (no offense to the also awesome Terry O’Quinn, but be prepared to lose!)

    • moonwvr

Even though I love Matthew Fox and his character Jack, Terry O’Quinn definitely deserves a Emmy. Some have complained that this season is lacking in material, but he has done a wonderful job with the Locke/Flocke characters.

      • Caleb Jones

true enough! O’Quinn would be my 2nd choice behind fox whose island character clearly matured and became wiser this season like his alternate.

      • laura g

and he was hit by a car….that episode was crazy good

  • dan

I think certain cast memebers deserve a nod and let me just say I love love love the show, but this season has not been up to par with others…ab eterno was fabulous of course but I just feel like this season has been chaotic with very little cohesion to the arcs…Last week was a perfect example…Charles Widemore this mysterious seemingly invisible character was shot and killed so suddenly that is kinda just seemed pointless…Seems latly that there is very little heart or thought put into killing off of the characters almost like they had to tie up to many storylines that they simply succeeded by killing off the character rathering than finishing the story…I think seasons 1, 2 and last are my favorites…hope this sunday is better than most of the others this year…

    • Dude

Totally see where you come from, but assuming it ends well, I would consider this season in the running as the best. The themes that the season has been developing have been incredible. And as far as the killing of the characters, Lost likes to balance surprise and meaning (and they can always finish an arc in sideways now). A show has to be dramatically unpredictable just as much as meaningful and all the deaths have raised the stakes considerably.

      • dan

I agree that there have been episodes this season that have been some of the best tv put on to date..and i love what each of the charcters has done..I alos understand that death is a necessary and I dont even care that they have killed most of the charcters, but its the manner of story telling that bothers me…while Jin and Suns was handled beautifuly and emotionally I felt that others were rushed since the writers didnt have enough time to close them off properly…I guess my complaint lies solely with the widemore..he to me was one of the most interesting characters on the show that was truly never flushed out..every season we assumed he was the big bad wolf and I always wondered what his end goal was and the explanation they gave in he past month has been less than weak…and he was a backbone of the show, nothing like zoe or any of his crew from this year that were easily killed off…

      • mamimo

        Re Dan & Dude
You both expressed my feelings. Boone, Charlie even Charolet (not a fav of mine) all had touching deaths. This season has been introduce characters we don’t need (ie:Dogan), quickly tell answers with no build up (ie the whispers)and kill off everyone with any emotional set up or reason (ie Illana)
        I still love Lost tho.

    • Mark

Sorry Cinderella. Lost isn’t supposed to be a fairy tale. Life doesn’t let you wrap up all of your storylines. Death happens and nobody can predict it.

      • Matthew’s fox

We’re talking about a TV show here, get a life Mark!

      • April C

Mark, I for one agree with you. I can’t stand all the Lost “fans” who claim to have loved the show forever, yet moan and complain when they don’t get their answers wrapped up neat with a little bow.

    • DogBoy

Dan— I completely agree with your statement. I would add that besides dispatching characters without benefit of “finishing” their storylines, the show abandoned much of what got viewers hooked. Their complete abandonment of the Dharma era on the island is the biggest injustice.

      • Johnification

Yeah, they went and abandoned that Dharma storyline by dedicating an entire season to it.

      • Caleb Jones

dharma was the island ‘s past. we know all we need to know about it now.

    • Kyle

I see where your going with that. Widmore has been built up as a big villain for what 3-4 years, and then after keeping us waiting for so long, he just gets three scenes in his exit episode. I know he’s not a main character or anything, but they built him up for so long, and it just seems a bit of a waste.

    • Calla

The thing about murder is that it is abrupt and not necessarily “led up to”. I wanted to know how Widmore got back to the island and how he knew what was coming – that was answered. I think we all knew it was possible he would die and I love the unexpectedness of how it happened. That seems far more interesting than a big build up knowing what’s about to happen

  • Tmoth

Can’t wait for Sunday night!!! Lost should win for best drama, but if we are talking best actor, while Lost has some worthy canidates, (pun intended) Walter Bishop ( I forget his real name) from Fringe should win hands down. What great range and depth of emotion he shows!

  • Sal

Good. I hope they win over that ridiculous Mad Men. But there are so many actors on Lost deserving awards!

  • jmo

I could easily see an emmy nod for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama for Titus W or Mark P. “Across the Sea” aside, each had only a few minutes and almost no insight into their character, yet both shined in every scene, IMHO.

    • jmo

Note: I liked Across the Sea but I felt their performances were more impressive in Ab Aeterno (sp).

  • CAM

LOST and its cast deserve a lot of Emmy love. So many great cast memebers and show that’s kept the audience guessing and devoted for years.

  • Sabrina

It had BETTER win best drama! And I second the nom for Yunjin Kim…though I think she should’ve won for the Season 4 finale. Not sure she had enough to do this season…

    • Dave

Yunjin Kim was totally robbed of a nomination for season 4. What a travesty.

    • Caleb Jones

Fox was better in that season.

  • Alicia

If it never wins another Emmy, “Lost” will still be one of the best television shows ever.

  • LostGrrl

I’m hoping they get nominated for a Golden Globe, since they honor cast emsembles. Can’t do much better than LOST.

    • Bobby’s Robot

I believe you’re thinking of the SAG Awards.
