Sean Hayes to host '64th Annual Tony Awards' in June

Tony Award nominee Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) will host The 64th Annual Tony Awards, to be broadcast live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in New York, on Sunday June 13.  The annual awards show honors achievements on Broadway.

Hayes is currently starring on Broadway in Promises, Promises alongside Kristin Chenoweth. He received a Tony Award nomination for the role, as well as nominations from the Drama League and the Outer Critics Circle. The actor recently received some unwanted attention when Newsweek published an opinion piece that said openly homosexual actors can never be convincing in heterosexual roles, singling out Hayes in Promises, Promises and Jonathan Groff on Glee.

Sorry, knowing that he’s gay, I just can’t believe him in that role.

    • Ashwarya

It is sad to know people like you even exist… judge him for his acting not his sexual orientation….

    • rayna

ok, so knowing actors are straight, can you believe them in gay roles?

      • Chloe

        um, neil patrick harris, hello?

    • Bobby’s Robot

I believe DFSF is making a joke related to the idiotic Newsweek article.

I was in new york recently and saw the play “Promises, Promises” and Sean Hayes did a FANTASTIC job!

I’m not easy to please either because I was a drama geek in high school and still am today quite a bit. So don’t go dissing his performance if you haven’t seen it!

no one blinked an eye at Rock Hudson or Mr. Brady. If an actor or actress is good, then they are believable in any role!

You hit the nail on the head, Cory. Example: Dick Sargent took over the role of Darren Stevens in “Bewitched” and was completely UNconvincing in the role. But Agnes Moorhead on the very same show was totally believeable as Samantha’s mom, Endora. “Bewitched” had the distinction of having the most gay actors in a single show, but I think that’s probably been surpassed. (Moorehead, Paul Lynde, Sargent, and Diane Murphy, one of the twins who played Tabitha) That said, I think the original poster was probably joking.

      Ha ha.

Humor and wit are lost on this crowd, I guess.

Excellent choice for host this year. I love the Tony telecast.
As for the gay actors believable in straight roles issue, well… how narrow are we?

  • Matt

The show will be interesting, but Neil Patrick Harris will be missed.

  • jane

I can’t wait to see Sean as host! He’ll do a fabulous job, and I’m really hoping to see him in ‘Promises, Promises’ sometime soon.

  • Chas

Good choice. I just can’t see a straight guy in this role anyway. Way too unbelievable.

  • SheQuon

Articles like Newsweek are the reason why Hayes waited so ridiculously, embarrassingly long to come out. Someone said a gay writer may have written that stupid article, which is even worse–not that that excuses his cowardly hiding for so long.

    • Ember

Did you even read the article? Because, if you did, you (like so many others) completely misunderstood the writers intent.

  • leo

well, thank Cher they put a gay guy in the role of Tony Awards host. i’m sorry, but as camp as Hugh Jackman is, knowing that he’s married, i can’t believe him in that role.

  • Tony

Don’t these people ever stop giving each other awards?

    • r

Oh yeah, those crazy Broadway performers get so much press and so many televised award shows…

  • kelly

Oh pleases he is great at everything he dose. Oh even care’s if he’s or she is gay they all can act.Plus I love Sean so much.

  • Dignan

No NPH? I won’t be watching.

  • RekcufYeh

Even knowing they’re gay doesn’t effect the believability for me, I swatch old Rock Hudson films and he’s still believable as straight and I still enjoy old reruns of Bewitched and Brady Bunch. But if being gay becomes such a major part of their branding (Rosie O’Donnell, Ellen Degeneres, Nathan Lane), there might be just too much baggage and an uphill battle to convince otherwise.Though I could see Nathan Lane and Rosie O’Donnell play husband and wife oddly enough. Other actors disappear in their roles and it doesn’t matter. So it depends. But there’s actors that have other type of baggage too. And ultimately it depends on how good an actor they are. The performance will be the determining factor.

I don’t watch the Tony Awards anymore. Sean Hayes must be the new producer of TV Land new show, “Hot In Cleveland” with the three girls and Betty White. I will not watch it this summer. I guess TV Land wanted Betty to help them give a big boost rating just like she did for NBC’s Saturday Night Live. It is about almost 14 million viewers watch SNL when Betty was on May 8th. I don’t think TV Land can pick the rating too well because they are on cable network.

The Tonys just keep getting better and better! Aside from Sean Hayes, celebrities scheduled to appear include everyone from Bernadette Peters to Denzel Washington to Justin Bartha. Its shaping up to be an amazing night!

It’s called ACTING, people! I’ve seen clips and he looks wonderful! Sean, if you are reading this I am coming from Iowa with my two daughters to see your Friday night performance this week. PLEASE don’t have an understudy that night! Last year I missed both Sutton Foster and Christopher Sieber on the night I saw Shrek. We would be so disappointed to miss you!
