'Big Brother' returns to CBS on July 8

big-brother-11Image Credit: John P. Filo/CBSIt’s our duty at Hollywood Insider to report the big headlines in television each and every day. Other times, we just look for an excuse to run a picture of Julie Chen. Today, you get both! CBS announced that the 12th edition of Big Brother will premiere on Thursday, July 8. The network will air the reality show three nights a week on Wednesdays (8-9 p.m. ET/PT), Thursdays (eviction show from 8-9 p.m.) and Sundays (8-9 p.m).

CBS used to air BB on Tuesdays but the network wanted to keep its winning line-up of dramas on that night intact for the summer.

The network will announce the new cast at a later date. Last year’s edition of BB posted a 7 percent increase in viewers (7.08 million from 6.60 million), and a 4 percent jump in adults 18-49 (2.5 rating/8 share from 2.4/07).  Each of the three weekly broadcasts also posted summer-to-summer growth. The reality show follows a group of people living in a house outfitted with dozens of cameras and microphones; the last remaining houseguest receives a prize of $500,000.

Big Brother is exec produced by Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan in association with Endemol U.S.A. And yes, Chen will return as host.

Its shows like Big Brother that hasten the downfall of Western Civilization. But Heaven help me, I can’t resist it. I anticipate each new season and watch religiously all summer. It is my guiltiest of guilty pleasures.

I just hope they dont do the Coup Detat this year. Last year’s viewers voted for the “cute” guy and it messed everything up. And Chima was HUMILIATED because the producers and their scheming took away her hard-earned power. Yes she reacted poorly but she EARNED that power fair and square and they humiliated her.

      • jurby

Chima was a poor loser and couldn’t deal with the fact that her power got yanked out from under her after all of her scheming. obviously you didn’t see her whiny ‘little’ hissyfit not long afterward that resulted the producers yanking her from the show. Chima was a diva who was used to getting her way and when she didn’t get her way she behaved like a toddler throwing a tantrum in a store because he/she didn’t get the candy/toy he/she wanted. oh poor Chima… NOT!!!

      • deedee

you are so delusional….time to take your meds!!!!!!

      • Anna

It’s called BIG BROTHER for a reason.

      • ChrissyB

regardless of the coupe d’tat, Chima behaved badly. she is delusional if she thought that if any other contestant had gotten that power that they would not have used it.

      • natasha

Yeah, Jeff was cute, but he was also the only player that wasn’t a snake. that’s why he got votes, then he won comps, and people got scared and voted him out.

Chima was humilated, and she deserved it. She acted like a spoiled brat.

      • John Snark

could it be that jeff got it because chima and her crew were just as$holes?

    • Alan

I agree. While the aforementioned “downfall of Western Civilization” is actually caused by the far tawdrier VH1 reality shows, I’ve watched Big Brother since day 1 of season 1 yet I’ve never admitted it to anyone and never will.

      • smasha

Love love love BB, been a fan since day one. Can. Not. Wait!!!!!!!!!

    • Derek

Ha ha oh this made me laugh so hard. These are my sentiments exactly. I know the show is trash, but it is SO much fun to watch. Drama makes great television

  • naomi

I hope they get a better cast than last year…….Ans maybe they will stop rigging the show and picking the winners from the production booth

    • Kvivik

Highly doubtful. But I still wanna know if anyone will be as blatant in throwing challenges as Jeff was all season. I want the evil fun of a game that was in the early seasons. Now is much too serious with the treachery. :-(

    • Mary

you mean the rigged marriage proposal. I don’t like Jessie but thank goodness he bailed on Nat I would have burned that house down if she won. Last years cats yeck except Jordan and Jeff made me laugh even though they played lousy

  • Kyle

I cant wait for this :D

  • Kpryde

    YAY!!!

  • John

I agree with Naomi…last year was totally rigged (MICHELLE was ROBBED! I’m not bitter though :) ) But a new season of BB is always a good thing!

  • Melissa

Please tell me you are going to have weekly blogs from Julie Chen. Those were so much fun to read last year!

  • AJ

I really hope they put 2 (hot) gay men in the house, for once! The only time they did so far was briefly during the Couples season but after only a couple of episodes they forced one of them to leave the house early with no explanation. I think it was to avoid any possible “action”. But given how many BB viewers are gay men, they should reward us with a little of eye candy and Man on Man action on Showtime 2′s After dark.

    • to AJ

Agreed. Just for once can’t they cast some rugged, macho gay instead of the same old prissy queens?

    • gato

He wanted to leave/ family emergency I think

    • AcaseofGeo

I think they need THREE gay men, all hot and horny. And you know what pigs men are. One is gonna get left out and throw a hissy fit. Great idea!!!!

  • Daniel

Does anyone know if Big Brother after dark is airing this summer?

  • Barry

    More “reality” CRAP!

  • Steve

Big Brother is aweful but I can’t help but watch. Chima deserved every bit of what she got. Yes, the producers had to edit what the regular viewers saw. There was no way in Hell they could have shown what she really did. She was a poor loser and a total waste of space. I do wish they would cast better though. The “gay” people they cast always seem to be the “super” gay ones. Why can’t they show a gay guy who doesn’t act all girly. Over the top maybe?

    • Mary

The whole Chima diva thing was the best part of the whole season. I LMAO when she got called in to diary room and shown door. Other hilarious bit was the three ditzy females holding a funeral for Jessie and he could care less.

  • Matt

Most underrated reality show around. Also, the most edited reality show of all time. What they show on television is almost nothing about what is actually going on in the house.

    • Julie

This is so true. The worse part of BB is all of the people that think what they see on TV is the whole story. Half the time the producers show events totally out of sequence & cut and paste comments made by the HG

  • Kim from Texas

I am very excited that Big Brother is coming back, but why do we have to wait until July. The summer is already half-over by July! Big Brother is the only reality show where you can watch the house guests live 24-hours a day! It really does give you a much fairer perspective of the contestants than other reality shows.

  • Mary

My fav reality show really used to be BB until Evel Dick won and it was obvious show forced the win.
Now my fav is TAR love watching all the places they go and traditions they have to learn and the bickering in the taxis. Cant write better script than that except Catie answering about maps on teh Miss Teen comp

  • Ali

What are the odds Russell Hantz is a cast member this season? He creates so much drama he would be perfect for BB!

  • pcarroll

They need to have an over 50 BB. I might not win, but I would give it a try. Maybe they should challenge an entire school (teachers) to participate in this. BB at ______ Elementary School as participants. Give the money won back to the school district. We would work our butts off for that money.

    • laura

Does anyone know what Julie had.
