Now this is what I call a killer twist: Julie Benz is returning to Dexter — as Rita! Sources confirm to me exclusively that Benz Read the full post.

He has to be dreaming about her then, right??? I can’t wait for the new season!!

  • Ryan

Keck confirmed that her funeral will be in the premiere, so maybe it will be an open-coffin funeral.

    • Stacey

I guess that makes sense since Trinity loved to cut the femural artery.

  • JamiesFanGirl

Spiffy! Now just as long as they continue to bring Harry back…;)

  • Lisa

I bet it will be flashbacks. Or in Dexter’s imagination. He seems the type to imagine (in detail) her death scene.

    • tvgirl48

I assume it’ll be an imagination thing since they already did that with the Ice Truck Killer in the second season premiere.

  • Mike

Probably in flashbacks and to make one good-lookin’ corpse at the funeral.

  • Jason

    Her twin sister duh.

    • Amiee

I realize you’re probably joking but you never know these days. Fortunately, I have too much faith in the Dexter writers to believe they would do something so cheesy and stupid.

      • Dirk Funk

That’s an odd comment, considering Dexter has been pure cheese since season 3.

      • AT

This last season of Dexter was amazing! Pure cheese?! The writing has been excellent. Yeah, the third was its weakest, but it was still pretty good overall.

      • Rayhaan

DEXTER?? CHEESY!!! never!! this is by far 1 of the best serie’s this world has ever seen!! yes the 3rd season was a lil under-done, but not 1 series can compare to the genius behind DEXTER!!!

      • Dark Passenger

Hmmmm I think I see shrink wrap, and duck tape in this guys future……

  • Stacey

Flashbacks to the day he met her, the day she gave birth to Harrison, recalls of their honeymoon, etc. You know, the usual reflections of guilt when someone realises they took love for granted, etc.

    • Kathy Bergeron

I agree with Stacy–flashbacks brought on by Dexter’s realization that she was the only thing that was keeping him even halfway human.

  • Andrew

Well, depending on how much time has passed between the finale and premiere, it might just be corpse duty. Other shows have done that.

    • orville

I agree. Didn’t they say that the premiere will be mere minutes after he discovered her body? She might even still be in the bathtub. Also, Ausiello hinted that Dexter himself might a suspect in the murder. So I image there will be some morgue time during the investigation.

  • stef24

I cheered my heart out when Rita was murdered. I was so bored with her character from the beginning. All she did was make pancakes and waffles and then after Harrison was born, whine. She did (finally) get some balls this past season and start speaking up. But it was just too late for me. I was bored to tears with her…that said, my guess is she’s coming back in visions to visit Dexter…and I LIKE this! (if I’m correct) I really want to hear what Rita has to say now that she knows Dex is a killer and that he killed her ex.

    • @Delena

I loved Rita. She helped make Dexter an actual human being. She will be dearly missed by me next season.

      • Mommahurley

I agree with you, In fact I almost don’t want to watch it anymore becuase without Rita, the thing that shows us, Dexter’s got a kind, loving side even if he doesn’t realize it…he really is just a monster with a very bad mental illness.

Without Rita, what is there to like about Dexter? I know there are many men out there who just want to see the gruesome kills, and don’t like Rita becuase she actually tried to help him become a man, and most men would rather stay completely self centered babies who do exactly what they want whenever they want and only want women to pick up after them and give them sex….but there are at least half of the audience who actually enjoyed the torment that Dexter felt from wanting love and committment in his life, and really being ashamed of this Dark Passenger.

Without Rita, how are we to believe that he’s anything more than a sick psychopath who kills people?

  • Jeneric

I think Dexter will realize she knew about him or at least had suspicions and he will try to piece it together…I think he will be concerned that he is more transparent than he originally thought.

STOP SPOILING TV SHOWS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF EW.COM. YOU, or the editors, CAN CHOOSE TO SAY “Spoiler for Dexter’ and then the link can take us to the content of the spoiler.

YOU SPOILED MY DAY, and MY SUMMER of HAPPY ANTICIPATION. I wish I could customize the EW.com home page to filter out Ausiello Files-related news!!!!!

    • Missy

No offense, but how long does a spoiler stay a spoiler? The season finale was over 5 months ago – I could see if the finale was just a week or so ago, but I would say when you’re several months down the line you can’t expect to be shielded from new plot twists of ongoing television shows. HOWEVER, I do agree that the Ausiello Files articles should only show the headline on the front page – often times the first lines of the articles contain information that those who like to remain surprised don’t necessarily want to know. The element of surprise even on future shows (like knowing Julie Benz will make an appearance) is nice to have still and it’s kind of unavoidable when it’s part of the title.

      • Bill C.

At least until the DVDs have been out for a few weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dexter has more viewers than Showtime does.

    • tvgirl48

I think it’s just a natural caveat when frequenting EW.com. Ausiello spoils things, that’s his job.

      • Kathy Bergeron

And he always posts a warning.

  • Melora

Don’t care to speculate, so long as Dexter comes back soon; I am having a rough time going cold turkey without Dexter, and without Big Love; why do they have such long hiatus? Not fair.

  • Rita

Further, with season 5 looming and knowing that most cable series go a full 6 seasons, with the passing (maybe) of Rita, this was needed to help Dexter to deal with his life, bc he LOVED his life w/her and loved her as well, and the loss came beyond anything he thought would happen to him, bc he was always alone and kept his “secret” a SECRET. Therefore, not having to involve anyone in his life and having no emotional responsibility to anyone, he thought his life w/Rita would be untouched if he kept his secret A secret (aka the “shed” in the backyard). I am thinking season 5 is the long beginning to the end of this INCREDIBLE series as we know it. Stay tuned…..

    • samantha

I hope not! Dexter is one of the few shows that is actually getting better each season-I thought last season was by far the strongest yet.

      • Merideth

Agreed. Dexter, unlike many shows, keeps getting better and last season was absolute brilliance. I can’t WAIT to find out what season 5 will bring!!

  • Rita

(1ST PART to the above! SORRT!!)
A dream sequence could be done, but that’s a typical storyline that a lot of shows do, so I am ruling that out until the fall premiere. I always believe personally that if someone dies of a violent nature, the people they touched while living will have to do better and be better in there lives moving forward, or karma will be sure to follow. With Dexter, I believe this will be the case, and HOW they will they do it, one will never know, BUT one thing is certain, this looks to be the catalyst to help Dexter deal with his life as a whole as opposed to having 2 parts that are so mutually exclusive to each other that its debilitating.

  • RyRyNYC

he has sex with the corpse.

    • Pat D.

      Post. of. the. year.

      ROTFLMAO

    • bludSpat

      WOW! he has my vote…

Insightful post to what a disturbed serial killer might actually do!

      …and completely disgusting o_O
