Now this is what I call a killer twist: Julie Benz is returning to Dexter — as Rita! Sources confirm to me exclusively that Benz Read the full post.

I see a shower scene where Rita steps out of the shower and Dexter was just dreaming last season. Yeh I know, same as Dallas with Pam and Bobby

  • Marion

Dexter watching videos makes sense (as someone already said). Dreams would not be uncommon. That’s different from the conversations he has with Harry and quite likely.

  • Auth

CBS has consigned this exnellect show to the 10pm Sunday graveyard spot which from September until end of December, NFL season, will mean the show probably won’t be on the air til well past that late hour. DOOMED.

  • Jamie B.

    Agreed.

  • AT

This last season of Dexter was amazing! Pure cheese?! The writing has been excellent. Yeah, the third was its weakest, but it was still pretty good overall.

  • Rayhaan

DEXTER?? CHEESY!!! never!! this is by far 1 of the best serie’s this world has ever seen!! yes the 3rd season was a lil under-done, but not 1 series can compare to the genius behind DEXTER!!!

  • Dark Passenger

Hmmmm I think I see shrink wrap, and duck tape in this guys future……

  • Wickeddoll

I have nothing against Benz in particular, but I didn’t like her on Buffy and Angel, only because she sounded like a California surfer girl *all the time* – even in the distant past. So I never bought her as a 400-year-old vampire. Ever.

  • Mikey M

I agree. Love Benz but they made her character very naggy and unlikeable.

  • Dexfan

Yes, totally, Rita was awaful – Benz needs to go back to the Wisteria Lane, where she belongs! How come all the queer characters get send away or get nothing to do on DH?

  • I Heart Dexter

ditto! I found her extremely ANNOYING!

  • Craig

Wickeddoll: You didn’t like Benz because she didn’t sound like an authentic 400 year old vampire!? OMG, you made my day. You are hilarious. I guess you of all people would know what a fictional creature from an over-rated TV show that aired on prime time to a mindless, trendy audience would sound like, right? *shakes head*

  • Niles

She is hot in her undies… Put a little more syrup on her :-)

  • JF

Craig, you reference to Buffy and Angel is so off the mark I have to wonder if: 1) you never watched either show and never read any critiques and/or 2) you were recently dropped on your head by your mother.

  • Karyn

I agree…didn’t like the Rita character. Too whiney. Wish the character was not coming back.

  • Alisa

The answer is clear: Rita comes back in the form of flashbacks as Dexter learns to grieve.

How is Rita a “screechy bore?” I love Dexter, and I thought Julie Benz was radiant and brought some needed balance to Dexter’s dark side and helped humanize him. I really don’t get all these comments complaining that her character was annoying or irritating. If you truly think that then (A) you are identifying way too much with a serial killer AND (B) you must have never been in a relationship in your life. I don’t know of any man or woman in real life who would tolerate Dexter’s bizarre and anti-social behavior–and I am not even referring to his killings. Any husband/wife or girlfriend/boyfriend would be upset, confused, and concerned if their partner was taking off all the time for no good reason, lying, ignoring them and their children, and acting chilly and emotionally distant. There has to be some realism on the show, or else it just becomes a cartoon. I think Rita’s concern about Dexter was an attempt at realism. Although, she was actually far more sympathetic and understanding toward Dexter than a real life partner would be. The truth is that Dexter would never been in a relationship in real life because most people would find him weird and off-putting and wouldn’t want to be with him, let alone marrying him. He would only have a relationship, if he could fake charm long enough to trick someone into a relationship where he could then exert terror and control over them to trap them, like John Lithgow’s character did with his wife and family. I like Dexter’s character, but how many times can you watch him track some bad guy down and kill him/her without some other issues or conflicts going on in the show? What makes Dexter interesting is that there is more to him than just some whack-job serial killer, and his family life with Rita was part of his other side.

  • mads

I feel like I’m the only one who liked Rita and was really upset when she died.

  • Juanita

I liked Rita at the beginning, but the wrote the character’s very gradual morph into a domineering, bossy wife with such skill! Before I knew it, I didnt like her. Very nicely done, screenwriter! :)

  • Whatever

    Best idea ever !

  • Merideth

Agreed. Dexter, unlike many shows, keeps getting better and last season was absolute brilliance. I can’t WAIT to find out what season 5 will bring!!

  • CE

    Two words: Gaius Baltar.

    Hallucinations. Okay that’s three.

  • Bill C.

At least until the DVDs have been out for a few weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dexter has more viewers than Showtime does.

  • bludSpat

    WOW! he has my vote…

Insightful post to what a disturbed serial killer might actually do!

    …and completely disgusting o_O

  • kitty

maybe it will show her death at the hands of the trinity killer. One episode….. think about it.

  • @Delena

I loved Rita. She helped make Dexter an actual human being. She will be dearly missed by me next season.

  • Alisa McGeorge

  • Mommahurley

I agree with you, In fact I almost don’t want to watch it anymore becuase without Rita, the thing that shows us, Dexter’s got a kind, loving side even if he doesn’t realize it…he really is just a monster with a very bad mental illness.

Without Rita, what is there to like about Dexter? I know there are many men out there who just want to see the gruesome kills, and don’t like Rita becuase she actually tried to help him become a man, and most men would rather stay completely self centered babies who do exactly what they want whenever they want and only want women to pick up after them and give them sex….but there are at least half of the audience who actually enjoyed the torment that Dexter felt from wanting love and committment in his life, and really being ashamed of this Dark Passenger.

Without Rita, how are we to believe that he’s anything more than a sick psychopath who kills people?

  • ashlee

I agree with Alisa and LDSK. The only way to bring Rita back is in flashbacks as Dex struggles with the memories and grief/guilt he feels for the first time. Very clever indeed.

  • Pat D.

Well, remember….a certain dude in Dexter was once an undertaker on another premium cable show…. =)

  • bridget

I have sympathy – everyone hates spoilers – but if you’re waiting to watch a show on DVD, esp one that gets as much press as Dexter, then I think it’s on you to avoid reading anything that might have information you don’t want to see. Headlines or not, we’re talking about a columnist who specializes in giving inside info on shows; seems his stuff might be something to avoid entirely for anyone who’s trying to avoid learning the plot twists of a show that ended months ago. I don’t even go online when I haven’t yet watched an episode of a show I don’t want ruined bc I always end up seeing something accidentally. Also, if you don’t want to wait for the DVD, Amazon OnDemand has them right away and I think it’s the same price or close.

  • Julia b

m mallyn – I think you are right on target!!!!!!

  • Yo

Im thinking he was dreaming the whole scene has a dreamy look to it i actually agree with the nitemare comment

  • Yo

that is actually a good twist
