Whether a show has a 5 year plan or a 5 week plan, it still needs to be compelling, week after week, to keep viewers. No only did this show lose momentum after a really intruiging pilot, but some of the characters were about as interesting as watching paint peel and some the casting decisions were questionable. I’ve liked Joseph Fiennes in other things, but he was deadly dull here.
What I found frustrating was that the central relationship in the show, that of Mark and Olivia, was supposed to be so important, so vital and in such jeopardy based on their flash forwards. Yet their fates were completely under their control. Mark – don’t drink. Olivia – don’t get involved with another man. Oversimplifying, yes, but it wasn’t as if they were trying to avoid death, like Demitri. Way too much time was spent on Mark and Olivia, to the detriment of other story lines.
A friend suggested this show needed a little Jack Bauer and I couldn’t disagree. A little action, now and then, is required.
I fully agree! Thank you for stating this so eloquently!
You, Marlene, are a GENIUS. TV showrunners should hire you to point out the obvious. Bravo!
I think this show might have been better received if they had waited until after Lost ended before premiering. Having it on alongside Lost was just too much, people were focused elsewhere. The show also had some writing problems but it was improving. Another season might have helped but I think timing hurt it the most.
I think there is more than one reason it failed. Regarding the planning ahead issue, I think that it forced the story into a box that didn’t take into account what the reaction to the show would be. For instance, there were quite a few characters introduced early on that just completely brought the momentum to a halt. Then they’d show up here and there to waste time when you really wanted to see what was happening with the compelling characters. Unfortunately, it takes a few episodes to figure out who is who and then because they were adhering to a five year plan, they couldn’t drop the characters or subplots that weren’t working out. Secondly, they never seem to make this a global issue: no ongoing news reports considering the devastation and loss of life, no public reaction, no evidence of any kind of societal change. When you consider the magnitude of the disaster the flashforward was, the reaction we saw was not porportionate. Thirdly, the hiatus certainly didn’t help. When you have such a labyrinthine plot, it’s really hard to just jump back into it. But, I have to say, I think the ratings for the last couple of episodes really reflect the fact that viewers knew the show had been cancelled. It’s hard to keep up your interest when you know that you’re going to be left with questions that’ll never be answered.
I’ll miss Flash Forward. It wasn’t perfect, but it had its moments. Problems I saw with the ratings and quality of the show were: the increasing weakness of Thursday 8pm for ABC (poor Ugly Betty!), the super long hiatus didn’t pan out for this serialized show with no lead-in, you can tell by the Fake American accents that a majority of the cast were from the UK (especially the one with the super thick Scottish accent!), the beginning episodes had horrible dubbing problems and sound often didn’t sync with lips, and there’s too much filler to stretch out to 22 episodes.
V and Flash Forward had the same plot-driven structure and they both had the same momentum going, but V thankfully didn’t have to stretch their first season arc to 10 extra episodes.
Unfortunately these dubbing problems have been continuing even into the last episode. So careless.
i tuned in to Flashforward because i read the book and thought the science should be compelling to viewers – the producers should have set this up as a two year plan and kept the story tight. think how much better Lost would have been if they had it planned and plotted for just four years and then end it.
I gave the show a chance–I was with it until about 6 weeks ago. But I knew something wasn’t quite right when I realized I couldn’t remember any of the characters names from one week to the next (except Mark and Simcoe). No, I don’t have short-term memory loss, but I guess none of the characters stood out enough for me to get involved.
I think a show like Heroes could have done well with a 5 year plan they really didn’t know what to do after the stellar first season, I think Flash Forward just couldn’t keep up the momentum it built up and it will be forgotten as the next big show of the season comes up.
H Dawg – great comment, and I completely agree with you! No one could have said it better.
Watching the old promos for this show almost hurts seeing the faith ABC had for it so early on. I really wish they would give it another chance or allow another network to. With such a great cast I really believe it has potential.
FlashForward’s biggest problem was ABC. The second Braga wouldn’t come over from Fox and they stuck Marc Guggenheim (co-creator of Eli Stone) in as co-showrunner, they established a pattern of interfering. How can a show have a vision if it changes showrunners twice in its first season and goes on a huge hiatus. They also made a mistake marketing it as the new LOST. Why only court a very specific audience of a niche show? The shows have nothing in common beside Sonya Walger and Dominic Monaghan (and I caught Kim Dickens in an episode). There’s no magic or gods on FlashForward.
what hurt ff were episodes from 2 to 11, so badly written that the audience ran away.
the jappo girl and the doctor? the worst storyline ever, and she was just a bad rip-off of sun in lost.
in the end, what killed ff is bad writing.
But nowhere near as badly written as your comment. “the jappo girl”? Really? What, are you 12?
hahahaha
I agree on the hiatus thing, that’s what killed it. I remember choosing to watch this over “community” on nbc and when the hiatus thing happened, I completely forgot about it and the plot and yeah…the show should not have gone on hiatus.
It was the four month break that killed the show. FF really had potential! Such a shame.
Do you think maybe ratings were down last week cuz people knew the show was cancelled? I hesitated to watch, figuring why bother? While I wanted to know more about how the story was going to progress, if they hadn’t planned to end it this early, will anything really be resolved in a satisfactory way?
I liked the show and watched every episode and I couldn’t wait for it to be over. It got better in the 2nd part but it wasn’t moving fast enough maybe it was the hiatus if it would have been like 24 no breaks more people could have caught on.
