Image Credit: Bob D'Amico/ABC; Ben Leuner/AMC; Patrick Ecclesine/Fox; David M. Russell/CBS; Bill Records/NBCThe fifth and final installment of my Dream Emmy Nominations has arrived and, as you can see, I saved the biggest races for last: best drama and comedy series. Emmy voters, repeat after me: “I promise to transfer these recommendations onto my official ballot when it arrives next week. It may very well be the only thing standing in the way of a Hank sweep come nominations day July 8.” You think I’m kidding about that last bit…okay, I’m kidding. But you get the point.
Best Drama Series
* Breaking Bad: TV’s most nerve-racking hour hit a new creative high in year 3.
* Damages: Bounced back from a meh season 2 with a mystery that was taut, suspenseful, and timely.
* Friday Night Lights: A different team, but still victorious.
* The Good Wife: Single-handedly raised the bar for procedurals on TV.
* Mad Men: For a season rife with breakups (Sterling Cooper, Don/Betty) I never felt more committed.
* True Blood: The Maryann plot meandered a bit, but the season as a whole was bloody brilliant.
Best Comedy Series
* Better Off Ted: The best show that no one (with a Nielsen box) watched.
* Chuck: I spy a consistently awesome and hilarious show in need of some long-overdue Emmy love.
* Cougar Town: Overcame a rough start to emerge as the year’s biggest comedic surprise.
* Glee: The rare show that lives up to its title week in and week out.
* Modern Family: Brought the family comedy into the 21st century.
* Parks and Recreation: Who would’ve thought: NBC’s funniest Thursday comedy doesn’t have Rock or Office in its title?

LOST???
Totally agree, quincy! Where’s the Lost love? 6 years of a series that changed the TV landscape and fostered a whole host of wannabes, and you only select 2 supporting actors for noms and no one else? Think you missed the boat on this one, Michael.
Lost will definately get the love it deserves in the acting category, but I hope it is nominated for best Drama also. But where is Dexter? This season was so amazing, and I see he didn’t even include John Lithgow in his “Best Supporting Actor” race, even though he WON the Golden Globe. Ausiello, I’m taking you’re recommendations with a tablespoon of salt…though THANK YOU for the FNL and Better Off Ted love…they deserve it.
Lost will be nominated, it has been nominated several times for best drama including 1 win and the voters are not going to miss the opportunity to send out a groundbreaking show with some emmy love. Also I am sure that True Blood will not be nominated, as a fan I hope it is, but i just can’t picture a vampire show getting nominated by those stuffy emmy voters.
I’m a huge fan of True Blood, but there is no way in heck that it had a better season than LOST. There’s no way to compare camp melodrama to the human drama that was the final season of LOST.
Much better list – except it’s missing Rescue Me. True Blood is a good show, but not worthy of Emmy consideration…everytime I hear Bill say “Sookie” it makes me laugh and it’s not supposed to.
Matt- John Lithgow is entering in the Guest Actor category.
Thanks Andrew M, he certainly deserves recognition for being my favorite TV villian next to Ben Linus (wait, turns out Ben wasn’t a villian?) He was in the season so much, he should almost enter himself into the best actor category…but he will take the best guest actor award, he has to. I’ll never watch “3rd Rock from the Sun” or “Harry and the Hendersons” the same way again.
Lost will probably be there, but it’s as more of a “lifetime achievement award” than for this season — which has no business at all on the list.
Lets not kid ourselves. Lost didn’t change television. It may have proved that America can handle “smart” shows but television hasn’t changed because of Lost.
Dream ballot for best drama? You must be kidding or high! Where’s House? Have you already forgotten this year’s People’s choice award for best drama show? Uh. yup. House.
um vikki sixx – you are stating your OPINION of lost. i think it is a great show and have loved it from beginning to end. this is not because i can’t face the truth or whatever, i just have a different opinion than you. get over yourself. oh and be better informed – the creators decided on the end date, not the network.
that would be awesome if modern family and couger town (both ABC shows) were both nominated for best comedy!!
I agree! I saw this list in the magazine last night and couldn’t believe Lost wasn’t on your list. It is ridiculous.
Jen, you’re an idiot, you are the one who needs to get over yourself. Obviously, you’re the only one still bashing Lost. You were probably too dumb to understand it, so I’ll use little words. Like, yes way was it better the the other shows listed.
I think Lost should definitely be on there – and I wasn’t even crazy about the ending. Even when it was at it’s ebb, Lost consistently broke new ground for TV, challenging and entertaining it’s viewers with excellent writing and great acting. With the exception of the Bai Ling and Nikki/Paulo episodes. It made us THINK, unlike most other shows. I didn’t like the ending, but it was the best show on TV, and should be nominated (and win).
And I realize that you say you watch and enjoy Lost, but I don’t necessarily believe that’s true. And if it is, then I agree with other posters, who say that you must just not understand it. I’m not saying that every Lost viewer should think that it deserves the Emmy, but to accuse those of us who DO think it’s deserving, of only believing so because it makes us cry lets me know that you DON’T understand. It’s the reasons behind my crying, Jen, that clue me in to it’s true worth, and superiority.
Jen, is it sad in the world you live in?
Lost fans are becoming an embarrassing group…if it takes a tv show to make you a better human being I feel very sorry for you. Lost was an epic fail this year they totally changed it to level of Ghost Whisper.
God, Lost fans are a truly awful bunch, aren’t they? I’m sure there must be some decent ones out there, but I’m not seeing any here.
how are lost fans awful? how about the people who tell lost fans that they only like lost because they are too stupid or delusional to understand that it isn’t actually good? i don’t care if other people don’t like the show but don’t tell me i am wrong somehow for liking it. learn the difference between facts and opinions.
Jen ROCKS… the only person on this damn string that know what they are talking about
i am a crazy lost fan lol. But it hasnt been THAT entertaining since season 3! stupid time traveling, stupid kate emotion, stupid jin and sun being apart, stupid fact of smoke monster, stupid fact of island!
Ha, I agree that Lost needs to be nominated and I can only imagine when ausiello was writing this he must have been thinking “well the first ten pages of comments are going to be filled with Lost fans calling for my head.”
I agree Lost needs to be on the list , but True Blood is not a “super-campy crap show about vampires and sex.” If you want that, watch Twilight. As for me True Blood is my guilty pleasure.
Agree!!!!!! LOST NEEDS TO BE NOMINATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad LOST was first on the comment board. Truly groundbreaking television. this should be its year.
Totally agree. This was the last season of “Lost” and it was an excellent one, climaxing in a finale full of suspense, mystery, romance and emotion. While its complex themes and mind-boggling mysteries certainly kept me entranced, it was the wonderfully developed characters that made the show truly special. This is the last chance the Emmys have to honor Lost, so I really hope they do not ignore this groundbreaking show.
Was lost intentionally left off the list to provoke this very debate? Just wondering?
are you freaking kidding me? what a joke! umm hello LOST!!!!!!!
Supernatural is more like it. This show is amazing and has been overlooked by Emmy voters far too long. Critics love it and the fans are loyal. How about showing them some love instead of the same ol’ same ol’.
LOST???
Totally agree, quincy! Where’s the Lost love? 6 years of a series that changed the TV landscape and fostered a whole host of wannabes, and you only select 2 supporting actors for noms and no one else? Think you missed the boat on this one, Michael.
Drama:
Lost, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Damages
Comedy:
Chuck, Glee, Modern Family, Better Off Ted, Community, Parks & Rec
Bfleet has the right list for certain!
Yeah Quincy, I fully expected LOST to be on this dream list. Consistently challenging, intelligent, emotional with exceptional production values LOST has forever changed the face of seruialized TV. It did win the Emmy it’s first year and is deserving of some final Emmy love..nice to see a LOST fan was the FIRST to respond
no freaking WAY it was better than the things listed. get over your fandom.
Sorry Jen, but I have no intention of “getting over” my “fandom.” Why should I? I am proud of my “fandom” for such an excellent show. I suspect you just didn’t understand the show, so you weren’t able to appreciate it. Lost should be nominated (and win).
MDS, sorry to burst your bubble, but just because a show is groundbreaking there is no guarantee that it will be recognized by the Emmys. Exhibit A: “The Wire” is almost always mentioned among the top five shows of the decade, if not the history of television, and it never won a single Emmy, and I think was nominated once for writing. Just because “Lost” was groundbreaking – and for the record, it’s my favorite show and I completely agree – doesn’t mean it will get the recognition it deserves.
Matt- John Lithgow is entering in the Guest Actor category.
Yeah, I wish Lost was there, too, because sorry, but The Good Wife might be good television, but there’s no way it trumps Lost. Also, I love Friday Night Lights, and I loved this season, but Lost also trumps it. True Blood was GREAT, but again, Lost trumps it. Hate to burst everyone’s Ausiello-adoring bubbles (mine included), but the reason he generally doesn’t include Lost in his picks is because he doesn’t watch the show anymore. End of story.
BFleet’s list is about perfect.
Bfleet’s list is on the money. Dexter and Sons of Anarchy both had stellar seasons. Dexter had its best season yet, and Sons of Anarchy had an impressive season despite only being in it’s second year.
and XSE Drake is right, I’m a big fan of True Blood but this season was so boring, not Emmy worthy at all. The moments of awesomeness were dispersed between three or four episodes of nothing.
Lost will probably be there, but it’s as more of a “lifetime achievement award” than for this season — which has no business at all on the list.
I agree with Mike. Season 6 of Lost wasn’t all that great. So many unnecessary characters were introduced just to kill them a little later: it could have been so much tighter than it was.
It depends on how you interpret the finale as to whether you believe LOST deserves a best drama series nod.
To me, the actors put a lot of effort into making much out of a thin plotline this last season, so for that I’d rather LOST win for best cast ensemble at the GGs.
FNL qall the way
Dexter
hasn’t lost seen enough love from the emmys?
what do y’all think of SOA? the thing about it, I think, is that it’s really good story telling.
You guys may love Lost but here’s something that Losties don’t seem to get….overall, it hasnt been that great a show esp compared to the first two seasons. The writing has been stretched out to fill the contract to 2010 with lots of useless and pointless filler. That’s not worthy of an Emmy nod when there are shows out there that have been consistently good with no filler or junk.
And before you jump on my case..I like Lost. I watched it from day one up until Sunday but, unlike most Losties, can see past my own bias to look at quality.
Uh. yup. House.

I agree! I saw this list in the magazine last night and couldn’t believe Lost wasn’t on your list. It is ridiculous.
This list is completely invalidated by the exclusion of Lost. I will probably boycott the Emmys if it isn’t nominated.,
god i am so tired of you idiots who equate “i cried” with “it must have been a good show”. You may have enjoyed lost, but there is no way the quality of story and acting comes CLOSE to the other show he listed (with exception of true blood. like lost, i may enjoy it, but it isn’t the best thing on tv).
It’s not because I cried, Jen. It’s because the last season of Lost inspired me in a way that no other television show has ever done. I found it very profoundly cool that Doc Jensen, in his final recap, mentioned that the show inspired him to be a better father, husband, etc, because I had said to my husband, the night we watched it, that it had inspired me in the same way. I would never talk random crap about a show that I neither watch, nor understand, and I think you should probably abide by the same philosophy.
Jen ROCKS… the only person on this damn string that know what they are talking about
Seriously, with the way Lost went out, it doesn’t only deserve a nom, it deserves the win.
Except given Lost’s very uneven sixth season, and it’s unbelievably disappointing ending, Lost doesn’t deserve a nomination for Best Drama.
The season still had some great acting, though…
Except for the huge number of people who loved the ending.
Just because a whole bunch of people like something, doesn’t mean it was good. Millions upon millions of people bought Creed albums and thought they were good…They weren’t.
Quantity does NOT equal quality.
so what vikki sixx – something is good or bad based on whether or not YOU like it?
yup. where’s lost? it was awesome this year as a stand alone season but even better when put in context of the whole series.
Where is LOST Ausiello.
If Lost wasn’t on there then I am NOT taking your list seriously.
You definitely missed LOST on your list.
Lost should get an emmy
Ha, I agree that Lost needs to be nominated and I can only imagine when ausiello was writing this he must have been thinking “well the first ten pages of comments are going to be filled with Lost fans calling for my head.”
I mean really, no LOST? The greatest television show of all time is being omitted in favor for a super-campy crap show about vampires and sex, a cliche football show, and Mad Men, that cynical show with no likable characters at all?! C’mon!
Oh but of course, LOST ended on an inspiring, emotional note and this is the era where a television show has to be stoic and cynical to be any good. I almost forgot…
Ha, ha Ausiello. That’s a pretty damn funny “dream ballot”. Wait, what the- WHAT THE F**K! YOU ACTUALLY THINK THIS IS A DREAM BALLOT! I’m sorry, I’m sorry. But seriously, how can make a dream ballot without the show that will win best drama?
Dexter definitely had a great season, but I disagree about Lost. I’m a big Lost fan and I do appreciate the direction they took with season 6, but overall the writing was less tight than previous years. And the abstract nature of the ending means that Lost has as much chance of winning an emmy as Mulholland Drive did at winning an Oscar.
did you really find it that abstract? I actually found it very meaningful, and WAY more concrete than Mulholland Falls. If, as many viewers suspected, that everything indeed “never really happened”, then I could understand the comparison, but because it was pretty well spelled out there at the end, as far as what the show’s six seasons meant and were depicting, I have to respectfully disagree.
Mulholland Falls was fantastic. And what’s wrong with abstract? Does everything in life end up black and white and presented to you in a neat little package tied with a pretty bow?
Season 6 has been a really bad…do you think it deserves to be nominated?
So glad LOST was first on the comment board. Truly groundbreaking television. this should be its year.
Agreed! I love ‘True Blood’, but ‘Lost’ should be on that list before it.
I agree as well. LOST is/was the BEST show on TV. EVER.
Love your name dude!
Totally agree. This was the last season of “Lost” and it was an excellent one, climaxing in a finale full of suspense, mystery, romance and emotion. While its complex themes and mind-boggling mysteries certainly kept me entranced, it was the wonderfully developed characters that made the show truly special. Oh but of course, LOST ended on an inspiring, emotional note and this is the era where a television show has to be stoic and cynical to be any good. I almost forgot…
Except this season of Lost was not that great.
Cannot believe you left off Lost and Nurse Jackie – both brilliant, “break the mold” shows. Glee is great but Emmy-worthy? And I don’t agree with The Good Wife – it’s a good show, but again, not exactly Emmy material or groundbreaking. I think it makes more sense to recognize the acting in TGW rather than the show itself.
No kidding. The best drama category should read as follows…
LOST
LOST
LOST
LOST
and did we mention LOST?
I agree with everything on your list, except for UMMMM… LOST
Was lost intentionally left off the list to provoke this very debate? Just wondering?
Supernatural is more like it. This show is amazing and has been overlooked by Emmy voters far too long. Critics love it and the fans are loyal. How about showing them some love instead of the same ol’ same ol’.
Glee? Seriously?
The first part was great but since it returned is going downhill.
And no Lost???
Agreed nanda
While there are definitely some duds, I actually think Glee is still going strong. The music is, as usual, indelible; the cast is, for the most part, charismatic and talented; and the script is full of catchy, memorable lines. I loved the Neil Patrick Harris episode.
Glee is a comedy with a bit of drama thrown in. I don’t believe it belongs in the best drama category.
Glee? Seriously?
The first part was great but since it returned is going downhill.
And no Lost???
Glee desrves the nomination based on the first 13, it deserves not to win based on the disorganized mess that is the back 9 episodes.
you’re a disorganized mess.
I agree. (with Beth, not quincy).
What are you talking? The back 9 have been just as brilliant. The relationships have been explored more, especially between Kurt and his dad. If you don’t enjoy it anymore, quit watching. The rest of us still like it.
I got hooked on Glee early, but I have to agree that it really isn’t all that brilliant, just catchy. The plots and acting are awful.
Agree with this %100!
I love Glee and think it very much desrves an Emmy Nomination. I just feel the back 9 is more about moments then continuity of the plot lines. The writing/Story telling just isn’t up to par to deserve the Emmy win, IMO.
TexasGlee, I completely agree with you in that the Kurt and his Dad relationship has been fantastic. But, even though I like the show, there are too many other comedies that deserve to win for sure (Personally, I liked Better Off Ted the most, but Modern Family deserves the win).
I think GLEE got too caught up in it’s celebrity, and started started trying to be too many shows for too many people. When the series looses it’s heart and emotional center, thinks start to fall apart. The previous 2 episodes have been hitting their stride a little more, so I believe there’s still hope for a superb finish to the season that has become a cultural phenom… However, this entire list is invalidated by the lack of LOST. Seriously? DEXTER should also be up there, came back after a sloppy and weak season to put out it’s best stuff yet.
Completely agree w/ Beth. I only watch Glee for the musical numbers now. I used to think it was much better overall..
I wouldn’t be so harsh on the back 9 for Glee. they may not be as strong but i’m still entertained.
Ausiello, I’m sure you’re ruing the LOST omission. you should in case you’re not. I think last seasson was stronger, though the performances were brilliant in the 6th, so if that’s you’re thinking for inclusion in acting and exclusion for show, i semi get it but it’s better than FNL, you’re fanlove aside. Dexter too. Dexter had an amazing-balls season. House I would agree had an amazing, ground breaking premiere and then just a good season. Not enough of Lisa Edelstein so her inclusion for acting and this list makes me wonder what you’re going for in terms of this season vs series/body of work.
to give you credit, thanks for not including Matthew Morrison for acting. He’s a one note who delivers all of his lines in the exact same shell of a person way and it irritates me/takes away from the show. I was worried when i saw his face on your dream ballot.
i hate to break it to most of you but Glee is not only going to get nominated for real, but there’s a good chance that Glee will stealing the Emmy from 30 Rock.
However, i do agree that the drama category NEEDS to include Lost. Will it win? Probably not, because they’re jerks, but it most definitely deserves a nomination.
One word: “Community”
Agree 100% about Glee. The writing is simply not up to par. Sorry guys. Replace Glee with The Office for surviving some huge changes (Sabre, the wedding, birth) and still remaining funny (though not as funny as in previous seasons)
The Office? Now there’s a show that’s not up to par (anymore).
I love Glee, but I have to agree that I don’t think they’re quite Emmy-worthy. Not yet. They have some adjusting to do before they get the Emmy in terms of tone, consistency, and storytelling.
I would put Party Down in the Comedy list, maybe substitute it for Glee. But I do agree that Chuck is SO deserving.
For drama, totally agree with FNL and True Blood – I don’t watch the other shows in the list, so I can’t comment, but I would love to see Justified in there too. And Parenthood is amazing too, but I’m sure it’ll be nominated in it’s 2nd season for sure, since this one was truncated.
Couldn’t agree more about how Party Down should be on the list or how Chuck is so deserving.
no kidding. I watched the first few eps of Glee…and now I can’t stand any of it except Jane Lynch.LOST needs to be there…
Agreed nanda
Consider Glee without the music. Is it really worthy of an Emmy? I couldn’t even make it past one episode. Jane Lynch is the only redeeming part of the show.
I totally agree with you, MC. Also, in the words of Joel McHale, “WRITE SOME ORIGINAL MATERIAL!” I really enjoyed the show at first, but now it’s at “guilty pleasure” status.
And I never skipped it for Lost. I really don’t have to mention this because so many other people already have, but what the heck, Ausiello? Your list is not valid without a certain 4-letter word show being listed for best drama. JAC…I mean, LOST!
omg. Thank You. Glee is not deserving of any emmy.
yes it is.
While there are definitely some duds, I actually think Glee is still going strong. The music is, as usual, indelible; the cast is, for the most part, charismatic and talented; and the script is full of catchy, memorable lines. I loved the Neil Patrick Harris episode.
the back 9 were way better then the first 13 though. way more consistent, with better production, songs and a little something called acting.
Glee is a comedy with a bit of drama thrown in. I don’t believe it belongs in the best drama category.
Swap out the Good Wife for Sons of Anarchy and your list is perfect
Swap out the Good Wife for Sons of Anarchy and your list is perfect
I agree about Sons of Anarchy ( I feel it should win) but switch it out with Damages.
I’m with swapping out The Good Wife for Sons. Damages, although it had some flaws, was still amazing this past season,
Good Wife should be on the list without question. SOA – might replace something else, but not The Good Wife which might even deserve the win.
how about SOA instead of True Blood? I can’t get through two episdoes of TB. SOA packs more into each episode than any other show. and I love the patient and labored development of Jax’s desire to change the club. this bikers hamlet has balls.
What about Lost and House?
Chuck needs to be recognised. Its one of the few shows i laugh at each week. Actually, the only one.
Chuck needs to be recognised. Its one of the few shows i laugh at each week. Actually, the only one.
I second that! GO CHUCK!!!!
I LOVE Chuck and would love it to win emmys, but I don’t think it ever will because it is to hard to categorize. It has too much dramatic action to be a pure comedy. We need a separate category for the special shows that can handle comedy, action, AND drama.
Yep, Chuck is a show that will never get recognized because it combines more than one genre in equal parts. Gilmore Girls had that problem too if I remember right, torn between drama and comedy, both of which it did well. Love your Comedy noms, fantastic to see critics admitting what a great show Cougar Town turned out to be!
Yes, CHUCK!!
I definitely Chuck should win something! Or at least get recognized in some category..
Lost should be number one on your list!
Lost should be number one on your list!
Lost and Big Bang Theory should both be in there.
Seriously??? No love for LOST or Parenthood???
Seriously??? No love for LOST or Parenthood???
I’d love to see Lauren Graham nominated for Parenthood, not just for her work on this show, but also for all 7 years of Gilmore Girl snubs.
Agreed.
OMG! that woman is amazing and Gilmore Girls is epic! i would like to see her as a nominee this year.
Modern Family or Parks & Rec need to win, they are both amazing. It’s strange that 30 Rock doesn’t look likely to be on the comedy ticket, but it just hasn’t been as funny this year!
Huh? Are you kidding me? After 3 wins in a row, 30 Rock will be nominated! And so will the Office. Sorr Ausiello, your dream will not be a reality!
Modern Family or Parks & Rec need to win, they are both amazing. It’s strange that 30 Rock doesn’t look likely to be on the comedy ticket, but it just hasn’t been as funny this year!
