Comcast and ESPN announced an agreement today to offer ESPN 3D to the cable company’s digital customers. Comcast is the first cabler to distribute the new sports network that will launch on June 11.  “ESPN was a pioneer in HD, and continues to move the industry forward with the first 3D sports network,” said Brian L. Roberts, chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation, in a statement.  “We delivered the first live national 3D sports event to consumers homes earlier this year with the Masters Tournament and believe that 3D sports will drive the adoption of this technology and continue to revolutionize how we deliver entertainment.”

ESPN 3D will air the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match featuring South Africa versus Mexico when the network bows June 11. The network will end up featuring up to 25 matches from the international soccer tourney.  Along with NBA games, other highlights include the X Games from July 28-Aug. 1, college football’s ACC Championship on Dec. 4, and college basketball’s Big East Tournament, March 8-12, 2011.

NBC orders new series from Jerry Bruckheimer

NBC announced today that it has picked up its fifth series for the 2010-11 season – a drama called Chase from executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI). The series that will star Kelli Giddish (Past Life), Cole Hauser (K-Ville), Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break), and Jesse Metcalfe (Desperate Housewives) is about a team of U.S. marshals who hunt down America’s most dangerous fugitives. “Chase has all the undeniable elements of a thrill ride that you would expect from a Jerry Bruckheimer action series,” said Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios, in a statement.  “Equally important, it also features a great cast.  Kelli Giddish is a breakout star as the lead.”

NBC already announced that it has picked up Undercovers, The Event, Love Bites, and Outsourced for fall. More pickups are expected in anticipation of NBC’s fall presentation to advertisers on May 17 in New York.

Chase was written by Jennifer Johnson (Cold Case).

'Big Bang' video exclusive: Jim Parsons on flashing back, romancing Blossom, and other fun stuff

jim-parsons_big-bang-theoryImage Credit: Robert Voets/CBSIn what is fast becoming one of my favorite annual traditions here at Entertainment Weekly, Jim Parsons dropped by our offices last week to shoot the poop on all things Big Bang Theory. In addition to previewing next week’s eventful flashback episode (exclusive clips included!), the Emmy shoo-in revealed the real story behind Sheldon’s season-ending “romance” with Blossom (a.k.a. Mayim Bialik), and opened up about the joys of working with a cast that is clean, sober, and so not insane. Bonus scoop: Look out for an answer to a recent Bang-themed asterisk quiz! Enjoy! Exclusive: I've seen the 'Gossip Girl' finale and it's [major spoiler alert]!

Categories: Gossip Girl, Scoop

gossip-girlImage Credit: Giovanni Rufino/The CWI guess it’s “really, really, good” isn’t much of a spoiler. But it’s accurate. The May 17 Gossip Girl sendoff features big payoffs, several OMG! twists, and a Georgina comeback. Enough, if you ask me, to more than make up for an uneven (but not nearly as bad as some people have said!) season. Most importantly, Chuck/Blair fans freaking out over a certain spoiler-laced European trailer that shows the couple nearing third base should simmer down and judge things after watching the entire hour — a sentiment echoed by exec producer Stephanie Savage. 'Saturday Night Live' with Betty White attracts big ratings

betty-white-snlImage Credit: NBCBetty White’s appearance on Saturday Night Live was truly golden: Last night’s edition posted its highest overnight ratings in 18 months.  The telecast featuring White and musical guest Jay-Z averaged an 8.8 rating/21 share among 56 local markets tracked by Nielsen. That’s a high for the series since Nov. 1, 2008, when Ben Affleck hosted and Republican Presidential nominee John McCain appeared alongside Tina Fey as Gov. Sarah Palin.

In 25 markets with local people meters, last night’s edition averaged a 5.1/20 share among adults 18-49 – another high since the Nov. 1 telecast.

Not surprisingly, last night’s SNL was No. 1 for the night, topping all primetime programs on all major networks. In homes, SNL doubled the No. 1 telecast in primetime, which was ABC’s coverage of the NBA Playoffs (a 4.4/8 in metered markets). Versus the same night last year, SNL was up 66 percent in metered-market households. Besides White, last night’s edition also featured appearances by SNL alums Rachel Dratch, Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Molly Shannon.

Final ratings, including viewer totals, for last night are due from Nielsen on Thursday.
