The network confirmed today that it has picked up the single-camera comedy Happy Endings for fall that stars Cuthbert as a bride who breaks up with her groom at the altar. It’s one of three laughers that earned orders today by ABC. The others are Mr. Sunshine, a Matthew Perry (Friends) starrer about the owner of a sports arena, and Better Together, a comedy with Joanna Garcia (Privileged) that focuses on two sisters in different stages of their romantic relationships.

More pickups for fall are expected soon. ABC already ordered No Ordinary Family, the high-concept drama starring Michael Chiklis (The Shield) as the patriarch of a family with super powers.

Breaking: NBC cancels 'Law & Order'?

Categories: Law & Order, Scoop

jack-mccoyImage Credit: Virginia Sherwood/NBCNow this is what I call a Law & Order twist: NBC is declining to comment on a Deadline report claiming the network has opted to not to renew the long-running procedural for what would have been a record-breaking 21st season. If true, it means Dick Wolf will have to settle for simply tying Gunsmoke‘s record as TV’s longest-running drama series. “It’s a fluid situation,” says a source close to the talks. “It’s not a done deal.” I’m told the L&O stalemate is not expected to have an impact on the likely renewal of Law & Order: SVU and imminent pickup of new spinoff Law & Order: Los Angeles. Meanwhile, don’t count on the mothership jumping to TNT. In a statement, the net — which has been home to L&O reruns for years — said  it “is not in ongoing discussions about picking up the series for first-run episodes.” Developing…

'24' exclusive: Cherry Jones talks about 'losing her marbles' as president

Categories: Television, TV Biz

24-president-8amImage Credit: FoxIn anticipation of the 24 finale, EW talked exclusively to the Emmy-winning Cherry Jones about President Allison Taylor’s trippy story arc this year (like how she’s overlooking the Russians’ involvement in the assassination of Omar Hassan and focusing on a doomed peace agreement instead). But spoiler alert, fans! Though the longtime stage actress doesn’t give away too much about the ending, she does tease a thing or two about where her character is headed. Read on after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Dexter,' House,' 'True Blood,' 'Glee,' 'Grey's,' and more!

Question: I can’t go another week without getting some Dexter season 5 scoopage! —Maria
Ausiello:
Your timing is impeccable, Maria. As luck would have it, I can’t go another week without giving you some Dexter season 5 scoopage. You’re never going to believe who ends up caring for Dexter’s three motherless children. Go ahead, hazard a guess. Dex’s in-laws, you say? Wrong! It’s Deb! New showrunner Chip Johannessen tells me that in the wake of Rita’s brutal slaying, Dex turns to his sister (played by Michael C. Hall’s real-life bride, Jennifer Carpenter) to help care for the kids. And if that’s not problematic enough, all five of them will move into Dex’s old (and rather teensy) apartment! “It’s partially funny and partially not,” says Johannessen. “Deb is not exactly the most maternal person. Nobody quite knows what they’re doing, so there’s a certain kind of struggle to cope.” (For more scoop on Dexter‘s fifth season — bowing in September — pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly.) Steven Spielberg may help Fox make big splash at upfronts

Categories: Deals, Television, TV Biz

Steven-Spielberg_240.jpg Image Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Steven Spielberg may help Fox make a big splash on Monday when the network announces its fall 2010 lineup in New York.  Sources say Spielberg  – who is one several high-profile producers behind the network’s big-budget drama Terra Nova -  taped a special introductory message that will be presented to advertisers if the network orders the show to series. The high-concept project is about a family 100 years in the future that travels back to the prehistoric era and is executive produced by Brannon Braga, ex-Fox Chairman Peter Chernin, agent-turned-producer Aaron Kaplan, and Craig Silverstein, among others. Chernin also is expected to appear in the video message.

Sources told EW that a 13-episode commitment for the show is a foregone conclusion and an offer to play one of the leads has already gone out to Kyle Chandler  (the Friday Night Lights star ended up passing). The show is expected to shoot in Hawaii later this summer.

This would be the second time in less than two weeks that Spielberg’s name and/or likeness was used to promote a project that has yet to start production. Over the weekend, the trailer for Super 8 – a movie Spielberg is executive producing and J.J. Abrams is directing – debuted in movie theaters before Iron Man 2. Production on Super 8 begins this fall for a summer 2011 release.

Meanwhile, EW obtained the script for Terra Nova, which begins in 2149 A.D. The scene: a large group of settlers are preparing to leave the apocalyptic world they live in to time travel back millions of years via a massive, high-tech contraption. Their goal is to see trees, enjoy a blue sky, eat real food – basically, to start over in this so-called Eden. But what they find is unlike anything they were expecting.

Breaking: ABC picks up 'No Ordinary Family' starring Michael Chiklis

Categories: Television, TV Biz, TV Pilots

michael-chiklisImage Credit: Jerritt Clark/WireImage.comWe still don’t know the status of Heroes on NBC, but at least ABC will bring a superhero drama to prime time next fall. The network announced today that it has picked up No Ordinary Family starring Michael Chiklis (The Shield) -  a drama about a family with amazing new abilities. Besides Chiklis, the series also stars Julie Benz (Dexter) and Tate Donovan (Damages). It’s executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Jon Feldman, Morgan Wandell and David Semel.

Earlier today, Heroes co-star Greg Grunberg posted an update on his Twitter account saying “ haven’t heard anything official re: Heroes for next season. Hope it gets picked up.”

All the broadcast nets will announce their fall lineups next week in New York.

Exclusive: NBC unveils Emmy submissions!

emmy-storyImage Credit: Byron Cohen/NBC; Chris Haston/NBC; Larry Watson/FoxEvery year prior to Emmy nominations, the suits at the major TV studios stuff voters’ mailboxes with tons of DVDs featuring what they feel are their shows’ best episodes of the season. I just got a hold of Universal Media Studios’ fancy Emmy kit, and here are the episodes they chose to single out from this season’s Office, 30 Rock, Parenthood, etc. Note: These may differ from the formal submissions that are used in determining the winners. Also, keep in mind that Emmy-worthy episodes that aired after the mailer deadline could not be included, which is presumably why SNL didn’t include the Betty White episode.

Fall 2010: Time for the networks to start juggling timeslots

Categories: Television, TV Biz

insiderImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; PRN/PR Photos; Sophia Quach/PR Photos; Bob Charlotte /PR PhotosThis is the time of year when execs at the broadcast networks hunker down to figure out their own fall schedules — and just as importantly, suss out their competitors. As usual, they won’t reveal their plans until they make them public next week in New York at the upfronts, but there’s already plenty of speculation about what changes will come in September:

  • CBS could move the once-dominant CSI out of its Thursday berth to make way for The Mentalist (the network tested a switcheroo earlier this season) or a new drama like Hawaii Five-O. A tropical-based series as a lead-out for Survivor? Not a bad play.
  • Fox has a big hole to fill on Mondays now that 24 is history: Will it pair House with new police drama Ridealong (from The Shield’s Shawn Ryan) starring Brotherhood’s Jason Clarke, or give it to one of its ailing freshman series like Human Target or Lie to Me? (Update: Lie and Target are expected to earn second season pickups.)
  • NBC still hasn’t decided whether to renew struggling dramas Heroes, Law & Order, and Mercy, but promising new shows from J.J. Abrams (a Hart to Hart-type drama called Undercovers) and Jerry Bruckheimer (a crime tale dubbed Chase) should help fill the 10 p.m. slots. The Peacock is also expected to launch a new comedy block on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, since it has developed lots of new sitcoms, including Outsourced, about an India call center, and a semi-autobiographical sitcom starring Mad About You’s Paul Reiser.
  • At ABC, Thursdays at 8 p.m. is probably up for grabs (does anyone really think FlashForward will get a second-season pickup?), while such middling performers as Brothers & Sisters and Private Practice could be moved to make way for new dramas like No Ordinary Family starring Michael Chiklis.
  • As for The CW, Melrose Place is out and the low-rated dramas Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill aren’t exactly shoo-ins for renewal, so the No. 5 net will have holes to patch up on Mondays and Tuesdays come fall. Fortunately, The CW has a new version of the La Femme Nikita franchise in the works, ready to kick some butt.

Armchair Casting Director: Who should play Sue Sylvester's parents?

jane-lynchImage Credit: Michael Yarish/FoxThe mind boggles when it tries to imagine what kind of people could have brought Glee’s Sue Sylvester into the world. Or maybe that’s just my mind. At any rate, we may not have to imagine for much longer, as rumor has it the Fox hit is considering bringing on her Nazi-hunting mom and dad next season. Who should play them? Dare I suggest… READ FULL STORY »
