Image Credit: Adam Taylor/FoxWanna good scare? Imagine the end of House. And with Hugh Laurie’s contract up next season, it could happen. “I have no idea” how much longer the show will run, he tells me. “I only hope we’ll know when the time is right [to close up shop]. When people blunder on for five years after [they should have called it quits]… it gets taken out of your hands. Someone will say, ‘That’s it.’
“But for now,” he adds, “I’m immensely proud of the things we did this season.”
As well he should be. The crushing finale alone stands as the actor’s finest work to date (and that’s saying something!). So, given the quality of material he’s still getting to play, it shouldn’t come as a shock that he says “I am open” to continuing beyond season 7.
Laurie maintains that the idea of hanging up House’s stethoscope for good isn’t something he’s had time to dwell on — not yet, anyway. “This sounds like I’m trying to avoid [the question]. I’m not,” he insists. “I have the brain of a hamster and I can’t think beyond 5 o’clock this afternoon. I really am that stupid.
“I can only say,” he continues, “I think we’ll have a sense next year at some point” about whether to keep going.
Now we know what he thinks. What do you think? Is House nearing the end of the line creatively? Or do you agree with me that it’s just hitting high after high? Sound off below!

This show needs to go off the air-it’s well past it’s prime and incredibly stale.
Boo
Not so fast Ajay, Fringe isn’t one of Fox’s heavy hitters by any stretch of wishful thinking. If you’re a fan of the show, do it a favor and don’t try to make it something it’s not.
I love the program House and would hope it continues well past season 8! No reason it can’t. Hell, it just got better with a whole new angle of plot directions thanks to the killer finale. Lets see House become a daddy!!! That ought to be a riot!
Not so fast Mikos,
While Fringe may not be the biggest rating draw, it has a solid consistency. That’s what FOX needs. Consistency. Oh, and if YOU’RE NOT a fan of the show, do the fans a favor and stop putting it down.
yup thats what fox wants, a show that CONSISTANTLY gets 5Million viewers and the low 2′s in the demo
Yeah, Mikos, you subbed Fringe in for Glee on your list of “heavy hitters”.
House will blunder on — if they can convince Laurie to stay — for the simple reason that without 24 and with AI in deep trouble without Simon, Fox simply can’t lose the viewers. I have to say, being a huge Jennifer Morrison fan, I stopped watching when she left and apparently missed some good shows this spring.
The problem with what’s happened in the season finale – ie Huddy becoming a relationship for next season – is that the viewers don’t have any alternative. In other hit shows – Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Friends, etc. the supporting characters were always important enough that if you didn’t like the “main” couple on the show you didn’t have to watch them, you could focus on other characters – like the Mer-Der storyline. Now they’ve gotten together they’re not such a big feature anymore, but that’s okay. The problem with “Huddy” is that “House” will always HAVE to be the main character – it’s all in the name. So if you don’t like Huddy, you’re going to be forced to watch it, because the show is essentially all about House. And I think the creators have grossly overestimated the number of people who actually want to watch this romance.
Then watch something you can relate to, like “Biggest Loser.”
:p- If I were being nice, I’d say check the DVR numbers, the Hulu views, and so on and then come back and talk about ratings. If I’m not being nice then I’d that’s what happens when you schedule a thought provoking genre show against an easy to follow show about pretty doctors with problems. You decide which one you want.
Sorry Peter, meant that comment to go to :p
I think it could go on, definitely, but I’d rather the show go out at the top, creatively, and leave fans clamouring for more, than the show continuing for a few more years and somehow losing its charm and creativity.
Agreed. They can keep going, for sure, it’s still a very successful show in terms of rating but, as you, I want to see ‘House’ going out on a high note.
you suck if you hatye this show cont read the comments
You suck if you think that everyone that doesn’t share your opinion sucks.
I think you’re right. I was a huge fan of the show until this season. The changes are too much, and it’s not good for the show. The ratings are showing it already. I hope for Hugh that he know when to end, I wouldn’t want him to ruin the rest of his career for House.
This season was ok….and i didn’t think this season finale was anywhere near the best work house has done….i thought it was ok…
I know everyone keeps saying how the show has gone downhill and so have the ratings… But ‘House’ is still the most watched show in the world. It makes Fox and NBC Universal a ton of money, so I’m sure it will be on the air until it comes to its natural conclusion. I still enjoy House, but the medical mysteries this season were pretty blah. The character development was really all that kept me coming back each episode. I hope next season is more consistent and is as good as Season 6′s premiere and finale were.
Then stop watching it but really, don’t ruin it for everyone else!
John you need to go off the air, stat!
I’m really going to miss 24. If House goes too it will be too sad. I think House has at least a season left – if only to explore the relationship between House and Cuddy that just got re-ignited at the end of last season!
Oh, darn! Finally, finally Huddy is history because LE is gone. So those of us who were devoted fans from the very first episode can come back and watch the final season. Huddy was never a good idea, esp. considering the role Cuddy had in maiming House. Plus, the Cuddy character was always too old to be dressing like a tart. Good riddance!
House is a drama, taking his charater up and down is how they do it. I look forward to watching house every week! For someone like myself, who has never watched television ( a gamer ) I do make the time for this one series. Way to go, Hugh Laurie, I’m Addicted to House! Hope to see more of this wonderful show in the future.
Agreed
I hope that there are going to be a few more seasons of house its a fantastic show my favourite keep it going pleas
I hope it stays on – it just keeps getting better. It makes my Monday’s !
I agree, but I understand that he was away from his family for years with a trans-atlantic separation and then they moved to L.A. (but don’t like it, who does?). They want to go home and have him do stuff for the BBC.
“They want to go home and have him do stuff for the BBC.”
Yes please. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen him do the stuff he does bast at home.
““I have the brain of a hamster and I can’t think beyond 5 o’clock this afternoon. I really am that stupid.”
Yeah, right. Where was it he met Stephen Fry? One of the top universities on the planet. That’s all. He’s wasted in something as formulaic as this show.
His family don’t move to the United State. They live still in London. I wish he would go back and make more good drama shows for BBC and sometime comedy or best would be drama with funny stuffs in it.
I hope it stays on – it just keeps getting better. It makes my Monday’s !
nnnnoooooooo ….. i hate for it to end

Apart from the finale, I thought S6 was pretty dire. If S7 was to be the final season then I’d actually be far more eager to watch than I am now, because I’d be hoping for the quality to go up to go out on a high.
7 seasons is still a pretty long run.
To be honest, House has never really recovered after Foreman, Chase, and Cameron exited after season 3. I would agree that the show has really hit a dry spell. Although seasons 4, 5, and 6 all had their high moments, they still cannot even come close to the first three years of the show. I couldn’t honestly see House going past season 8, if that.
Alex, I agree. Seasons 1-3 were perfect and House has been trying to regain the magic ever since. I still believe the show can go out on a high note (and have an amazing run overall), but 8 seasons should be the max.
In season 7 they can get Huddy out of their system and then tackle the serious issues in season 8; like will House finally amputate his leg.
Cheery, I USED to think they were trying to regain the magic of seasons 1-3, but then I realized that they are too busy writing OOC scripts and retconning the character’s histories. If they REALLY wanted to regain that magic, they would try a hell of a lot harder.
Right now=EPIC FAIL.

Definitely agree, Keir. With the exception of the premiere, the finale, and some select scenes in between, this season was incredibly boring. They need to find a way to mix it up – less hospital, more House – like in all of its amazing episodes (ie – Three Stories, House’s Head/Wilson’s Heart).
I’m looking forward to the evolution of the House/Cuddy relationship – hopefully that will pull the show out of the doldrums it’s currently in.
Not gonna happen, Michelle. One thing we DO NOT NEED is a prime time soap opera, and that’s exactly what we are in for with the whole House/Cuddy relationship.
Sadly, the writers on this show not only can’t write a decent female character without screwing it up, they REALLY can’t write a relationship.
I agree Michelle. This season has been pretty weak and boring. I´m looking forward to the development of the House-Cuddy relationship because I think it will bring some great storylines to the show.
What storylines House changing diapears and do this what cuddy want. Awful stuff
I agree with D. The writers do seem to have major issues writing a believable and consistent female character on the show, and they have an even bigger problem writing relationships. Cuddy has turned into a different person these last two seasons (a much less strong and interesting person), and a relationship with House can only end two ways: they drive each other crazy and eventually break up, making all the Huddies mad, or they are happy together and turn the show into a soap opera, making everyone else mad. You choose.
I also thought this season was disappointing. (Unlike Kier, I didn’t even like the finale.) The show has been in decline since the end of season four and the drop in quality has been especially noticeable this last season. House could have ended on a high note with House`s Head/Wilson’s Heart or even with last season’s finale. It’s too late for House to go out in a blaze of glory now.
I disagree totally with Michelle’s prescription that more Huddy is the cure for what ails House. A concentration on turgid, lifeless, soap-opera romance is what is killing House! Huddy is the disease not the cure!
Oops, meant to type end of season 3.
The acting is still top notch, but the stories have plateaued. So it would be wise to let it go off the air after next season.

With the season 6 final they have got written the end of the show. It`s over. HL amazing acting won`t help anymore. But I wish him the very, very best.
Ha. Drastic much?
No, actually, that’s how a LOT of us feel.
You want drastic? Read on. There are people whose lives are actually OVER (really, no joke!) when House ends.
What I meant is that the show is NOT over, objectively talking, they show keeps getting really good ratings (yeah, yeah, worse than earlier seasons) and whether people are happy or not where the show is going creatively, ‘House’ is one of the scripted shows that does better in terms of rating right now. So, saying that the SHOW IS OVERRRRR is being drastic because it’s just based on personal feelings and not on actual facts.
Yes, yes i think you right. It´s over for me. This season made me in many ways angry. (No i don`t mean because of the exit cameron, i think they should let the old team go for good after season3). It makes me angry the show becomes incredible dull in between. The plotlines were sometimes so what ridiculus, forced and anvillious. It doesn`t felt naturally to me. I had a lot more expectation with the direction of the show after his breakdown last season. But we got finish the season that love is the cure for all his problems is just ridiculus. And i don`t like the fact that they never explored cuddys part during his infarction. They obviously forgot that she was the doctor who cut out his muscle what gave him the pain. The same counts that they forget that stacey existed. This season it looks like Cuddy was allways the love his life. I have a lot of more points but i don`t wanna bore you. This show becomes inconsistent and cliched.

It’s time, but it may be that I think Huddy is a huge mistake.
