Exclusive: Tate Donovan and Christina Chang exit 'No Ordinary Family'

no-ordinary-familyImage Credit: Craig Sjodin/ABCABC’s superhero-themed series No Ordinary Family is undergoing some routine post-pilot retooling.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Family regulars Tate Donovan (Damages) and Christina Chang (CSI: Miami) are leaving the Greg Berlanti-produced drama.

“It was strictly a story-line-related decision,” maintains a Family source, adding that producers hope to bring both actors back on a guest-star basis, their schedules permitting.

Chang played a cop who worked alongside Michael Chiklis’ character, while Donovan — who was barely seen in the first episode — played a mysterious pilot.

Donovan in is the pilot for a split second. I think they had a scene with him at the end, but it was cut on the version ABC sent out for screener review. So unless you’re paying attention, u don’t even see him in pilot.

Chtristina had a nice scene or 2 with Michael, but it was hardly integral to plot. In fact, they don’t even need to cut that out of pilot. She jjust plays a cop he works with.

As long as they keep Autumn Reeser, it’s all good. I wouldn’t mind them hiring Charisma Carpentar either…

    • Sam

AGREED. I’ve been dying to see Taylor… I mean Autumn on my TV screen again.

      • Ava

Wait, Autumn Reeser is in this show?

        SOLD.

This is disappointing. Tate Donovan is a fine actor and brought such a strong dynamic with his character Tom Shayes along with Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) and Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne)for “Damages”.
I sure hope he doesn’t start down the path as a struggling actor because he doesn’t deserve that.

Who?? Why not talk about people we have actually seen or heard of.

    • lefty

um, I thought everyone had heard of Jimmy Cooper..

      • wooster182

Unfortunately. *shudder* I hate Jimmy Cooper.

Tate Donovan is good in everything he’s been in.

yep i just need my autumn reeser. but of course, i don’t want to lose julie benz, chiklis, or even kay panabaker.
as for this, i’m only sad about tate donovan. great actor.

  • Cameron

Trouble already. This does not bode well for the show.

  • Wil

Keep Tate Donovan XD He’s great! RIP Tom…

This show will tank anyway. Probably better that they move on to other prospects.

    • woot woot

last i looked, they were not even the stars of the show and excuse me, but no show wth Chicklis is gonna tank.

      • Kerry

        The Commish?

      • jennrae

The Commish didn’t tank. It was on for five seasons.

i’ve seen the pilot. if i didnt know Tate was in it, i wouldnt have. blink and you missed him. every show changes something from pilot to series. i hate the way everyone loves claiming doom on the net these days. Berlanti’s Brothers and Sisters recast 2 major roles (MAJOR – as in roles where you see the people on screen, unlike Tate’s role in this) and they are going into season 5. Calm down everyone

  • marc

    Joe,

why will the show tank have u seen it?

oh know tate donovan and christina chang arent gonna be in it. teh average american won’t be tuning in now. oh yeah, the avg american don’t know who they are

Christina Chang needs to be on a drama. She was fantastic on Private Practice this season (they should have made her a cast member).

This show is likely to turn out really well, as it has people in charge that have a pedigree in this genre, and are good at what they do. This should be the one that breaks the mold and succeeds where others fail, and should NOT be discounted due to a lack of faith in this type of show. Show should be good at not going too far and keeping it in the realm of believability (or suspension of disbelief, however you like to phrase it).
