Katherine Heigl submits herself as supporting actor in Emmy race

katherine-heiglImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosThough she sat out more than half of the season of Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has submitted herself in the supporting actress category for this year’s Emmy race, her representative confirms. There is no set amount of episodes that an actor must appear in to be eligible for either the supporting or lead actor categories.

Heigl only appeared in a handful of episodes this year before her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, was last seen around Seattle Grace in January. Heigl was due back on the set of the ABC drama March 1 but she never showed up. Heigl told EW that “rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue.” ABC Studios said it was mutually agreed upon that Heigl would end her run this season.

Nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmys will be announced July 8. As for the rest of the Grey’s stars, Ellen Pompeo submitted herself as lead actress, while the other ensemble members — including Patrick Dempsey — will duke it out in the supporting categories. To vie for the best drama prize, Grey’s submitted the two-hour finale, as well as the episodes “The Time Warp,” “Suicide is Painless,” “I Saw What I Saw,” and “Give Peace a Chance” for consideration.

NBC will air the Emmys on Aug. 29.

Why is this news? Isn’t she doing the “right” thing by submitting herself because last time she didn’t she got a crap storm of epic proportions. So is it damned if she does, damn if she doesn’t?

    • tarc

Precisely. Heigl is awesome, and the various haters out there are inexplicable and, well, obviously jealous.

      • UGH

        She’s a c**t.

      • Art

Well then, let me explain. I like Katherine Heigl: the actress. Izzie was my favorite character on Grey’s in the beginning, I was psyched that she was doing Knocked Up, happy that she was the breakout star of the show. I don’t like Katherine Heigl: the star. She shats on every opportunity, after cashing the paychecks and getting the visibility. I don’t find it “outspoken” that she slammed Knocked Up after it launched her film career. I don’t find it “refreshing” that she slammed the writers of Grey’s when she did not submit herself for an Emmy. Even not liking her, I liked her performance in 27 Dresses when it was on cable last night. She’s a charming actress. She’s just comes across as a charmless person.

      • Cris

Nope. Sorry Art. Logical reasons aside, you MUST simply be a hater. Isn’t that how it goes on message boards?

      • Stkittsperky

        Very classy.

      • Rufus Leaking

Damn I’d love to tap that.

      • RCB

You can “tap” all you want!

      • KC

I guarantee you she just lays there and looks at her watch.

      • Andrea

I completely agree with Art’s comments. She comes across as not a very likeable individual.

      • RaXXX

Katherine Heigl , to me appears as an honest person and a remarkably awesome actress! If she wants to speak her mind that’s her right! Go For Emmy, KAT!

    • Sharlin

So true. Let her submit. She has every right.

      • Carol

Exactly she is only doing the right thing and submitting to avoid a crap storm I imagine. I am sure she has no expectations about winning.

      • Emma

Love her. Love her acting. Love the new hair style.

      • Stkittsperky

My “classy”comment was intended for UGH, who should know better than to post such trash talk. You can dislike or disagree with a performer without being a foul-mouthed coward, hiding behind a fake name.

    • nikkido

She didn’t submit before as a publicity stunt. She got a crap storm due to her outrageous comments about why she did not submit.
She released that she was submitting as yes, wait for it, another publicity stunt for her new movie.
      Nothing sincere either time.

      • ron

She didn’t submit and was asked why. she didn’t volunteer the info. She said she didn’t have the writting, didn’t have the material. she was right. this season she had the death of George and her cancer drama so she did have material to submit, and did.

    • Kylie

For some reason the media loves to hate her. A few years ago she didn’t submit herself because her highlight of that season was operating on a deer and everyone was appauled. Now, she’s submitting herself and she’s being hated on cause she wasn’t in enough episodes. Considering the amazing performances she gave last season I’d say she’s fully justified in submitting herself even if she wasn’t in much of this season.

      • alex

ahem…what show were YOU watching?! it has nothing to do with how many eps she was in-Judi Dench got an Oscar for the shortest performance. its quality not quantity and quite frankly, Heigl was less than good in the eps she was featured in.

      • Rois, Ireland

@ Kylie At the time I don’t think the problem was that she didn’t submit herself but the fact that she trashed the Grey’s writers and used the Emmy’s for her own to publicly talk sh-t about them

      • Brett

Heigl could act 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for the rest of her lifetime and not equal the five minutes for which Dame Judi Dench won her Oscar.

    • SCBR

Um, didnt she pull her name from the running b/c she didnt “feel like” the “writers” gave her the material worthy of an emmy? What is this “she didnt submit herself and got a crap storm”???

      • Richard

Alex – what show are you watching. Fact Grey’s Anatomy sucked this season. Big time. The only redeeming feature was the finale. Ratings halved throughout the year. Heigl was stellar in the episodes she was in – the scene when the chief fired her was better than anything Sandra Oh and Ellen Pomepo (both trying hard for the title of worlds worst at crying on screen) did all year. Also the Emmy’s cover the end of Season 5 too – where Heigl also had some excellent episodes. Do I expect her to win? No. Do I expect Grey’s to win anything. No.

      • hot momma

        yaeh what

    • Jonathan F.

I am also puzzled as to why it is news that an actor has submitted themself into an acting race…

  • Anna

The only person worthy of an Emmy in that cast is Chandra Wilson.

The rest of them play soap opera.

    • Helena

Soap acting is just as good as nighttime televison and film acting, so STFU betch

      • LadyJNewYork

Can’t you express yourself without the name calling….gheez…grow up!

    • zoe

      100% AGREE!

      • Vince from NYC

100% Disagree.. Well maybe its the same if you watch crap shows on the CW.

    • Liz

SO untrue! Chandra, Sandra Oh, and Ellen Pomepo (Gosh, re-watch the finale, Ellen was so amazing! I hope she wins!) are all really great.

      • Becca

Totally agree! They are three of the best actresses on t.v. right now and are all really under appreciated!

    • Karen

      Sandra Oh is amazing too!

    • jared4ever

I can’t stand Chandra Wilson, she’s my least favourite actor on the show. I mean Over-actor.

    • sara

      Anna – I agree 110%

    • sascha

It’s about time she gets an emmy. Also, I don’t really like Sandra Oh’s character, but she was awesome this season.

  • Kevin

lol I thought it was news because she was submitting herself in Supporting Actor instead of Actress! I thought we had another Heigl scandal on our hands.

    • HAHA

Good one Kev. Nowadays they’re all called actors.

      • LuLu

! I needed that one :) And I don’t get why so many ppl hated the show this season. There were great stand alone eps and that finale was amazing. It set up great new cast members in Jackson, April and Teddy. Can’t wait for it to be back. Who needs Heigl?

  • graeme

Sandra Oh deserves the win this season…and Ellen Pompeo should submit the finale. She was amazing. But sadly, it was also the only “tape” she has the year.

    • Liz

That’s true. They don’t give Ellen enough material… it’s like everybody is the lead except her! She is THE Grey… but the writers don’t care.

      • Angela

I think you forget this year she was on maternity leave and downplayed because she was pregnant. It also allowed them to explore other characters because while the title does carry her character’s name, there is tons of talent on that show.

      • hannah

It wasn’t the writers-they obviously wanted her to be in every ep, and she did it even though she had a new baby, but she limited her scenes. Which is why she really wasn’t the lead actress this year-Sandra Oh probably was, if we have to name one.

  • Ryan

    what an unlikable loser.

  • BJohnson

Sandra Oh as Cristina hands down from the show. Her needing Owen to cry on his shoulder when she was missing her dad. What about the finale, still working on Derrick and her hearing Owen was there and that whole scene.
I’m really trying to remember Izzie’s scenes that would be worth an Emmy look and since she’s been gone, the best thing it did was show that Alex still missed her when he thought he was dying and called out for her.

    • ron

try the season finale of last season, the season premier of this season…

  • Andy

Well if she didn’t submit her name you would have given her crap for it. What is the poor woman supposed to do. Everything she does or says is twisted or blown completely out of proportion. Poor girl can’t win.

    • tarc

Indeed. It’s the result of the naysayers being completely irrational.

    • Sarah

When she took her name out of consideration, she blamed the writers and made a big deal about it. That’s why people gave her crap. If she didn’t think she had Emmy worthy material, she shouldn’t have submitted her name in the first place (and done it quietly).

      • Kristine

I don’t think she meant to blame the writers in any negative way. It was an ENSEMBLE show. Sometimes some characters are going to spend time in the background. It’s just the way it is. It’s not necessarily a shot at the writers.

      • Felix

        To Kristine:

“I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention” –Katherine Heigl

This was all during a very public contract negotiation.

      • Kristine

To Felix: Yes, but just because she wasn’t given an Emmy-worthy story that season doesn’t necessarily mean that the writing was poor. She WAS in the background a lot that season. What? Just being there warrants an Emmy nomination?

      • ron

She didn’t make a big deal about it, the press did.

  • Karyn

Ok this was posted on the LA times Envelope site about a month or more a go..not even news. I actually think Heigl’s scene with the chief when he fires her is the best thing this Season up to the finale.

  • Marten

I don’t see how this is news. She WAS a supporting actress on Grey’s Anatomy. Why can’t she submit herself?

  • Laura

I think people are getting a little irrationally defensive of Heigl here. The article doesn’t say she shouldn’t have submitted herself, just that she did.
I just assumed it was “news” and being reported on because of the whole sh*t storm that occurred last year when she didn’t submit herself.

    • Sharlin

It was the year before that she didn’t submit. She submitted last year for all the dead denny stuff.

      • Laura

My mistake, it gets difficult to keep track of these things! Or maybe I just tried to block dead Denny out of my mind…

    • sascha

You’re right. Maybe she might not get nominated this year.

  • VCI

This is why I can’t stand her. She insulted her writing staff by saying they didn’t give her emmy worthy stuff and then after not even wanting to be in the 6th season and finally getting written off you’re going to submit yourself after appear in what 3 episodes. KAtherine Heigl is a glory hog and has horrible publicity skills. ( Yes I know many things she says get taken out of context.) But all her misquoted text make her sound like a spoiled brat who insults the things that made her famous in the first place.

    • Richard

Whatever. She was in more than 3 episodes as well. About 8 or so in total..so at least 1/3 of the season. That means she is right to submit. If she didn’t people like you would be giving her crap. You hate her we get it.

      • VCI

I wouldn’t have been mad at her if she didn’t sumbit, Once you’ve been complaining to leave a show for two years you lose your right to want an award for it.

      • Richard

She said she wanted to leave ONCE until she did. Find a single quote – you won’t be able to. Yes she withdrew from the Emmys and was too honest for her own good (the writing did suck – she was right) – that is the only negative thing. I don’t subscribe to the 17 hour thing – talk about blown out of proportion. Not once did she ever say she was unhappy on the show. Not once.

  • luck

    god i hate her

  • Marie

Well, she is criticized if she doesn’t submit, then she gets criticized if she does? Leave her alone. And as a longtime soap watcher, I can tell you those soap vets are better actors than 90% of the preimetime ones. In fact, some soap actors who got fired for lack of talent are now on primetime.

    • DGH

At least the writing staff should feel happy that their writing was up to Katherine’s standards this year.

      • Patty

LOL! I was thinking the same thing.

      • ron

        not her standards, Emmy standards.

  • Lostie47

Hope she doesn’t get nominated …

    • JACK HART

if it wasnt 4 grey .. no one would know who she was .. very selfish & arrogant B**CH.

      • ron

Uhm… Grey’s is not her first staring roll. She stared in Roswell for 3 seasons, a show which still has a huge cult following.

  • Dustin

she should submit the episode she got fired in. that last scene was amazing!
