'Kate Plus 8' specials way up in viewers

kate-plus-8Image Credit: TLCThe premiere of the first of two Kate Plus 8 specials was a boon to TLC on Sunday: The episode titled “6th Birthday Surprise” averaged 3.4 million viewers while “Inside Kate’s Worlds” attracted 3 million. Both episodes not only posted triple-digit gains over TLC’s second quarter averages in the time period but earned double-digit ratings and delivery gains over the November 2009 airings of Jon and Kate Plus 8.

The Kate Plus 8 specials — which focus on the divorced mom’s complicated home life — are different from Twist of Kate, a new TLC series debuting this fall in which the mother of eight will travel the country to meet families with challenges at work or at home and attempt to “walk a mile in their shoes.” It’s unclear how many specials TLC will produce, but the next one airs July 11.

Who are these people and why do they keep tuning in to watch this horrible woman?

    • LOL

People love a train wreck, I suppose. What a shame that anyone would watch this garbage.

    • Quirky

I’ve always assumed it’s women that have been through their own bitter break-ups that see Kate as a sort of hero. Someone who’s complaining they can relate too. Considering the population of the US is 300+ million and the divorce rate is 50%, that’s a lot of potential fans for her.

    • Sally in Chicago

3.4 Mill is not a lot of households, but for TLC I guess it’s a hit.
Does anybody know how much she gets per episode? I believe those reality shows pay $10,000 an episode. Those kids have a rich trust fund.

      • Pete

$10,000? Are you on crack? Reality shows are super cheap to produce and the “stars” aren’t paid that much unless the reality star is an established entertainment professional. That’s definitely not Kate!! There’s no way her kids have a trust fund.

      • @Pete

She was paid $500,000 just for her “dancing” on DWTS, and while the reasoning behind her star power may be questionable, it is real. They are all being compensated for the show, and if those kids don’t have trust funds, something is very wrong.

      • Marisa

I heard how little the “Housewives” got their first year ($3,000, but now more,) so my memory may be very wrong but I thought it was $75,000. It may be correct, and it was when useless Jon was there, ten people, $7,500 rsch?

      • dude

I believe its more like 75,000 a episode. I heard it on the E channel.

      • dessertgirl

When Jon pulled the plug on the show and there began an investigation of the children needing work permits, the KIDS WERE PAID NOTHING. At that time, Kate ran to the bank and moved about $100,000 into accounts for all 8 kids — that’s a little over $12,000 each for FIVE YEARS LABOR.

The courts determined that for the future, the 8 would split 15% of the show proceeds and Kate got 85%. So the kids who are 8/9 of the cast got 15% and Kate who was 1/9 of the cast got 85%. Does anyone else find this UNFAIR?

The kids should have received a huge cut from the show from Day ONE! The proceeds from the show have gone to giving Kate an elevated lifestyle that she could never earn on her own. The kids are supporting Kate and it should be the parents who support their kids.

      • Tess

Five years labor? The kids weren’t doing labor, they were being kids. Get real. It’s not like they were working and not being paid!

      • cindy

It was in a magazine once about how much they get paid per episode(back when it was Jon & Kate plus 8) and they mentioned they get between $50,000-$75,000 PER show! This of course, has to do with the viewers watching more, etc.

    • Mirdeb

I agree, why are people watching this woman.

      • Tess

Five years labor? The kids weren’t doing labor, they were being kids. Get real. It’s not like they were working and not being paid!

    • Nielsen Sucks

1 nielsen box is equivalent to 5,000 viewers.
You must watch a fair amount of tv to get the box.
Nielsen company pays you to use the box.
CONCLUSION: 680 people who are desperate for money with little to no social life watched the show and not the 3.4 average Americans that they claim

      • Tim

I don’t know if you’re correct . I was offered a Nielsen box (I couldn’t take it because I was moving out). But you didn’t have to watch a large amount of TV or anything. They just knocked on the door and offered it.

      • Tim

Also I wasn’t poor or desperate for money. And I would have taken it so that I could have a say about the shows I like.
Though I still think Nielsen is a weird system.

      • anna

Yeah, they just knocked on my door and I got it. You really don’t recieve that much money for it either. I didn’t watch it, but we are obviously all a little interested in it if we read this article, lol, including you Nielsen sucks!

    • John

If you hate her stop reading columns about her. You people are obsessed with her.

      • dusen

We can’t help it John. It’s like a car crash on the side of the road – you don’t want to slow down and look, but against your better judgement, you do.

Personally, I can’t “hate” somebody I don’t really know, but I am flabbergasted she’s still on our pop culture radar.

      • Nielsen Sucks

Where in my comment did I say that I hated her? I’m just simply saying that our nielsen ratings are flawed. That system cannot possibly represent all the Americans watching and I sure as hell don’t want them representing me. Those nielsen box owners have the power to keep and cancel a show on tv and NOT the average viewers like you and me

    • Heather

I find myself wondering the same thing!! I was unaware this was a special and since I hadn’t seen any more previews on TLC, I thought that it had bombed and been canceled. I’m very sad to see that it will be back on July 11. Hopefully that episode will be the last.

    • Darlene

I just don’t understand the negative comments. If you don’t like her or the show, DON’T WATCH!! Deep down inside, you must love the program. I think she and the kids are great. I love watching her. Wish the programed aired everyday.

  • wk

Oh Good!! This ISN’T a weekly exploitation of the children. I thought she was back on a weekly basis. Thank God she isn’t.

  • sandy

Who are you and why do u care!

    • Sam

      Why do YOU care?

  • Meh

Just goes to show that there truly is no accounting for taste. A network could put on a half-hour show that only shows a steaming pile of crap, call it ‘reality tv’ and people would still watch it.

  • EWsMom

If Jersey Shore can pull in 3-4 million viewers a week, then why not Kate?!

    • jersey shore are only making fools of themselves; kate’s exploiting her children so she can be famous. there’s a difference.

      • EWsMom

        Not really.
At least Kate can claim that she’s doing the show to provide a comfortable life for her family.
What’s Jersey Shore’s excuse for acting like fools?

      • Nobody

Really? Khate is doing the show for the children’s benefit and not her own?
Ok, then please explain to me how the kids benefit from Khates boob enhancement and hair extensions?

      • Tess

Of course she did some things for herself, she has 8 kids. I don’t think a little “me” time for Kate makes her a bad mother or means that her kids are being exploited.

  • Joni

3.4 million is big? What were the ratings for the Celtics v Lakers game? I suspect that they were a great deal higher than that. I know that’s what I was watching.
    (GO CELTICS!)

    • sue

I am with you. I watched the game! GO CELTICS!!!!!!!

    • racefan111

3.4 mil is huge – especially for cable. Idol was drawing 17 mil. Lost averaged 11 mil. She is getting ratings at no production cost. She will be on FOREVER….

    • a real mom

3.4 million watched Kate last night.. That’s not exactly true…since you must have 2 brain cells to have a functioning synapse it actually makes the number 1.7 million.

  • Tanny

Oh gawd make this horrible woman go away. Who in their right mind would watch this crap?

  • Adam

For the love of Pete, why can’t Kate just GO AWAY ALREADY?! I had really hoped that the whole Jon & Kate drama had played itself out, and that these two selfish, immature fools had used up their 15 minutes of fame and would drift into obscurity. But then “Dancing With the Stars” HAD to sign up Kate, and as a result we’re still hearing about her in 2010. I guess every has-been, D-list “celebrity” will keep turning up, like a bad penny, thanks to the internet and all its gossip sites, as well as all plague of trashy “reality” shows on network and cable TV that depend solely on name recognition, however lame or unworthy those “names” may be. Are there no worthier people in this country to spotlight? Absolutely pathetic!

  • Mikey M

Who on earth watches this crap? Anyone who does should be committed.
    Pure Junk.

  • Moira

Really good numbers. Hope to see the show go on as long as Kate and the kids want it to. If you are not interested, there are tons of other programs to keep you happy. I have no interest in CSI-Iowa City, but if some like it, it doesn’t harm me.

  • UGH

EVERYONE PLEASE STOP WATCHING THIS SHOW SO IT GOES AWAY. I didn’t watch it, but the fact that it’s on television irks me.

  • Sam

Loved the shows! I have a greater understanding of why Kate is the way she is and that she is not the horrible person some insist she is. She is just a working mom, trying to provide for EIGHT kids. People who hate on her are just mean spirited and bored with their own lives!

    • kim

I agree with you. Why do so many people hate her? If people dont like her why do they watch her or make comments? I agree that she is just trying to provide for her family and I do like her.

    • danielle

i agree, anyone who doesnt like kate are just jealous and doesnt understand what its like to raise 8 kids on her own. its funny how everyone hates kate while she works & provides for her 8 kids but what about jon? hes a lowlife who doesnt know the first thing about parenting and hes broke! id say kate is the lesser evil, shes a great mom

      • Nobody

You’re dilusional at best, Danielle. How much money do you think it takes to raise 8 kids? My mom raised 4 on her own and barely made what is equal to todays minimum wage. She managed. Khate, on the other hand, probably makes 75k per episode, made over 250k for the DWTS gig, and still gets 25k a month in child suppport (the average single mom probably isn’t making 25k a year, much less each month). And lets not forget how much cash she rakes in through the book deals and signings.

To say the woman is struggling to make ends meet and does everything she does to raise the kids is a lie to the highest degree. You give me one benfit those children will get out of Khates boob job and I’ll leave her alone. The woman is a liar and could care less about the benfit of the children. She only cares for them because they are what provided her with all of her vanity.

      • Marisa

Just saw his flavor of the month, though, each one looks like the other. He likes them in their twenties. She’s twenty-three and the rumor has it, only with the kids to become famous. I don’t get the attraction. I guess it is money because he hit the wall, and he’s younger than Kate.

      • Dawn

I would have to say that “Nobody” is delusional. I find it hard to believe the “Jon” pays her 25k in child support. If anything, Kate has to pay Jon support. Shame on anyone that critizes a mom who is paying for a house, clothes for her kids and puts food on the table to feed 8 kids. If Kate went back to being a nurse, her salary as a nurse would not cut it!!! Obviously, you dont have kids of your own. Raising 8 kids in 2010 is expensive…I have 3 of my own and it costs alot of money to give them a decent life and I still have to say “NO” to things. Life is hard and if TLC is going to help provide a paycheck to care for them, who are any of us to judge???

      • Heather

Since when is having to say “No” to your kids a bad thing? It teaches them that in life we don’t always get what we want. A kid who is spoiled and gets everything he or she wants is ill-prepared for the reality of living in this world. A nurse getting child support from her ex-husband should be able to provide for 8 kids, especially taking into consideration the money she ALREADY earned from her show, Dancing with the Stars, her books, etc.

    • Jen

My mother also had eight kids and a no-good husband and she went to a job each day. She didn’t use us to make a buck. And you can’t say it’s harder on her because they are multiples. Mom had 8 kids in 9 years so we might as well have been multiples. She had kids in diapers for years. I can say I have lived her life and she’s a media-w hore. She could get a job and simply raise her kids, but she’s convinced herself she is important. And she is the reason Jon can’t get a job. She decided she wanted more kids after the twins and talked him into it. He was fired from several jobs simply because the paps followed him. She is the cause of so many problems because of how self-centered she is. Anybody who feels sorry for her or sees her as a loving mother and wife, is delusional. Stop Watching This Show!

      • Gamma Ga

        Here Here!!

      • Marisa

I just have to ask all of you who are saying that your mom’s did it without television. I am in NO WAY giving my opinion, but, would these women have liked the opportunity to do it on television? Before you say no, because of the mess and honding the children and moms would be subjected to, the Gosslins didn’t know it would be this big. Yes, she continues, and I won’t discuss if it is right or not because, I am not her. What I do know is that I am struggling and I only have a cat. Life doesn’t fit in a nice box with a ribbon. How awful if it did.

      • Tess

Good for your mom but I bet if she could’ve had something going to help out financially she would’ve welcomed it. Kate lucked out, no one can judge her for this unless you yourself are a mother of 8 kids….if you aren’t, stop judging.

  • Linda

Why can’t you people leave her alone. If you don’t like her so be it. Then don’t watch. The ratings are high some do care about this family. Why don’t you all try raising eight kids without the help of a spouse. Those kids like being on the show and love the crew. It would be rough raising that many kids on a nurse’s salary, at least she isn’t on welfare. She may have been mouthy to Jon at times but someone had to take control or everything would have fallen apart and he sure didn’t seem to help much. All he has cared about is how may young girls he can get into his bed. That is a positive influence for the kids. This is her way of taking care of her kids. So she has some perks. How many of you can say you wouldn’t like some of those perks? If you said no I feel you are lying. So she has nanny’s Many everyday people have them. How would you like people saying nasty things about your parenting? You don’t know this women only what the tabloids say. Walk a mile in her shoes then maybe you would not be so critical, All I can say is don’t like her don’t watch and shut your mouths!!

    • EWsMom

Please stop using common sense and some decency in your posts regarding Kate. It’s clear that the vast majority here (including that old fart Ken Tucker) have had the knives out for Kate since day one. Yet, they’re more than happy to kiss the bum of talentless hacks on American Idol who desperately seek their 15 minutes of fame.

      • manny

LOL…The fact that you’re compare a singing contrest with adult contestants to a woman who is exhibits her minor children in front of cameras for the “amusement” of the public pretty much shows that yours, like kates, reasoning process is completely skewed. It’s one thing to choose something for yourself, it’s another thing to force it on children in order to gain fame and a paycheck for yourself.

      • @manny

Hey moron, she isn’t taking the paycheque and spending it on herself…she’s feeding, clothing and providing an awesome life for EIGHT children.

      • Anderson

She is? Gee, who paid for her boob job, acrylic nails, hair extensions, and who know what other narcissic indulgence? You’re the moron if you actually beleive her motivation is to provide basic food and clothes for children who now believe living with a camera crew is normal.

      • Tess

Okay, so Kate isn’t allowed to do for herself what MANY other mothers do for themselves because of…what? Many working mom’s have fake nails, fake hair and fake boobs, so stop making Kate out to be a bad mother for doing some things for herself!

    • danielle

wow i couldnt have said it better, i agree!!!!

    • Mo

I agree with those who say; don’t like her, then don’t watch. If she worked a RN job everyday she would never have time to be with the kids; this way she has days that she is working and then she is at home with her children. I bet all you haters couldn’t handle raising 8 kids alone while working 5 to 6 days a week, who would be caring for them. I am from a family of 8 children; my mom worked her fingers to the bone and I hate that she had it so hard, as for Jon, how is he paying 25k when he doesn’t have a job, just looking for a Suga Momma?

      • Marisa

I bet he found a way to get cash at this latest show, you bet.

  • lucy

There must be a lot of single mothers who are half brain intelligence deprived to watch this horrid witch-Amazing. AND those woman who watch obviously cannot read, because no one bought her last book!! So all the viewers do not speak well for her…

  • JC

Some of you serial haters seriously need to step away from your computers. Are your fingers worn out from making up multiple usernames to bash Kate with all day long?
