Breaking: Starz acquires 'Torchwood'

torchwoodImage Credit: Adrian RogersCaptain Jack is back — and Starz has him!

The cable net has acquired U.S. television rights to the next installment of Torchwood. The 10-episode cycle is slated to air in summer 2011 on both Starz (in the U.S.) and BBC One (in the UK).

Several new characters are expected to come on board, joining franchise vets John Barrowman and Eve Myles. Russell T. Davies, meanwhile, will be back as showrunner.

The new episodes will take on more of an “international scope,” says Starz, adding, “The new series will allow Davies and his writing team to tell a more explosive and global story, one that takes advantage of the unlimited narrative opportunities of a premium television service like Starz.”

The news comes several weeks after Fox passed on a U.S. version of Torchwood.

Wow, is this for real? I thought Torchwood was finished.

    • darclyte

      BAH!

Why oh why does it HAVE to be on STARZ?

SyFy and BBC America I get already.

I don’t want to have to pay extra to get this (well, if in that case also Spartacus.)

      But still…BAH!

      • rachel

yeah…i don’t think they’d ever show torchwood on syfy without severely hacking it to pieces and basically ruining the show. that’s the charm of BBC America…very little censoring. on Starz (and netflix) there would be no censoring :)

      • Tom

Thats right Rachel! Netflix! SOOOOOOOOO AWESOME! Maybe Jack will bring Alonzo with him back from space!

      • Jörg

So wait for the DVD release…

But i sincerely hope, that Ianto’s comming back. ;)

      • Jam

New episodes of Spartacus were available on Netflix instant watch the day after the episode played on Starz. I hope they do the same for Torchwood. This show could really explode with the international vibe. Unfortuantely, I think Ianto is gone but glad to see Eve Myles and John coming back

    • Ne Oublie

Great news! I am curious to see where they will go/continue with it.

    • dave

If you have netflix, you can watch anything on starz as if you subscribe to it, cause they are partners I guess, every show that comes on Starz is available on Watch Instantly the same day as its first airing.

  • Louisa

yay! About time. I’ll take anything if it means Jack is back!

  • GimplyGump ☺

[grrrr] and I don’t have the money for STARZ. OK, I need to win the Chuckin’ lotto I hope the Intersect can help.

    • Barry

Join NetFlix. You can watch STARZ original programs there. That’s how I watched Spartacus this past season.

      • Brooke

Do they add each episode as it airs, or do you have to wait until the season has completely finished?

      • GimplyGump ☺

Ah I am on Netflix. Unfortunately they don’t do captions.

      • Machunny

How was Spartacus? Really want to try it, but don’t want to become invested if it’s not worth it.

      • Eric

They add them weekly. It’s how I’m watching Party Down and Gravity. Hope they keep it up for Torchwood.

      • TMRZoo Neil

@Machunny; Spartacus was awesome, if you like your sex and violence in massive quantities. It has heaps of both. I tell people it’s like 300 meets Caligula on anobolic steroids. Aside from that, the plot line and character relationships are great. I can’t wait for the next season to start.

      • Dave

I second the SPARTACUS love! Worth getting Netflix just for this.

      • Kristen

THANK YOU! We do not have the money for Starz. We gave up premium channels and Blockbuster and only do NetFlix. I may look up Spartacus tonight!

      • Maggie

Thanks for the NetFlix info. I’m glad I’ll be able to see Torchwood without having Starz.

      • tag

My husband got me Starz for Valentine’s day because he knew I wanted to see Spartacus. It started out good and got better each episode. I was actually anxious before watching the finale because I KNEW something harsh was going to happen – I just didn’t know exactly what. Can’t wait for season 2.

      • Jam

BROOKE – the new episodes were available the day after it aired on Starz. Same thing with the animated Archer series.
Spartacus is an excellent series, just phenominal (sp) and the netflix instant watch is great thru Wii, PS3 or xbox 360. I do one dvd at a tiem for $8.99 and get unlimited instant watch thru my Wii.

      • GimplyGump ☺

N.Flix now has captions on a VERY limited selection (about 100) of things and most TV shows, like Lost. However Spartacus is not among it so I don’t hold mout hope for Torchwood.

      • Patrick Allen

Speaking of Netflix, you can see just about every episode of every season of 24 there, as well as the first three seasons of Torchwood, seasons of Lost, many others. Some may not know that you can search for many, many more movies by going to Netflix, then go down one and use the Search to find movies. It’s surprising what you can find there.

  • Deion

I knew Torchwood couldn’t end on that incredibly sad note. I need Jack and Gwen to regularly save the world.

  • Everett

    Kick some arse, Captain Jack!

  • Trevor

I thought BBCA had US rights. Did they show a reason to go a different direction?

    • bamabunny

I think BBC America has RERUN rights, meaning they air it months after it has aired in the UK. The Starz agreement (unless I’m mistaken) means it will air at the same time as the UK, meaning no UK spoilers for US audience!

      • Kate

With COE BBC America aired it within a month. It wasn’t within a week like Doctor Who. I’m not sure what the agreement was, but I would perfer it on BBC America.

  • Rodney

I’m so excited. Fox would have been a horrible network for it! Starz will have no taboos!

    • Eric

I thought the Foxd version was going to be a remake, so Jack might have even been straight. This seems like a continuation, so I’m excited for that.

  • the Duckster

WHOO! I am a recent Torchwood convert via Netflix, and I cannot WAIT for new episodes!!

    • Bobby’s Robot

I watched it on BBCA but don’t have STARZ, so I’ll have to start Netflix-ing it now.

  • chaslibrarygirl

I am so excited thjat Torchwood will not be on American network TV b/c they would destroy it. Very excited for new series.

  • Michelle

    YES!!!!!!!!! More Captain Jack!

  • lisa

Unless they manage to get RTD’s head out of **** and resurrect Ianto early in the season – I won’t be watching. There’s creating tension and then there’s breaking trust with your viewers.

    • Deion

Really? I don’t think the combined losses of Owen and Tosh evoked that much emotion from me. To ressurect him would feel like a waste of a perfectly tragic death. That said, 3 of 5 in 2 seasons does just seem like death for death’s sake, so I can come with you on some of that.

    • Erin

WTF are you talking about?! You won’t watch because of Ianto’s death? They broke your trust?? I have no words besides “Bish, plz”

Just like Deion said, that would be a waste of a tragic death. I feel the complete opposite of you – I’d feel cheated if they resurrected him. If you seriously feel that way, you should have stopped watching when Owen and Tosh died.

      • lisa

The promise of CoE was that we’d get to see Jack and Ianto’s relationship – which we didn’t – and now never will. I was more at peace with Owen’s death – because he did get life after death than Tosh’s which also seemed a throw away that didn’t help explore any particular themes. Same with Ianto’s death – so many more interesting storylines if he was alive…

    • Brooke

I always feel bad for the actors that play Tosh and Owen that no one seemed to care when they were axed, but Ianto, who was a rather secondary character compared to Tosh and Owen, gets so much internet angst.

      • Brian

Probably because of the ‘love’ between Capt Jack and Ianto, and watching Jack’s heart break as Ianto was lost.

    • Jenn

I think resurrecting Ianto would be a bit cheap. But I agree with you that all the deaths are too much. It’s clear to me that the only characters RTD really cares about are Jack and Gwen, so I’m not going to bother to watch further and get myself invested.

I never fully warmed to Gwen as she’s written too un-evenly. I also never warmed to Jack as written in Torchwood (I do adore him whenever he pops up in Doctor Who.). I also have my own issues with RTD as a writer (completely outside of CoE… I dislike most of his Doctor Who episodes as well). So this is a bunch of Do Not Want to me.

      • Eric

I really dislike Gwen. Hopefully we’ll get some new characters, so it’s not all about her. I miss Tosh and Owen (who always seemed to have more personality than Ianto and Gwen).

      • Cris

That’s interesting. I was always the opposite with Captain Jack. I always disliked his spots on Doctor Who, but really warmed up to him as Torchwood moved along.

      • PJ

What is left to tell for Gwen’s story – are we going to have “wacky” episodes of her pregnancy symptoms, or trying to take care of the baby on dangerous missions (cue the “Benny Hill” theme muzak while they run around) or we have scenes of her talking on the phone to Rhys explaining she will be a bit late trying to kill an alien?
I was really hoping with a reboot with just Jack. No offense against the actress who plays Gwen, but her story is done. Maybe a guest appearance on one episode?

      • Jenn

        @Cris

I think it’s just that Jack’s Torchwood arc is too overwhelmingly dismal for me.

He’s going to see everyone he ever cares about die, he’ll never be able to truly be happy, there’s no cure for his immortality, and he’s eventually going to turn into the Face of Boe (which I don’t really think makes sense, but RTD threw it in there, so…).

It’s almost like what’s the point of rooting for him because it’s always going to be tragic and dreary in the end.

  • Brittany

If this is a cruel cruel joke I will be so sad. I thought TW would be done for good, but I’m glad that STARZ is giving it a chance. BRB watching all my TW dvds!

  • Shadow Step

    Wow, I wonder if he’s been de-gayed *g*

  • Ipstenu

What the heck? Can’t they put it on BBCA? What’s the point in having a bloody BBC station in the US freakin A if all they show is US shows? Like Star Trek? Shame on you, Beeb! Air your own flippin shows the day after they air in the UK and we’ll be happier!

    • bbcgrrrl

To Ipstenu: Although BBCA is owned by BBC Worldwide, you can barely tell! Honestly, how is “Star Trek: TNG” BRITISH??? BBCA has blown every programming opportunity they’ve had. It started with canceling eastenders and continued with losing out on Spooks to the A&E butcher shop, and has continued with several other top shows. I gave up on BBCA *YEARS* ago. It’s just a channel for endless repeats of DIY shows. UGH!

FOX? Worst network EVER! Can’t keep a good show for more than a series or two and yet keeps others that have well passed their sell by date (yeah! I’m talkin’ to you 24!).

But hurrah for STARZ! Well done! Can’t wait for the new Torchwood series with RT at the helm! And with a bigger budget? Should be brilliant! DEFFO!

    • Vicki

I couldn’t agree more. I feel like BBC is so chintzy with what they’ll let run on BBCA (or BBCA is too cheap to get the good stuff – not sure who make the decisions). I REALLY don’t want to pay for Starz, but it looks like I might have to. Sigh.

    • PJ

No According to Wiki “BBC America is distributed in association with Discovery Networks”. Now you know why only certain shows are on this channel – its like TNT, or TBS with a bit of “British” theme. I’m sure soon they will have wrestling or something non-Brit to homogenize this channel like the rest of the cable networks.

Actually TW was much better when on HDNet – no commercials/edits and great full HD. BBCA can go jump in the lake to put it nicely.

      • Maggie

BBCA is distributed to American cable and satellite companies using Discovery as a distribution system. (Like an independant film company getting a major studio to distribute its film)

BBCA is a BBC network, although with its own management and budget. It’s like NBC and USA networks, which are both owned by Universal, but have separate management and budgets.

  • BHM1304

This channel is currently airing one of the best Dramas in “Sparatacus: Blood and Sand” and best Comedies in “Party Down” on television. STARZ does good work, this sounds like a brilliant marriage. This makes a HELL of a lot more sense then “Torchwood” on FOX.

    • Jonathan

I totally agree with you. STARZ will provide a bigger budget and if you can go by SPARTACUS, there won’t be any retooling of the Jack’s sexuality or the openness of sexuality on the show. FOX would have significantly limited the show and its characters and damaged something we have all grown to love. Can’t wait to see what they do.
